Well… no one wants to play serious defense because no one wants to get hurt.
I appreciate not wanting to get hurt and nobody expects lock down defense but there's still some room to have semblance of defense, not the joke we're currently watching.

Prior to tonight I haven’t watched an NBA all star game in years. It’s been fun to watch with my 15 year old and 10 year old. We really only watch Celtics games so this has been a good chance for them to see and learn about players from other teams.

It’s a KAT show.

Someone on Boston probably will guard him.
Feels like Dame has been going through a crisis of confidence for the last couple months, and if winning the 3 point contest and all-star game MVP reminds him that he's probably the 2nd 2nd deadliest shooter in the league, that's kind of a bummer.

Orrrrr.....slinging so many 3s in the all star game could break his shot in real games for a bit, a la Tatum last year.

Agreed. Such an enigma that Bucks team is. If Doc figures this out they are still the biggest threat. They do need Middleton to be legit but a confident Dame is going to be a huge pain

The NHL All-Star Gane has sucked since forever. The Pro Bowl was such a joke they got rid of the game. MLB and NBA were the two All-Star Games that were entertaining back in the day; neither is as good as it once was.
The nice thing about MLB is that the difference between 'trying all-out' and 'not really pushing that hard' isn't nearly as large (and basically means 'don't dive for balls in the outfield or take extra risks running bases')... I'm sure the pitchers aren't pushing throwing as much breaking stuff, but otherwise outside of not pitching there's not much they can really do to put in less effort

I agree though, you might as well do a bunch of for-charity short games or something because while it's fun to see the stars from different teams playing with each other, a full game of this is too much

My internal reactions from clicking thread this morning.

Pre-thread: Whoa 6 page thread this must be compelling let’s check it out.

During thread: Wait. People actually watched this shit show Sat night and Sun night after seeing previous years versions?

Post-thread: I’m sick, well aware of this….but this Port Cellar crew is so hardcore I just broke my back!

168 uncontested three pointers attempted in the game, 97 by the East. The only thing remotely interesting about that was Dame's half court shots, which looked like normal jumpers compared to the heaves most guys throw up from that distance.

In the past the games at least had guys making much more effort to try and pull playground moves out of their bag, which led to some creative stuff. Now apparently that is too much of an injury risk.

Has anyone ever been seriously hurt in an NBA All-Star game?

The only worthwhile watch, over NBA self-congratulatory weekend, was Sabrina Vs Steff. BUT somehow they even screwed that up.

This has reached Grammy's level bad TV.

The big winner was KP who should have made it but instead went to St. Barths

The CEBL does that and I hate it. I have been to multiple games where the exciting ending is a free throw
But how many have you been to where the exciting ending is a series of intentional fouls, free throws, and timeouts that cumulatively take half an hour to play the last 45 seconds? At least you get to see some basketball being played.

The format for the Rising Stars game is the format they should use for the actual All Star Game. If you didn't watch it--they have four different teams of players, and do a mini-tournament where the winners of the first two games play in the finals (there is a consolation game as well, so four games in total). They play to a score, so its more like pick-up basketball, but because they play to a score, and the games are quicker, there tends to be more moments of competitive play. As a wrinkle, one of the teams is a G-League team, who play a lot harder and drive the competition more. Look at Wemby when his team lost--he was pissed!

You obviously wouldn't have a G-League team in the ASG, but these guys would be playing more competitive from the jump with the smaller games and playing to a score.

where I was last at
I haven't watched an entire an NBA All=Star game probably since the 80s (except for maybe the Magic game).

Last night I watched the pre-game line-up intros, the first two game minutes, switched to True Detective, and then saw the last few minutes of the game.

I laughed when I saw the score with a few minutes to go, and was rooting for a 400 pt game, and was hoping Jokic was gonna drain a 3 at the buzzer.

All in all a disappointing night of TV.

You could have the rising stars team tourney winner play as the fourth team.

Expand the rosters to 15 per conference. Top 10 vote getters pick their 2 teammates in. A snake draft could work? 2 conferences. Round robin to get top team in reach competence in the finals. Winning captain picks the charity.

This is fine but is not going to change a thing about the actual game play

I'm not even sure them taking it more seriously is much of an objective - it's an exhibition to hype up the sport and the stars. It works fine for that - people who are in this thread a lot watch teh other games, the all star game is more for the folks who DON'T otherwise watch NBA, imo

I would imagine the data shows that it’s largely preexisting avid NBA fans who watch the ASG. Especially when it’s on TNT and not a broadcast network.

If the players are going to treat the ASG as an afternoon shoot around, which is understandable, then they should not play a game. Just do expanded skills competitions.

They should do a HORSE tourney.
That’s what I was thinking too

Also maybe give an offensive mvp and a defensive mvp to get more defense?

Also perhaps allow for opt-outs if players are too important to their real team
That’s what I like about past pro bowls, if you’re in the SB (or even came off CCG) you don’t play and someone from worse teams get invited in.

Maybe do it a week after NBA Finals?
or the days between conference finals and NBA Finals and don’t have finalists play?

Yes but in the background. No one who follows the league day in day out cares or is all hot takey about "fixing it" or how it was "embarrassing". The people complaining are the ones who dont watch and tune in yesterday and see a shootaround.

Eh, I just had it on in the background while doing other stuff. It is a nice passive sports event to wind down from the uber-serious Super Bowl the previous weekend. I still think pickup basketball to this style is closer to the traditional sport than pickup football is to their standard gameplay. I don't get the pearl-clutching over high scoring and zero defense, are there ANY professional athletes that risk life and limb over the respective all star games for their sports? Unless you are a modern day Pete Rose or Pedro Martinez I suppose.

You could have the rising stars team tourney winner play as the fourth team.
I'm picturing 4 teams playing at the SAME TIME, looking like the Anchorman battle royale. Put down additional baskets at opposing sidelines like a high school practice session.

where I was last at
Have a 2-on-2 White Men Can't jump team competition

One 3-man team (2 play, 1 sub/coach) from each NBA team, half court game, 11 basket game, (win by 2) no refs, no more than 2 hoops from inside the restricted arc, (to limit dunks/impact of big men) one and done. $5MM (whatever) to each winning team and same amount to charity

There would be D and intensity

I'd watch

It was worth trying but it doesn't work. The worst scenario in elam ending is when a comeback happens a team down 10 gets ahead but now had to keep playing to score 7 more points. So the team that blew the lead gets a mini game to recover.

What did you think of the Steph v. Ionescu shootout? Is it something you’d like to see again in future years? I quite enjoyed it myself.

In a regular quarter if a team that was down 10 gets ahead they have to keep playing too

Sure but if up 2 you just have to hold the lead

Sabrina and Steph was great.
At the BC small schools provincials they had the boys winner play girls winner in 3pt contest and it was electric.

The game is already ridiculous, I'd love to see them take it a step further:

Make the game 8 on 8, requiring them to leave 3 guys in the backcourt at all times.

Penalize the team 1 point for every missed 3 point attempt.

Allow in-game substitutions like the NHL.

I'd be pretty happy to do away with the all-star game entirely (players still get named to the all-star team, but it's just an honorary thing, like making all-NBA). Shift the timing of the ITP to make the finals coincide with the Sunday afternoon time slot, a perfect way to finish all-star weekend - two reasonably competitive teams (at least), playing real basketball for a legit prize.

The all star game carried a lot more weight when you couldn’t see other teams stars unless they were playing your home team or being featured in a national game. Moreover the streaming era has made highlights ubiquitous, you don’t even have to bear through a series of commercials to catch Sportscenter. I don’t think really anything brings that era back.

500k means nothing to 95% of all stars, that doesn't fix anything

Over half the Lakers roster doesn't make that much money (relatively speaking) and never will, how many all stars aren't either already on or about to receive max or near max deals?

There's also the difference in that one is your actual team that you play with all the time and the other is a group of your buddies playing a single game
