This is shocking, tragic and unspeakably sad.

Rest in peace, Daniel.

A couple sentiments from the Redsox organization:

“Everyone at the Red Sox was shocked to hear of Daniel’s tragic passing,” said president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski in a statement. “To see the life of young man with so much promise cut short is extremely saddening for all of us. On behalf of the Red Sox organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Daniel’s family.”

Red Sox senior vice president and assistant GM Eddie Romero, who has overseen the team’s international scouting department since 2012, also weighed in:

“Every member of our organization who got to know Daniel absolutely loved him. He was energetic, hard-working, and genuinely selfless, always with a smile on his face. He cared for his teammates and was a natural leader. I’m at a loss for words today. Daniel was an impressive young man with limitless potential, and his life was cut far too short. My condolences go out to Daniel’s mother and sister. Though with us for a short time, Daniel will always be a part of the Red Sox family.”

Speaking from total ignorance... what kind of cancer can cut down an athletic 17-year-old who I'm assuming had no apparent symptoms as recently as this summer? Holy shit, that's tragic.

This is tragic. Anytime a teenager dies it’s tragic, but one on the cusp of something special is devastating. Fuck cancer.

May you rest In peace, Daniel.

Crazy, was just reading today that he might miss part of the 2018 season due to a medical condition. Didn't think anything of it since he was so young.

Just so sad to hear.

Children dying of diseases just seems more tragic. Horrible news. So many questions that hopefully are answered as we learn more about this.

Condolences to the Flores family & Red Sox organization. This is just awful. I can't imagine the thought of having to bury your child.

In the words of Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery on Celebrity Jeopardy, "Suck it cancer. Suck it long, and suck it hard."

Treatment for some forms of cancer requires patients to undergo blood transfusions. This is usually a benign procedure.

But if the person getting transfused is unlucky enough to have an allergic reaction to the blood that’s used, it’s very, very difficult to stop the heart from going into cardiac arrest over and over and over.

I have no idea whatsoever if this is relevant to this poor kid’s case, but for something like that, it really doesn’t matter one bit how old or how strong the person is.

This is terrible news all around. Fuck cancer.

If he had Hodkin Lymphoma, the high doses of chemotherapy could have caused damage to his bone marrow, requiring a stem cell treatment, which can have life threatening side effects. Not saying this is likely what he had, but it's an example of how the treatment can kill the patient.

What a horrible, tragic story. I can't imagine what his loved ones must be going through. It was obviously a few years before we'd know if he was the real deal, but he sure sounded like a player we'd be getting pretty excited about. Fucking cancer.

I had Hodgkins Lymphoma when I was 24 and did chemo followed by radiation. The treatment attacks all living cells and while we’ve made progress in treatment it’s all still very barbaric. All kinds of things can happen and stuff can go sideways quickly.

Life is short. Don’t wait to live it, because none of us are promised anything, no matter our age or status. Fuck cancer with a capital FUCK.

About as sad a story as it gets in the world of professional sports. For Boston, is this the most tragic sports story ever? Len Bias died at 22 and as sad as that was, it was from his own (cocaine) action. Reggie Lewis and Larry Agganis died as Boston athletes but were well into their 20's. Tony C of course was a very sad story but he died years after the beaning.
I'm not minimizing any of those horrible tragedies, but a 17 year old dying of cancer is the worst. RIP Daniel and deepest sympathies to the Flores family

Dying of cancer at 17 for a world-class athlete is maybe not something I thought was possible before today, so so sorry for all affected in any way. I was lucky to quickly beat (so far) colon cancer earlier this year, and I thought I was young at 49, just surreal and so sad, sorry again.

The wrong side of the bridge....
What an awful, awful thing. Of course the loss to baseball fans is hardly even worth mentioning compared to the loss to his family and friends, but everything we'd been hearing about his talent and his makeup was so exciting. It just sucks that he never got the chance to show what he could do with those gifts.

Yahoo Sports mentioned he had late-stage pancreatic cancer. My father died of that back in 2002. Insidious disease - no real symptoms until its too late. Horrible news and an extraordinary tragedy to hear it cut down a 17 yr old.

Pancreatic cancer that young? Jesus.
17 is extremely young for pancreatic cancer, to the point I would question the diagnosis, which seems to be based on a tweet. Lymphoma or some other blood-based cancer (like lymphoblastic or myeloid leukemia) would be much more likely and the chemotherapy can wreak havoc on the bone marrow and cause life-threatening complications even without a transplant. Just speculation though, as no other information is being released (appropriately so). Regardless, a tragedy.

Daniel Flores viajó hace una semana a Boston por fuertes dolores en la zona baja de la espalda. Luego de someterse a exámenes médicos se le diagnosticó cáncer de páncreas en etapa avanzada.

I can't even imagine how horrible this must be for his family, for everyone close to him really, but especially his family. Travels to Boston to get diagnosed for pain he was having and one week later he passed away. So tragic.

That's unreal. So he had no symptoms, or nothing major at least and then he gets the severe back pain and within one week he's dead. Unbelievable.

Sorry to hear that. I worked with a guy who died from pancreatic cancer and it was truly horrifying how quickly it ravaged his body. Such a sad story for a 17 year-old kid to go through this.

I forgot about pancreatoblastomas, which are rare, but more likely in an adolescent. Horrific, horrific news, regardless of the cause.

That’s the exact same scenario for how my aunt died. Had a sore back, went to doctor, pancreatic cancer found, dead within a week. Just devestating beyond words.

according to Flores's trainer, he had testicular cancer that metastasized to his lungs.

I still can't believe this happened.

So Sad for the family. The kid had it all in front of him.

Just horrific, I can't stop thinking about this kid and his family. I have stage-4 colorectal cancer that has spread to my liver. But I'm sixty, I've had a good run.

RIP Daniel.

I'm so sorry, Conig. I hope your "run" has green great, but 60 years isn't enough. May you have more time left than they tell you, and may that time be good.

Agree with the others, 60 is too young.
I lost my dad a couple of years ago at 63 and that was way too young.

I hope your run lasts long and that you are pain free

Thank you all for your kind sentiments. I've endured 60 rounds of chemotherapy with more to come, but I plan on being around to see the Sox win a few more titles.

You've got me beat! I've only had 16 rounds of chemo (currently in remission). Hope your side effects are gentle, and that you continue to do well in treatment.
