The thread title seems premature

I wonder whether this is just the Yankees trying to put pressure on Cano

I hate to lose Ells.  I hate even more that it's the mfy.  The only thing that will make me feel better is seeing the final numbers in the 8/180 range.

Does this put the Yankees out of the running for Cano?

Edit: Cot's has them at $100m on the books for 2014 going into the offseason

How does this work with regards to draft pick compensation, since they also signed McCann?

NOOOOOOO!!!!!

Please tell me this is completely unfounded.  As much as I'd like to see him return I've resolved myself to the fact that he likely won't.  Going to the Yankees is not something I even want to consider.  I'd much prefer him in Seattle where I can feel good about him succeeding without doing any real damage to us.

I want no part of Ells for more than the Crawford deal - he'll have some good years but I don't think he's worth that much. Thanks for the WS Ells

They have the money to support a payroll of 300 million.

I think all this talk about "staying under the cap" was all bullshit.

"Look, Robby, we are committed to winning. We have a new catcher and center fielder. All we need now is a 2B. Never mind who is going to pitch..."

Or they have moved on from Cano.

This is the least shocking news ever. So do we hate him now?

Two World Series titles. Any Red Sox fan who boos him should be thrown face-first into a pile of cobras.

I understand the reality of the FA market and the Yankees position within that FA market this year but it still stinks. 'Of all the teams' so to speak.

I'll still applaud him for what he did here throughout his prime but it'll hurt more than Damon, both on the field in the short term and for his Red Sox legacy overall; 3 years from now do you think sox fans cheer?

He and Gardner will be terrors on the basepath.

I can't hate Ells after this.  Like Youks last year, the MFYs offered him a contract that exceeded anything else he could on the market (at least I am assuming that).

I just can't get used to the idea of seeing him without a beard.

On a slightly more serious note, the notion of him in storm trooper garb is nauseating.  But I would have been more sick had the Sox thrown stupid money at him.

They lose their second round pick. This is what they did in the 2008-2009 off-season. Signed several compensation free agents but only lost one first round pick.

If Slappy is suspended, they still have room for Cano and Ells. But I think they'd be out on Tanaka at that point if they want to be under 189.

Good for him. Maybe this is enough to make Yankee games interesting again. And I ask again...can he pitch?

The Yankees are so left handed now, makes keeping Lester a priority and hopefully developing Doubie

If the Yankees are handing out these kind of years and money, why not just sign Cano? On the other hand, if they sign both that would be fantastic.

On the one hand, I hate seeing Ells go and I'm not real psyched he's headed to the Bronx. On the other hand, that is one noodle-armed outfield along with Gardner.

Draft pick!

Passan said this signing doesn't preclude also signing Cano. Contract madness and still lots of pitching to find.

Any reason why the Braves get the first rounder and we don't?

Well, if Ellsbury can get his power stroke back he will hit a few more HR in that park. This puts a bit of spice back in the rivalry.

Not at all sad to see Ellsbury walk away, especially at 7/$150M.  Somewhat chagrined to see him head to the Yankees, not because It's The Yankees, but because he's exactly the kind of player who gives us fits and I don't really want to see him 19 times a year.

The real test, and the question that will determine how awful this is, is what we do with the payroll flexibility.  (It wasn't McCann!)

Eh, when you're up 3 W.S. titles to 1 over the past decade, losing a guy like Ells doesn't really sting.  He's a good player, but not a great one, and I don't think Dreamboat was a term of endearment on this board.  Ells was never the face of the franchise, either.

Seven (or whatever) years of Ells as a Yankee is going to blow, but I doubt many on this board would want him at anything close to Crawford money. I surely wouldn't.

Well, if they are still in on Cano its kiss 189 goodbye and time to compete again.  The revenue projections must have come in for 2014 and knocked Hank and Hals socks off.

Nobody gets a true 1st rounder. Both Bos and Atl get supplemental round picks.

Not the way it works anymore, Sox and Braves each get sandwich picks.
Also Yanks compensation picks(assuming they get at least one for Granderson) aren't protected they will lose those before they lose the second round pick.
