Well, spitting on someone is considered battery. Depending on the state and DA, it could be considered self-defense!

Its unbelievable to me the huge number of awful things that employees of the National Felons League "get away with", in that players in the league have loads of runs ins with the law (ranging from murder to dozens of DWIs) each year, yet the "brand" remains unaffected/ever more popular, even with many popular former players badmouthing it over the concussion/CTE crisis....

Top comment on that article:

"Figures Rice couldn't manage more than 3 yards on this carry."

I know it's at the Deadspin link, but I feel the need to post these comments from Rice's lawyer:

"... the video that's being posted by TMZ Sports is not the complete event, but is merely the end result of what transpired."

No shit, Sherlock.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
The articles linked to deadspin say there's video of them hitting each other with their hands.  Who knows, really, what those videos show - but if they show that it's likely they'll show who was the initial physical aggressor.  (Also, no info on whether either had been drinking.)

It looks like she's conscious by the end.  Oddly enough, unconsciousness is not usually seen as an "injury" which makes a simple battery more severe.  (Felony battery is usually something done with a weapon, or which results in a scar or serious physical injury.  Formulations vary from state to state.)

What's really weird is the security guard's response.  You think he'd go over to see if she was breathing.  He just kinds of stands around though.

As Rice moves away, he goes to her, but at that point she's getting up a bit under her own power so clearly alive. Before that, we don't know what the security officer knows, but if he knows it's Ray Rice, that would be ample reason for him to keep his distance. One of the things they teach you in EMT training is that trying to hero is all well and good, but you don't do any good if you get your ass killed in the process of trying to help someone.

High-end casino has to be on the short list of stupid fucking places to do something like this yeah? I mean, unless you're cutting them in on some action...

That will eventually change, if this keeps up.

Not as bad as Sharper

No, but Sharper is not a current player. Maybe that shouldn't matter, but it does. If anything, Sharper adds context in that it causes us to wonder what the players we root for are doing that we just don't know about... but might learn later.

The point though is that what happens with current players affects the on-field product. So basically, I don't know what your point is supposed to be.

Does it matter that Sharper is one of the main guys featured as an analyst on the NFL Network? He's not your average former player when it comes to the league image.

That's right, you used to work clubs there.  I bet this wouldn't even make your top 10 list of biggest shit that you saw while in AC.

Maybe, maybe not. I mean, I don't have NFL Network and don't have a sense of their viewership. But at the end of the day, I think that things that change competitive balance will always matter more.

This got me thinking about the Hernandez thing. Did finding out an NFL player murdered a whole buncha people even touch the needle? I think the really interesting scenario here would be if we get solid evidence that Rice engaged in serious partner abuse and is not suspended or anything, our approach to domestic violence being what it is, and seeing how, if at all, people react.

As horrific as it looks and sounds, any action on the part of the NFL would be far down the road.  You know how they love the ole' "We'll let the legal process run it's course".  And would anyone be even remotely surprised if the GF decided not to press charges?  It's disgusting all the way around.

I believe that the house numbers for Tufton Springs Lane run from 2300 to 2415.  And it looks like there are only four houses in the 2400 section.

Good job, good effort indeed.

This is more RR's bailiwick, but I think this would be an instance where they wouldn't need the GF to press charges because of the tape.  Press charges is a bit of a misnomer - the state is always the entity pressing charges, but in some instances they need the victim's testimony and evidence, and if the victim is unwilling to provide both or either the state doesn't really have a case, so they'll drop the charges.

As for the video showing them hitting each other, whether that matters from a legal standpoint, it certainly doesn't matter for a moral one.

Marciano pretty much nails it.  (Whenever you hear the false "victim has to press charges" argument, think of murder victims - they don't "press charges.")

DV can be difficult to prosecute since beyond being unwilling to testify the victim sometimes recants (saying they lied) or further muddies up the water by claiming to have started the physical violence (making self-defense a near certain defense).  If the prosecutors have a video, front to back of the entire thing, they could probably go forward with the video itself and call an uncooperative victim as a hostile witness.  I'm not sure if they have a very strong incentive to do that in this type of case though.  I think most would be happy to get the couple into counseling or whatnot (as flawed as it is) rather than fight tooth and nail for the very slim possibility of putting a guy in jail for a month or two.

There's no way there's a town actually named "Keistertown, MD".  That'd be like there being a "Belchertown, MA".  Does not exist.

Names of sports people here better still. Columnist Peter Schmuck. And, of course, the unfortunately named announcer Jerry Sandusky.

Its a shame he couldn't hang on at the end.

In other news, I predict that there will be lots of moral outrage about this event too.  And then the NFL will set more viewership records next season.

And rightly so as far as I'm concerned. I loved it back in the day when the Old Regime of the Patriots signed Lawrence Phillips and released him after like a day after the media flipped the fuck out. As I recall, the team's official response was, "Er, um... oops?"

You're thinking of Christian Peter, not Lawrence Phillips.  The team drafted him and then released him days later, pleading ignorance about the fact that he was convicted of domestic violence.  Which is total crap as it was pretty common knowledge.  It was a reaction to the media outcry, as you state.

Not sure if you mean ownership or GM when you say "Old Regime," but Kraft was the owner when it happened, though it was pre-Belichick.

There were always murmurs that Myra Kraft was the reason for the release. There were also murmurs that they let Parcells pick up Peters as a bit of a make-up call for taking Terry Glenn instead of (?) [who the Pats would have drafted instead of Glenn the day before has always been
contested, and the further we get from the event the better Parcell's hindsight is about who we would have taken], but I've never seen a good source on that.

My recollection is that Parcells wanted defensive line help and liked Tony Brackens and Duane Clemons. Clemons was picked #16 and Brackens went early 2nd round so both guys would have been a pretty decent reach.
So the day after the draft McDonough wrote that the pick was going to be Duane Clemons.  A year later Clemons had a shitty first years, Brackens was great, and McDonough writes that it was going to be Jones, Brackens or Clemons. A  couple years later the story became that we would have traded down and picked up Upshaw or Brackens.  Brackens name didn't get linked until after he had a tremendous rookie year.
