I would have gone for the yard because (1) tough place to kick, (2) getting the yard ends the game while a FG only probably does, and (3) the extra 8 yards of field position.

I don't get the certainty that two scores (one a FG) and two scores (both TDs) are wildly different probabilities. I assume someone will break down the math tomorrow, but I'd guess the least likely event is getting the on-sides, not scoring td vs fg if you do.
