Something in the brain might happen that quickly but have no medical expertise here.Speaking from total ignorance... what kind of cancer can cut down an athletic 17-year-old who I'm assuming had no apparent symptoms as recently as this summer? Holy shit, that's tragic.
Treatment for some forms of cancer requires patients to undergo blood transfusions. This is usually a benign procedure.Speaking from total ignorance... what kind of cancer can cut down an athletic 17-year-old who I'm assuming had no apparent symptoms as recently as this summer? I had Hodgkins Lymphoma when I was 24 and did chemo followed by radiation. The treatment attacks all living cells and while we’ve made progress in treatment it’s all still very barbaric. All kinds of things can happen and stuff can go sideways quickly. If he had Hodkin Lymphoma, the high doses of chemotherapy could have caused damage to his bone marrow, requiring a stem cell treatment, which can have life threatening side effects. Not saying this is likely what he had, but it's an example of how the treatment can kill the patient.
17 is extremely young for pancreatic cancer, to the point I would question the diagnosis, which seems to be based on a tweet. Lymphoma or some other blood-based cancer (like lymphoblastic or myeloid leukemia) would be much more likely and the chemotherapy can wreak havoc on the bone marrow and cause life-threatening complications even without a transplant. Just speculation though, as no other information is being released (appropriately so). Regardless, a tragedy.Pancreatic cancer that young? Jesus.
Sorry to hear that. I worked with a guy who died from pancreatic cancer and it was truly horrifying how quickly it ravaged his body. Such a sad story for a 17 year-old kid to go through this.Yahoo Sports mentioned he had late-stage pancreatic cancer. My father died of that back in 2002. Insidious disease - no real symptoms until its too late. Horrible news and an extraordinary tragedy to hear it cut down a 17 yr old.
I forgot about pancreatoblastomas, which are rare, but more likely in an adolescent. Horrific, horrific news, regardless of the cause.

Really sorry to hear this. Best of luck, 60 is also too young.Just horrific, I can't stop thinking about this kid and his family. I have stage-4 colorectal cancer that has spread to my liver. But I'm sixty, I've had a good run.
RIP Daniel.
I'm so sorry, Conig. I hope your "run" has green great, but 60 years isn't enough. May you have more time left than they tell you, and may that time be good.Just horrific, I can't stop thinking about this kid and his family. Keep fighting the good fight.Thank you all for your kind sentiments. I've endured 60 rounds of chemotherapy with more to come, but I plan on being around to see the Sox win a few more titles.

You've got me beat! I've only had 16 rounds of chemo (currently in remission). Hope your side effects are gentle, and that you continue to do well in treatment.Thank you all for your kind sentiments.
