That's the guy who recovered the onside kick for the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. Special teamer, LB depth?
Rare missed trick for BB, should have said he was watching Manning games on tape this morning.

Who does he bump off the game day roster?  Slater, Don Jones and Bolden seem to be the three special teams only guys every week.  Slater and Jones arnt sitting for this guy.  Bolden is the break glass in case of emergency bigger running back now.  So I guess the answer has to be Deontae Skinner, right?  Which if they are comfortable sitting Skinner, then they must been impressed with Ayers because Casillas is a Linebacker in name only.

I was hoping they'd focus on LB depth at the deadline, so that part is good.  But with Brady's clock ticking, shouldn't we have gone after a better quality guy, even if it cost a high draft choice?

Probably IR Ebner.

I doubt any were available for anything under an absurd ransom.

Someone like Talib with talent but warts and injury concerns is about the best you can hope for at the trading deadline and there might just not have been a guy out there this year.  Its hard to do big trades for high draft choices in the NFL unless your owner is under the influence and spewing first round picks for replacement level RBs.

To clear a roster spot for Jonathan Casillas, the Patriots have waived OL Chris Barker, per league source.

The Pats play a lot of players on special teams, not just three. In fact, you didn't name the top two players in special teams snaps, Tavon Wilson and Chris White. As for game-day inactives, it depends. Casillas' ability to play specials means they could deactivate one of the safeties or a LB, but they could also deactivate a guy like Tyms, Butler, or White.

Ebner returned to practice last week; I don't think they'll IR him.

So they basically moved down about 6 spots in the draft to get Casillas.
The last three inseason trades - Casillas, Ayers, and Sopoaga - have all been of this formula, trading a pick for a player but getting back a pick within a round or so. In the past Belichick has suggested that it's easy to move back in the draft and pick up late-round picks, but in 2012 he had trouble doing that - they ended up trading a second for a third, a sixth, and two sevenths, which is pretty poor value per the value chart. It seems like now they'd rather swap fifths or sixths than give up a sixth or seventh, and they've avoided stuff like the Haynesworth or Salas deals more recently.

That strategy works well too, because you're probably targeting players you covet that are probably not on other teams radars....wait who?
