Hanley Ramirez signs with Red Sox. 4 years/$88 million(5th year option could make it 5/$110 million

If that's true, it's pretty much a steal.

People were predicting (I believe someone on fangraphs) 140M for Hanley...

When healthy, he is an elite-level offensive talent.  However health is a huge question mark with this guy.

Sox will rely on deep depth for Hanley's downtime.

What I love the most about this is the flexibility it offers.

The current hole has just been plugged at third - but when Cecchini is ready for prime time he's not necessarily blocked.  Hanley can move out to LF or over to first depending on the needs at that time.

Or maybe Cecchini is part of a trade for a pitcher, like to the Pads for Ross.

5/90??? Did someone get some kind of calculation wrong? There is no way in hell Hanley freaking Ramirez gets less than Kung Fu Panda. Right???!

It may be the Hanley signing that will push Pablo to Boston.
I actually think it will be the opposite. The sox got tired of sandovals games and went to Hanley.

Good deal or not, this deal bums me out in a few respects:

- some evidence that he's a bad clubhouse guy

- he's lousy defensively

- assuming they are still in on panda and various pitchers, aren't the sox revisiting the Carl Crawford days to an extent here

- could mean x or betts is gone for Hamels

Pretty incredible. At that price and length it's hard to see much of a downside, other than the fact that the left-side defense will be a bit of an adventure next year (assuming no further dominoes fall there).
I know he doesn't have the range to play short anymore, but is there any reason why he can't be a decent third baseman?

I love the difference between the SoSH reaction and the Twitter reaction. They had it, you like it and I trust you a hell of a lot more than Twitter.

And maybe DH down the line. I don't think in 2016, even if Papi is done after next year, but in 3 or 4 years, sure.

This is just increasingly bizarre and I can't wait to hear what's going on with Sandoval. Are we still in? Were we ever in? This just materialized out of nowhere over six hours. In fact, I heard very little about ANY team even meeting with Ramirez at all over the offseason. There was little, if any, speculation about him going anywhere.

I just need more details, like right now.

Assuming Hanley is on board (which, you'd hope, would be a fair assumption), this means the Sox can continue to pursue Pablo, can keep looking to use Cespedes as a trade chip, and even (God forbid) can trade Xander if the Angels decide they absolutely have to get out from under the crushing deal they gave to Mike Trout. Man, lots to like here. Lots.

(for the record, the Trout thing is a joke)

I dont think Signing HanRam means the Red Sox are out on Sandoval. I think they really want to sign them both. Both of them gives the Red Sox a ton of options. All of Cespedes, WMB, Cecchini, JBJ, Craig, and Victorino can be easily traded without any real effect on the major league team. That can really help fill the holes in the rotation and bullpen.
Ben is going to be very busy this offseason....

Please, can we stop saying ridiculous things? There is no way Bogaerts or Betts is going to philly for Hamels. Stop.

Also, this is a phenomenal deal. Maybe let's skip the cloud-seeking for this giant silver lining we just found out about ten seconds ago.

Great deal, I just hope they really aren't still considering Sandoval for 3rd with Hanley signed now.  Just put Hanley at 3rd with his plus bat that could become an even bigger plus at Fenway and a little time at DH when Ortiz has the day off or even end up on the disabled list for a little while given that he isn't getting any younger.

I mean, that's barely more than Russell Martin money! What the hell happened?! Not looking the gift horse in the mouth just... this is a great signing. And much, much more than Sandoval, Ramirez would be a solid candidate to step into the Ortiz role if it came to that going forward.

Yes, please - if Hanley is back, the Sox don't need a third guy on the left side of the infield (though the pitchers might wish for one now and then...) I think the choice here is between Hanley and Panda. I don't think there's a choice to be made between Panda and Xander at all - Xander stays, and it's time to add some pitching!

That's fantastic. Step away from Sandoval, press on with Lester and the Cespedes deal.

Hanley strikes me as somewhat riskier proposition then the Sandoval but he also offers so much more up side, I have no difficulty in preferring him to Pablo on the same money.
