This was by far my best showing; and only did this well because the Sox were represented. Aaand I suppose I cheated a tiny bit because I entered the wrong Dave Roberts (dang common names!) and was so pissed I went back and re-did it, this time coming up with Jefferson. Aaand Bobby Bonds was a total shot in the dark.

The team-to-team squares are really tough. I have a good memory of players who played for one team for a while, and then the big stars who made a mid-career move (Ken Griffey, A-Rod, etc.), but as to the journeymen, I have nothing like the encyclopedic memory needed.

I like conjuring up memories of forgettable part-timers but I'm not sure I agree with that... it creates so many possible answers, most of whom no one will remember anyway. On the other hand, maybe they could add new categories now, like .000 batting average. I do think they should get rid of the qualification that the player had to play in an official game for the team, though. Pablo Sandoval was traded to Cleveland and received a paycheck from them. He should qualify for the top left corner today.

First time getting a double-digit rarity score for me (I got a 50):

Brandon Phillips being the only Ohio crossover player I could think of really screwed me.

I’m hopeless against my 16 year old. He know all the players of today and enough from xBox to consistently beat me. But not today… a Red Sox block and I’m in business.

Rarity 36. 3B before Boggs, the Count and a broken down Brooklyn Dodger how threw his last pitch for the Tribe.

Congrats if you mean it is the first non-triple digit rarity score.
Back in the old days, Buddy Bell playing for both Ohio teams stuck with me. Other players had done it. I just didn't know about.

Inspired by Josh Bard (whose trouble catching Wake ignited the Dougie Goes Deep saga) popping in my head for the top left it's the first time I have done a Grid with the Nats where I didn't pick any Expos :) My time watching the last game of the '88 ALCS and first game of the '88 WS continues to pay off - this time with A's '88 rookie of the year Walt Weiss. I'm surprised how many people touched on Beltre's head (and we know the consequences of touching Beltre's head ;) ) as the 40+ HR person for the Dodgers.

I rarely get all 9 but I also only give myself like 10 minutes max to do it so I don't obsess all day. Pretty happy with today's results:

68562

192 Score is my new lowest.

Then why didn't you have Mike Davis or Alfredo Griffin in the center square for a lower score? ;)

I missed another one by refusing to go with the two obvious answers... and the 3rd possible answer never crossed my mind. I don't even think about the Nats unless I'm completely stumped for Expos. Got my childhood favorite for a .009%. Also, sometimes I just have no idea how everyone else thinks – I thought Fernando Valenzuela was too obvious for Dodgers/Pads. I checked in another browser and he's 0.8%!

9/9 - score of 97. I always feel a little bit defeated when have to use Matt Stairs. Before remembering my actual answer, I almost guessed Davey Lopes for Dodgers 40 home run season; I was thinking of Davey Johnson, who would have worked for Atlanta.

RS- 212
The fastest I ever got it.
When Doolittle got 30%, I decided just pick the surest name I could. Surprised Garvey and McGriff were low scores. And of all those great Expos players, only one had a 40+ plus season as an Expo.

I have a question about the rarity score. If someone is the first person in a day to do the grill shouldn’t their rarity be 100%?

I used Roger LaFrancois yesterday for the Red Sox .300 hitter, and he was .003%, but if I was the second submitter of the day wouldn’t he be 50%? And if I did it at the end of the day and I was the only one to use him wouldn’t his number likely be smaller if no one else chose him?

Love the game, just trying to figure this out.

You are right as the first one to finish your RS should be 900. But your rarity score does change as the day goes on.

9/9 rarity score 58. Had to use one cheat code, but I'm proud of my bottom center pick. And I finally got to use NOMAH!

Also surprised there were so few Nats/Expos to hit 40 dingers. Was thinking about going with Andre Dawson, Larry Walker or Anthony Rendon before I fortunately settled on Vlad.

I had that happen to me yesterday and once or twice before. The first 8 squares showed 100% and when I completed the last square everything recalculated and percentages readjusted.

Agreed, this was a good one. Unsurprisingly, my most common answer was my one guy who’s still active. Maybe that’s “active” in quotes.

the 500 Hr/300 career average and silver slugger/hof took me the longest to think of for some reason

Yep fun and fairly easy. The silver slugger could be tricky as I'm not sure how long that has been awarded. 9/9...RS 49... 5 former Sox used. I'm wondering if there is a configuration that might use 9 former Sox.
No
No Sox, or former Sox, player had 500 home runs and won a Gold Glove. Yaz came closest. But if a certain trade went through, Alex Rodriguez would fit

I think you could find 9 RS players who would qualify for pretty much any configuration. The one category that I can come up with where no Red Sox player fits is one from todays grid: 500+ career HR and Gold Glove.

I thought I was hallucinating when I opened this one today. I prefer guessing the teams.

Anyway, I screwed this one up because I thought Tony Gwynn won an MVP. I always forget to use Ichiro. At least I remembered to use Papi

The silver slugger award has only been given out since 1980, which I wished I had looked up before blowing my lay-up of an answer.

69 (nice) for me. I like that Willie Mays could have been used for everything if they had awarded Silver Sluggers before 1980.

39... thanks to my realization the other day that they count the early versions of the MVP award.

9/9 I got all the answers fairly easy. After completing 8/9 I took a leap on my final selection - MVP/.300 hitter. Joe Mauer was not great at the end of his career, and I thought maybe it dragged his career average down to something just under .300; I went with him anyway, and was right. (He hit .306 in his career in case anybody was curious)

After 2 days of 8/9 got it today with a rarity score of 41. Should have taken a little more time I rushed my Pete Roseanswer.
