Is there any level of suspension that you would advise Tom to accept?

I know you're just speculating, but I'll stake my SOSH reputation that you're off base. Like, way off. That relationship, as it's almost always been, is rock solid.

And personally, I think Bill is just fine with his name being kept out of the press. The less people talk about him, the happier he is.

Getting YOUR response to this post, given your insider track with this team, is great.  I'm glad to read that there's nothing to see here from someone in a position to post with authority on the topic.  Thanks for that.

With the reactions to the perceived slight, 78 hours can't pass fast enough.

TB didn't extend an olive branch to RG with those remarks to the Pittsburgh press -- he gave RG the goddamn Genco olive oil company. If the League wants to be petty, that's fine. The team usually responds very well to slights, real or imagined.

Saving my worrying for performance and injuries. Thankfully, this will be buried in the Second Circuit for a minimum of 9 months.

To me, the most likely explanation is actually not pettiness, it is that they knew the promo would run this week and they were expecting Brady to be suspended at the time.  It would be a little weird to have the promo running with a guy currently suspended for cheating.

Of course, the assumptions embedded there were false...

This strikes me as a far assessment, but it still doesn't explain Carson Palmer's inclusion.  Of the seven QBs on the poster, five have SB rings.  The other two are (one of) the best young QB in the league and a guy who literally quit the game at one point not too long ago.  Even if you throw out the notion that it was petty exclusion of Brady, if it's going to be seven QBs on a poster promoting Super Bowl 50, why not use the seven active QBs (Brady makes 8) who have rings and include Flacco and Eli instead of Luck and Palmer?

It would have been a better troll if the NFL had used Jimmy G in the promo.

Which they did during the preseason before the games.  Which is why all this questioning if it was a troll job or not is ridiculous.  If it was the only incident, yes , the reaction would be somewhat petty, (still warranted, though).   But "you people" dissecting every possible other meaning are pretty naive.  They have been trolling all summer.  I'm sure the delicate genius that came up with the graphic might be able to dig deep down inside and find a way to magically remove Brady , had he been included in the original and the suspension was upheld.

Here
That account trolled Romo after the NFL called his mom, too. Vincent trolled Brady on his account, as well.

Whether the SB50 promo snafu was real or perceived, given the bullshit of the past 7 months, the NFL does not deserve any benefit of the doubt re its intentions towards Pats/Brady.

But later in the column he does make an interesting point, by quoting Jerry Jones:

“I can speak to that because on a personal basis as well as for my franchise and our Dallas Cowboys franchise, we’ve had that happen to us. I’m sitting there living with the result of the commissioner’s decision still today that I didn’t agree with when it happened. And so some of the very people sometimes that have the biggest complaints, they’re the ones who give you a phone call and say, ‘Hey let’s be a team player now and let’s all get in here and realize that this happens to everybody and let’s go on and compete. We’ve got a great league and a great game.’ ”

And that’s a big reason why the Patriots’ team penalties were so harsh — a $1 million fine and the loss of first- and fourth-round draft picks. The Krafts were always at the front of the line telling other owners to accept their punishment for the good of the game. This time, it was the Krafts’ turn to suck it up and take their medicine.

This could be viewed as kind of an admission from Jones that this whole thing was bullshit... but if Kraft supported Jones getting hammered for a "salary cap violation in an uncapped year" than why should JJ oppose Kraft getting a bullshit penalty? Maybe Kraft, like Goodell, has been hoisted on his own petard.

The above comment made me wonder if we were observing a kind of recreation of the Stanford Prison Experiment.  There, a group of perfectly normal Stanford students were arbitrarily assigned to be either "guards" or "prisoners", and the guards were given complete control over discipline, without any oversight to rein them in.  Within a few days, the "guards" turned into drunk-with-power sadists.  As for the "prisoners", the wikipedia page notes "Many of the prisoners passively accepted psychological abuse and, at the request of the guards, readily harassed other prisoners who attempted to prevent it." [emphasis added]

There's also this:
Zimbardo argued that the prisoners had internalized their roles, since some had stated that they would accept "parole" even if it would mean forfeiting their pay, despite the fact that quitting would have achieved the same result without the delay involved in waiting for their parole requests to be granted or denied.[12] Zimbardo argued they had no reason for continued participation in the experiment after having lost all monetary compensation, yet they did, because they had internalized the prisoner identity.

I have to wonder about this seeing the owners accepting not only ridiculous penalties but now even being lied to about getting independent investigations.  At some point, you can only hope it will dawn on them that there's really no reason that they need to put up with this abuse.

Not really relevant to the DFG thread, but the coach in question is Andy Moeller, who was involved in an unspecified "incident" over the weekend.  Moeller has had some past issues with alcohol abuse/DUI, and his father (Gary) lost his job as head coach of Michigan after a drunken outburst in Ann Arbor back in '95.

Sadly, the apple seems to have fallen very close to the tree there...

The NFL will richly deserve the bad press it gets this year each time one of these things happens---"have they spent as much on alcohol education as they did on the failed DFG investigation?"

Those are exactly the questions the media, and the other owners, should be asking RG.

Now that the tide has shifted a bit and the scope of the deflategate investigation has been questioned, it's possible that these type of issues will be raised.

But the timing couldn't be worse ... for the average fan won't give a crap now that they have games and fantasy football to obsess over

A little late on this, but the NFL social media team made their bed with the SMD and PSI tweets. They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Yes. IMO Paul Tagliabue is a very wise man and was a magnificent Commissioner. The owners eased him out because they viewed his last CBA as too player friendly. Which tells you about as much of most of the 32 owners that you need to know.

If they are borderline sociopathic toward the players, why wouldn't they gang up on an owner who has won too much, with Goodell doing the dirty work and taking the beating?

My favorite part of that article. 8 years later and the motto of integrity of the league and game has run its course, nobody is buying it anymore.

"The blindfold that often blurred the vision of commissioner Paul Tagliabue is gone. Tagliabue is a good man, but he also is an attorney and often fretted more over due process than enunciating a can-do policy of punishment against repeat offenders. Also gone, it seems, are any bindings that once tied the hands of the commissioner and limited the scope of his ability to maintain the integrity of the league."

So when does Jonathan show up at the airport sporting a fedora?

And yes, Michael was projecting 1963, Coppola channeling it.

Yes, you are right. Here is Greenberg from August 31st (from Facebook).  As you can see, he effectively takes both sides of the issue but does think the NFL overreached.

Reasonableness.
Especially around the time of major elections, I often feel it is the hardest thing to find. People who behave reasonably, who make reasonable decisions, often feel few and far between.
Reasonableness is my explanation for why I'm rooting for Tom Brady's suspension to be overturned by this judge in New York. Not because I think Brady is fully innocent. My sense is - as Ted Wells said - something probably happened and Brady may have been aware of it. I also think he could have been more cooperative in the investigation and, just generally, could have handled all this better from the beginning.
My problem is the reaction. From the outset, the reaction of the league toward Brady's (unproven) crimes has been completely out of proportion to whatever they may actually have been. Had they fined him a hefty sum and written a stem letter, I think they would have more than made their point. This insistence on accepting the findings of the Wells report - when Wells himself acknowledges he doesn't really know what the heck happened - is ridiculous. As are too many of the other things I have heard come from the league side of this dispute.
Look, I'm a Jet fan. I have been all my life. I don't think I have ever rooted for Tom Brady to win a single game in which he's played. But I'm rooting for him now. I think it would be unreasonable to feel otherwise.

No, I'm not a Trump partisan, though he is as interesting as hell. But he nailed a 7-month story -- really an 8-year story -- in one tweet, almost 4 months ago.

1. They're not going to ask tough questions.
2. Even if they do, he's not going to answer them
