On the Yankees:

"They look the Red Sox in the eyes and melt"

And now the callers!

Caller ranting about firing this "computer-chip manager". Mike getting on board that Girardi is over-matched. You have to do something about it when the team plays like this. As easy going as Torre is, they would have gotten something from him.

This kid yesterday had nothing to get you out with, with a 6.0 ERA, and the Yankees didn't even get a walk. Got beat by a team people are calling maybe the worst team in the last 30 years. They think they can just start playing in the 7th inning or something.

Epstein has built a team that fits, and plays as a team. The Yankees are a collection of talent.

The odd thing is they're only 3 games back. I haven't seen such out-of-whack ranting since last night's game thread

They're very lucky to only be 3 games back.

Castillo catches and pop up and the Sox play a full game last night and they could very easily be 5 back today.

I do think the Yankees are being undersold. The Sox are fully capable of losing to the Padres or whoever.

I don't think the Yankees are really structurally flawed, any more than the Red Sox or Tampa Bay, and have as much chance at a playoff spot as those teams. I mean, the Red Sox don't have a functioning left side of the infield, and a $100 million dollar pitcher who blows. Everyone has problems.

That's my point. Considering where they could have been, they're in good shape.

Sometimes I wonder whether Russo has friends call and ask questions or make statements designed to make Mike explode

Francessa is just retarded.

He acts like Joba's ERA is 9.50. For the record it is 3.89. And the Yankees got shut out last night, how exactly was he supposed to win the game last night?

Why doesn't he get this mad about Wang?

His answer, whether or not you accept it, is that the ERA would be much higher if the Ys didn't baby him. They never leave him "out there" the way they would a veteran, but bring him in as soon as he hits 100 pitches, which is often far too soon.

As for his getting more agitated about Joba than Wang, it is an elaborate form of "I told you so." All along, he has preached keeping Joba as the set-up to Rivera. Now that he is struggling as a starter, Fat Frank feels vindicated. To give him the benefit of the doubt, I think he really cares about all this, and truly believes that having J. set up Mo would save many games.

(Or, Wingack, what you just said, except Francessa is a Yankees fan and Limbaugh hates Obama's guts.)

In fairness to Mike (not that he would realize this), but his FIP is 4.52 and his strand rate is 76.6%.

So he is lucky that his ERA isn't closer to 4.50, which would be very pedestrian.

Matsuzaka makes about half of that.

I do think Mike's playing things up a bit with no Russo, but I also think he's legitimately angry and I can see why. The org dumped Torre and brought in the new guy who may or may not be in over his head, no playoffs last year, huge offseason, they are winless against their major rivals for the season, and they just dropped a series to the worst team in baseball at home, looking like they mailed a couple of games in. The Yanks right now deserve to be ripped, they deserve to feel some heat.

As for Joba, I used to think he was crazy wanting Joba in the pen, and I still think he should stay a starter, but I think he's less crazy now than I did before. I thought Joba would be better than this, although there's still plenty of time for that to happen. I'm glad he killed Joba's immaturity though, and how he acted with Posada the other day.

Here comes the whiner line. Waah, the Sox are done with their west coast trips. Waah, the Sox don't have to play nine straight road interleague games. Waah, waah, waah.

Lol boo hoo

"Mike Scisocia is the best manager in baseball" :barf:

The fawning is a little too much at times, but in all honesty he has had to deal with an incredible amount of injuries just to his pitching staff, not to mention the Adenhart tragedy. And yet they have roughly the same record as the Yankees.

I do hope that someone will post some tidbits from his Girardi interview, as I must, must, must go back to the garden before it starts raining again.
Thanks in advance.

Girardi: we weren't swinging the bats well

re: Joba: he's got a 4 ERA, in top 50 in AL

Francessa: he was electric two years ago

Girardi: in one inning

Francessa: so why not do that again? he's regressing

Girardi: he's not going to be the same as a SP as he was as a RP, we're not happy with the BB for the entire staff, every pitcher in MLB has bad starts

Francessa: he's not special now, he's ok to decent

Girardi: you can't expect him to dominate from day 1, we believe in him

Francessa: did they mail in the Nats series?

Girardi: no, but it looks like it because our bats were bad

It's not really fair for Mike to belabor the Joba issue with Girardi, we know it's Cashman's decision. Girardi can't do anything but defend it.

Girardi's answer to why the team is in a funk lately: "We just haven't swung the bats well."

On Joba's problems this year: "The kid's 23 years old. We think he'll be an upper echelon starter as time moves on."

On sluggish play against Natstown: "We're just not swinging the bats well."

On pitchers & Posada: "No pitcher has told me that he won't throw to Posada."

On bad relationship w/veteran players: "Nothing that I'm aware of. I think we get along great."

Girardi: nobody has said they don't want to pitch to "georgie" (Posada)

Francessa: do you get along with the veterans?

Girardi: ?? ask them, people are making things up... The team gets along great

On facing new pitchers: I saw some stat that says those pitchers are 3-17 when facing the Yankees (before my time here as manager)
