Wow, so who's left with game experience at CB (discounting McCourty who will presumably stay at safety)?  Butler, Ryan...They must LOVE the tape on Darryl Roberts.

Man I nailed that Kyle Arrington as the number one corner by snaps prediction last week.

Yeah, I figured he'd be a major player next season.  Ooops.

Hopefully the 75% of the board who hates him aren't going to flip out about losing him.

Price and Rapaport, along with Reiss, suggest this is a salary reduction measure and that he probably will be back. Much ado about nothing until he signs elsewhere.

Yes, I realize this.  Just don't get why releasing him and freeing up less than $800k.  According to Miguel's salary page on him, they save $3.5 million on the cap next year however.  If they get him back, that's great.  But, it's a big risk exposing him to the market.

I cant figure out what the benefit of cutting him and then signing him again would be unless they just want to let him test the open market.

Could be as simple as $3.2MM is too high next year for a base salary, this team showed with Mankins they wont let not having an easy alternative push them into paying a base salary they think is too high.

Well if nothing else…..youn have to give BB and the front office credit that they are detail oriented…..heh

Cutting Arrington will save them $790K.   This on a $143.28 Million dollar cap.  OR….less then HALF a percent.

AND THATS BEFORE he is resigned (if thats the intention).

Can this save Money in 2016-2017 for a bigger hit this year?

Or what Stitch and RedOct said...

Its the $3.2MM base that's the issue, the rest of the money is going to hit the salary cap at some point.  So its more accurate to say its about 2.5% of the salary cap that they are concerned with, but still sort of a head scratcher given what else happened with the roster.

I assume they knew before the draft this was a possibility, but Id think this would have been something they could have figured out earlier in the offseason.

McClain and Fletcher as well.

They signed Bradley Fletcher and Robert McClain, who have a lot of experience.

They save his $3 MM in 2015 salary by cutting him now (dead money is dead money; it has to be paid whether he's kept or cut). Maybe they think they can sign him for less than that.

The Pats save his $3M salary both against the cap and in real dollars.

The rest is dead money and will hit the cap at some point or another. It's just accounting whether all if it is this year or if it is split over two years.

People may not love Arrington but the Patriots DO need corners, and Arrington did a great job on Hilton in the AFCCG.

Like everyone else, I have no idea what BB is thinking.

It is wishful thinking but is there any chance Schefter is not talking about deflategate? Maybe a trade for a CB?

Then there's this. Patriots making Monday headlines. And the biggest one is yet to come here in next 24 or so hours.

Reiss on ESPN says the attention turns to McCourty, and initial thoughts are he may be heading to CB.

Take an all-pro safety and move him back to corner?  I love DMC, but this probably weakens the Pats in two spots.

So current CB depth:

1. Ryan
2. Fletcher
3. Butler
4. McClain
5. Roberts

Call that a somewhat significant drop off from:

1. Revis
2. Browner
3. Arrington
4. Ryan
5. Butler
6. Dennard

I could see this (mostly in light of drafting Richards to go with Harmon and Chung), but I don't think Arrington's release moves the needle much on DMC to CB. McCourty was outside-only when he was last at CB. He's spent a little time in the slot since moving to S (in obvious passing or goal line situations) but I think Logan Ryan (probably already slated to play extensively) or Robert McClain would be the PT beneficiaries with Arrington gone.

If the Pats are going to more off / zone coverage, Arrington would seem a pretty good fit (he's also a good tackler at CB), so cutting him was surprising in light of jettisoning all the press man guys. I wonder if the Pats might play more base this year. One of the advantages of playing zone is that you don't need to match the offense's personnel because you're not matching up man-to-man anyway. It would be a way to get all of Collins / Hightower / Mayo on the field and do interesting things with the fronts. It would also help the run D against 3 WR sets, which has been a problem for years. This is basically how the Steelers / LeBeau defense has worked for years (and they traditionally play a lot of base against 3 WR sets). That would be a hell of a "zig while everyone is zagging" move, though perhaps a dubious one.

Shoulda known with Grissom and Flowers that DE depth was sufficient...Just no room for a guy like Arrington anymore.  :nsmith:

Thanking the Pats for his "incredible opportunity" does not seem consistent with a revolving door that has him back in the building after a restructure. The Twitter thank you would be superfluous. At the very least, it seems he is checking stuff out and there is a very good chance he winds up elsewhere.

Seems reasonable.  If they could have agreed on financial terms he'd still be here, so would be weird to think its a lock they would figure that out.

This chart also has Patrick Chung tied for fifth best slot corner in the league.

The chart shows # of receptions given up per coverage snap. Since Chung was covering RBs and TEs in the slot, his numbers would be viewed differently than true corners who were covering WRs.

Anyone else really concerned about our current depth chart? I mean, the last we saw of Logan Ryan he was getting absolutely abused by mediocre Seahawks receivers. Bradley Fletcher was a human turnstile for Philly last year. Malcolm Butler made the bestest play in the history of ever but is still largely unproven. And the rest of the guys are new/young. If the front 7 doesn't improve like we hope/expect, things could get really ugly unless Belichick can work more magic. There is some cap space to play with so hopefully a solid vet is added to this group in the summer and isn't in the Duane Starks mold.
It's hard to be rational on either side of this issue right now.

On one side: they lack proven CBs, what are they going to do?!?!?
On the other side: in Belichick we trust.

There's really insufficient data for any meaningful conclusion about what the secondary will be like next season.  We're stuck waiting for the next shoe(s) to drop.

No, I love the depth. Cutting Arrington just made my pants shorter.
