So to be clear, we're looking at maybe a sending off for Lovren and a sending off for Mignolet, and a penalty on Sterling....and I've just put thegame on the last 15 minutes.

You missed the 2 Saints penalty shouts in the first 4 minutes, with Coutinho's Goal of the Season candidate in-between.

The replay was pretty awful. They stopped two or three frames after it had come off Migs. I'm not convinced it came off him outside the box, or that it was his hand and not his face.

Friend is having a far worse game than Atkinson.

Ok watching the replays....

First southampton shout, no penalty.

Second shout, YES.

Sterling's shout, oof.  Close.  He did get the ball but a lot of the player.

Mignolet, hand ball should have been called but not a sending off.  He touched the ball twice, first time in the box second time out of the box.

The camera is also misaligned with the top of the box so it would have been tough to definitively tell if he was beyond the line... Also the referees assistant was way out of position to make a call.

Yeah, I still can't tell exactly where Mignolet was when he touched the ball with that camera angle, and the ref had an even worse angle.

I agree with these judgments.  I dont think the Sterling call is usually a penalty, even if the tackle looked very clumsy.  Yes, its a foul technically even if the defender plays the ball.  But this happens all the time in the box (a defender plays the ball and fouls the player at the same time or on the follow through) and referees almost always decline to give penalties.

On Mignolet, in real time I think its almost impossible to make that judgment so I don't have a problem with the ref letting play go on.  I thought Lovren could easily have been sent off though for his foul.

Allen knew he'd conceded a penalty.

Sterling's claim was clear for me.

Lovren should be off.

It should be interesting to see if Friend watching his performance at halftime and decides for some make ups.

There were so many controversial calls in the first half that they didn't even talk about the Lovren foul at halftime.

I agree with all of this.  The "he got the ball first" argument forgets that there's nothing about getting the ball first in the fucking rules.  It's an English invention.  He took the player out, it's a foul.

Nick Ames over at the Guardian MBM made the balls-on point that outside of the talking points, there's no rhythm to this match at all.

I guess another way to look at it is it's there for one side to take over if they can crack the code.

This game is a case study in why clubs pay stupid money for players who can put the ball on net.

The Ibe substitution must be to try to keep him fresh.  Roll the dice with the old man for 15 minutes.

Away win against a rival for a top four spot. Another clean sheet away from home. Results going their way. Great week for Liverpool.

All the talk in the 2nd penalty challenge is obviously about Allen's contact (and it should have been a penalty), but it was a really great save by Mignolet as the play continued.

I absolutely love every time Rebecca Lowe stops herself halfway through saying "controversy" and corrects herself to the American pronunciation.
