I don't think it says anything about Boston. We don't know who turned it off because of it, and who thought it was funny. Such baseless generalizations are stupid and useless.

It's not a baseless generalization. It's certainly just my feeling, not a proven fact...but it's far from baseless. This is the top-rated morning show in the metro area. The show went on with this crap forever, and they had an endless stream of callers just loving the whole thing.

If people were really unhappy with it, you'd see a dip in the ratings or a rash of complaints. I'm not holding my breath on either.

Well, you can breathe, since both of those things have happened.

Dip in the ratings: their market share has been cut in half since last year (from ~13 to~7)

Rash of complaints: happens quite often (google "METCO gorilla").

I actually heard about 10 minutes of this morning's show, and that is exactly what came to mind. In my opinion, they were straying dangerously close to a METCO gorilla situation. I fully understand that there is an audience for that type of [insert your own word here], but it has also been proven that people sometimes lose their jobs because of it.

My first thought was that they are trying to get fired, because they'll be able to say it was due to the whiny liberals, which for them is a less embarrassing exit than losing to Toucher and Rich.

I think they missed the mark if this was indeed an attempt to bond with their listeners. If you're a listener who didn't mind the METCO comment, and enjoy the usual D&C political rants than lets face it todays skit only made you love them more. But they will have those listeners no matter what, and I'm not sure that going in this direction will get those fringe listeners. If they are trying to relate to their listeners like T&R do, then maybe just maybe be a little self deprecating once in a while so that the listeners can relate to you.

I missed the gay stuff. But I did hear D' scream at C' for about five min's, for calling Mark Mangino (KU) every fat name he could come up with. Why this got to John (250 lbs?) I don't know, but he popped his cork. So maybe the gay segment was a return to normalcy?

T&R have nothing to do with it, this is who they are and what they do. I didn't listen yesterday but have heard Callahan go off on homophobic tirades in the past where I was shocked he was getting away with it and from what I read above, yesterday was tame compared to 2004 with Queer Eye was doing show with the Sox and the again a few years ago when he just went off (I don't remember why).

IIRC, they didn't lose any ground in their target demographic to T&R and quite honestly there is such a stark contrast between the two shows they aren't really competing for the same listener. Honestly, when D&C are talking about sports like they were on Monday after the loss to the Colts, they are usually fantastic unfortunately politics is more their cup of tea.

Long story short, there will be absolutely NO fall out. In sports radio around the country (except for maybe California) if you want to go off on a homophobic tirade have fun, but stay away from any racial comments or we will suspend/fire you.

They must have gotten some negative feedback, as the brief time I spent listening this morning they were talking about how much great feedback they got, reading emails thanking them, etc.

Toucher and Rich laughing and mocking D&C about the gay segment.

I switched over during a 98.5 commercial to D&C and it's amazing how out of touch and just "old" they sound now. I was able to listen to Meter and Callahan discuss if there are any Jewish Nascar fans or drivers for about 30 seconds before switching back over to 98.5 commercials.

The feedback probably wasn't that negative because they spent a good amount of time this morning ragging on Chastity Bono and explicitly discussing her planned gender reassignment surgery. I half-expected to hear Robin Givens cackling in the background.

I would remove sports from your comment, but I think it's dead on accurate. I can think of multiple radio personalities who were fired for racial comments (Even Howard Stern came close to losing his job after joking about Selena's murder in '95); but I can't think of one who was canned for homophobic comments.

Also, radio personalities seem to get a pass for certain types of racism. Asians and Middle Easterners seem to be fair game.

You're right. Although, I think a radio jock can get away with more Muslim comments than Asian. I don't recall the exact details, but I remember a radio guy having to apologize for a comment or song that offended Asians. We're still too close to 9/11 (And involved in wars) for that type of move by a Muslim group to be successful.

I think the problem is that they have had homophobic rants in the past which makes that particular segment unfunny.

Judd Apatow can get away with a "You know hiow I know your gay" type of thing because he's not a nutty right wing whacko who has condemed gays in the past. It is impossible for them to be "cool" about this stuff because we already know where they are coming from.

Also, they are outdated. Not only is the Grey's thing outright wrong, but at least be hip enough to replace ABBA with Lady Gaga or something. They sounded like they got their gay culture jokes from 2002.

This show is just fucking terrible.

They're ruthlessly trashing Moss as a 'diva' - they actually think that TD pass was an attempt to appease him.

And now: the Pats don't have a RB, shutdown corner, pass rusher, Mayo is overrated, etc. Also, Rhodes is a 'better safety.' Than who? Not altogether clear.

Gerry Callahan is a retard.

I listened to this same rant this morning, I think they've lost their minds at this point. Rhodes was absolutely horrible yesterday, and most Jet fans I know talk all the time about how overrated he is. They're just two miserable old guys who hate life.

I agree with all of the above...yet I still usually end up listening to them as long as they aren't bashing gays that particular morning.

Why is morning drive-time radio such a complete wasteland? Can't there be one program that features two or three thoughtful, intelligent people discussing the latest happenings in news/sports? There are plenty of decent shows in the afternoon...why do radio programmers think that we only want to hear gay jokes, sound effects (quack quack), and prank calls between 7 and 9 every morning?

People are too tired in the morning to bother changing the channel?

I know I'm going to get bashed for saying this, but if you want a morning radio show that is strictly sports, you might want to try to listen to Mike and Mike on espnradio. They are not everybody's favorite cup of tea (for example many people are turned off by Mike Greenberg's meta sexual personality and Mike Golic's utter lack of sports knowledge) . In addition, since they are a national show, you won't always hear the Boston perspective on sports stories. However, they do get great guests from time to time and you don't have to worry about racist rants or juvenile "pranks." So take that for what it's worth.

No, but you'll have to hear things like Golic getting forced to milk a cow.

I don't mind "Mike and Mike," and they do get good guests obviously, but they're as "cutesy" as it gets. They're exactly what Disney wants as the face of ESPN Radio, and they do their job well. But their job doesn't always include providing riveting sports talk.

For national shows, I really like the "Dan Patrick Show." You're much more likely to hear a good conversation, or a strong opinion there.

I appreciate your opinion. Having said that (cue Larry David), I despise these two. You're correct, they do get great interviews. Unfortunately Greenberg ruins most interviews by asking "how are my Jets going to do this weekend?" and he somehow thinks this is "cute".

I loved Will Leitch's description of these two in his book:
Mike Golic - the FAT one
Mike Greenberg - the GAY one

Heard it relatively briefly today, but really enjoyed it. Obviously due to the slow week it was a bit more meandering/conversational than a usual show, but good nonetheless, from what I heard.

I like Ryan, but he sounds like he at least 20-25 cups of coffee before/during the show. This is nothing new, but he talks a mile a minute, and didn't let Jacke get 2 words in.

I was hoping to hear more behind the scenes stories about Jackie's book, but granted, I only got to listen 10-15 minutes of the show.

I listened for about five minutes today, and I have to say it was the funniest five minutes ever.

Apparently Callahan and the rest of his family went on vacation to the islands (at a place called Dreams, never heard of it). He started off his rant by saying, "I went to an all-inclusive resort and they overcharge you, which I have no problem with (sure you don't) but they also steal from you!" I thought that he was being figurative, but he was being literal.

Apparently, 10 minutes after the Kallahan Klan arrived, Gerry went to the beach and took off his leather flip flops ("The ones that I got at Miltons, Meter!") to check out the water and when he went back up to retrieve his togs, they were gone! Gone! Then his dopey son got a PSP (Gerry called it a PS3, but I think that he meant the PSP -- "Which is expensive, John!") and the idiot left it on his beach chair to jump in the surf. When he came back, the PSP was gone! Gone! Some other guy (not Gerry) got his sunglasses stolen at the pool ("Not even the beach, Meter!") too.

I must have looked crazy as I entered the parking lot, because I was laughing and laughing and laughing.

It couldn't have happened to a better family.

Play Station Portable.

I forgot another part of the story, when Callahan said to Meterperell, "Those were the shoes I got at Miltons!" Meter answered, "Oh Gerry! Those were nice!"

They sounded like a couple of ladies on the View dishing about shoes and when vacations don't go your way.

Great guy talk, gentlemen!

I can't wait for the day when that dopey son comes home to the Kallahan plantation and greats his father with these words: "Dad. I want you to meet the most important person in my life, my soul-mate, my life partner. And here HE is."

How fucking great would that be! His heart would seize like an engine that just lost all its engine oil.

I finally figured it out. I figured out the reason why I hate Dennis and Callahan so much. It's the smugness.

This morning while Toucher and Rich were on a break, I flipped over to see if they were talking sports. They had on Mike Mullaley (Rooster's Stache on SoSH) on and he was talking to them about the iPhone app. So Callahan breaks into the story to tell the amazing tale of his buddy who went to Hanover, NH for his kid's hockey tourney or something. Gerry said that his friend was surrounded by "egg heads with pony tails" (I have no clue why this is a put down, but whatever) and his buddy was sick of it.

So the next morning, his friend and another guy went into a coffee shop, pulled out the iPhone and clicked on the EEI app and blasted as loud as they could. Callahan said all of those egg heads with pony tails were pissed because they were in the middle of headlines and the eggheads didn't know what to do!

Yes, Gerry. People were pissed at the insane babbling of two retarded chimps trying to wrap their heads around the day's events. They aren't pissed at the passive aggressive asshole who at 7:30 decides to blast his iPhone in a public area and then giggles about with his friend. Callahan has really edgy, fuck-you-establishment friends. Fight the power, man. Fight the fucking power.

Yeah. That's exactly who I mean.

I watched a rerun of "Parks and Rec" and Megan Mullaley was on as Ron Swanson's ex wife. I must have her on the brain.

Brady this morning saying losing players like Rodney, Richard, Izzo, Willie, Mike, etc. who are exceptional and that level of player just isn't available on the waiver wire or free agency as replacement. It's not the Patriots jersey, it's the players.

I think that's his way of saying 'I can only do so much with what we've got right now.'

Reminds me of the story in Buster Olney’s ‘Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty’ when a reporter noted to Derek Jeter after the ‘01 loss to the D’backs how much the Yankees had accomplished in recent years, and Jeter responded ‘Some of us have’.

Best part of all this is that Dennis was taking an emailer to task earlier in the week when they had the nerve to complain about the incessant politicking. His response was to the effect of "we cover headlines at 7:30 for five minutes, so you must be new around here". Actually, "Dino", you can't talk sports for the 10 minutes I'm in the car most mornings without it sliding into politics so the feedback was from somebody who is overly familiar with your format.

Oh yeah, I heard that garbage on Tuesday about "only talking politics for 5 minutes". Kudos to them cuz this morning's absolute tripe actually got me to listen to Toucher and Rich and I found it amusing. Good work guys.
