California. Duh.
9/9. Definitely my quickest one so far to complete.

Roberto Hernandez is definitely an MVP of this game. Just make sure you pick the right one (not the former Fausto Carmona).

Today's took me about a minute. Probably could have lowered the rarity score if I took more time but it was nice not really agonizing over any of them for once.
Slocumb's face pretty much matches my face during his appearances.

I got my second 9/9 in a row after never having one before. 104 score. Having so many AL east teams helped. Surprised that Rizzuto was as low as he was, but I guess there are just so many options to pick from for that one. Too many.

I had thought that Olerud had gotten something like 210 hits in his great ‘93 season, but it was exactly 200. I must have confused with Molitor who had 211.

I mixed up John Vukovich and Pete Vuckovich
I'm surprised I got that low a score.

Fuck me, I missed the most common 9 by ONE SQUARE today. 8/9. Was sure the 200+ hit/100+ RBI guy was gonna be the one I missed but 11% was the tops.

The Brewers 200+ hit guy got me. Went with Molitor instead of Yount.

Today’s game appears to be broken. We ALL know this guy averaged 200+ hits a season against the Red Sox alone:

15 points today. Surprised the guy in the middle was so high - I thought he'd be a rarity.
Pic wouldn't download
Phil Niekro (.4) Mike Timlin (.2) Shannon Stewart (3)
Julio Franco (.6) Geoff Jenkins (6) Cecil Cooper (3)
Matt Williams (.2) Don Hurst (.04) Chuck Klein (.1)

BAH. So close. Carlos Delgado had 196 hits in 2000.

This game has made me realize that there are some statistical categories that I’m pretty ignorant of. Career saves was one (is 300 a lot?) and today, 200 hits. I assume that’s a lot, but I have no just how rare it is. Can I just guess any good hitter (like the 100 RBI category), or do I need to really think about guys with excellent bat to ball tools?Turns out it’s definitely the latter. For example, Nomar only did it once. Pedroia twice. Manny never came particularly close.

Yeah, you also have to think about guys who's were really good "hitters" but WALKED a lot and avoid them too. Bonds never got 200 in a season because he walked so much (and later WAS walked so much).

8/9 rarity score 231 today. My downfall was getting cute by going with Hack Wilson for bottom center initially and then discovering that he only played like 7 games for them. Could have sworn he spent a few seasons there.

Another quick one until I got to the center square. Then I remembered, because I'm trying to get him and Sam Horn in the same grid. I have gotten both in different ones.

We matched a lot of choices today. Crazy.

9/9

Yeah, but you completed it, Congrats!
Manny was my first thought on lower right but I thought Belle was a lower RS score. Jim Ed is always a low score in Immaculate Grid. Plus is a lifetime Red Sock, win/win.

It's a stat that tends to favor players who have a fairly unique combination of skills:
  • excellent bat to ball as you mentioned
  • decent foot speed/baserunning which will assist in accumulating a higher overall number of hits due to legging out ground balls etc. It also influences higher lineup placement, which results in more plate appearances on average
  • Good injury history; simply because more games=more at-bats. It's really difficult to get to 200 without getting 550-600 at-bats/playing at least 140-145 games.
This is pretty clear when you look at the players with the most 200 seasons: Ichiro 10, Rose 10, Cobb 9, Jeter 8, Gehrig 8, Waner 8, Keeler 8, Boggs 7, Gehringer 7, Hornsby 7.

I was very confident when I entered Robin Yount as the Brewer with 200+ hits / 100+ RBI. After I finished and looked it up, he only did that one time- in 1982, with 210 Hits and 114 RBI.

Once again, tried to get too cute on my wrong answer. Remembered that Tommy Herr had 100 RBI with something like 8 HR one year, thinking he must have had 200 hits. Nope. It was his career high in hits, but it was only 180. Then the last few answers I just went for the first thing that popped in my head.

Today is the first day that they're releasing the puzzle at 9am eastern instead of midnight. Kind of a bummer, I enjoyed doing it first thing every day.

Guess it will have to be a lunchtime activity now. Went pretty smooth so maybe there's an advantage in being a bit more awake.

1.)I remembered Mike Jacobs because Joe Posnanski wrote a story about him having a bobblehead on Jewish Heritage Night (or something like that), except he isn't Jewish. The team clearly saw his last name and just assumed he was Jewish.
2.) I got cute on the OAK All-Star square. I tried Eric Chavez and it turns out he never made an All-Star team in his career.

I got lucky on an educated guess of Fernando Rodney in the middle square for my 3rd or 4th 9/9 and my best score yet (though still well over 100)

My best one yet. Rarity score of 47.

I was going to do Piazza with the Mets and Marlins before remembering he also spent some time in Oakland.

Am I the only person that remembers guys like Jose Lima (pitched for the Royals and NL ‘strips) and Kevin Appier (I think I was constantly pulling his card from Topps/Donruss decks in the early 90s)?

Yeah, I too thought I was being clever with Piazza as a Met/Marlin, but he turned out to be my highest percentage, so a lot of other people must have had the same idea! Should’ve gone with Carlos Delgado instead.

My big mistake today was:
Eric Chavez was never an all star?! Big surprise, but must have been a glut of 3B at that time.

Just looked at 2002 and...
Bahahaha Shea Hillenbrand was the AL starter. Stuffing the ballot box indeed. Chavez finished 14th in MVP voting and won the gold glove and silver slugger at 3rd base. That AS vote didn't age well!

9/9 rarity score 56. I kinda love the fact that everyone (myself included) is going with Piazza in the Marlins row because he only played 5 games for them and it ends up being a pretty high % answer.

Also feels strange that the Royals have only had 48 total all stars in 55 seasons. I know they've had a lot of lean years over the past 30 odd seasons, but I would have thought they had lots of years with multiple all star selections in the late 70's and 80's.

9/9 and 23 RS, by far my best. Highlights:
- Nolan Ryan was more than half my score
- Really surprised how rare all my all-star picks were
- Dan Schatzeder was a 0.01% pick in the upper left - maybe the lowest possible player score? (That isn't a guess or a cheat, he just happens to be one of those that played for a million teams including 4/5 AL central teams)
- I'll admit, top middle was a total guess. Again someone who played for 10+ teams but a hail mary that he played for those two.

I screwed up immediately thinking Juan Soto had hit 40. How I don’t throw my phone through a fucking wall every day I don’t know.
