5 minutes of stoppage time. Just an absolute farce by the ref. When the Uruguayan goalie went down faking injury, he tapped his watch as if to say "i'm adding this time on", then just ceases giving a fuck moments later.

I’m not Brazil fan, but I really don’t want Uruguay to mug their way through this tournament.

I was really really high on Uruguay after their first few matches but in the end I think they just looked so good because they had the good fortune of drawing crap squads like the USA as the second best in their grouo

Not even the full plus 5 at that.

I think if you’re a Liverpool fan you have to be thrilled with how Darwin looks for his country. The finishing is probably always going to be wasteful. But the indecision and being too sped up in the Prem I thought he showed at times isn’t present here. He’s looked really high class and it looks like if you can get him settled you might get someone who can drive your attack
He is a tremendous physical specimen. He has a combo of size, power, and pace that few others have. He can literally drag defenders behind him. If he ever figures out how to keep it on frame, he’ll score 20+ /season east.

I don’t like going right to pens- feels wrong that the side that’s down to 10 doesn’t have to white knuckle the extra 30

I bet Carlo is happy he’s on vacation right now and not dealing with all this.

And had a ref against the US that didn’t give a shit about offsides or how much they’re a bunch of hacks..

Brazil seemed to have zero attacking talent.. especially compared to Brazil teams of old
They really missed Vini Jr. last night, he’s the kind of player that can make things happen, either bombing down the left side in transition or just taking on his man against a low block. Guys like Raphinha or Rodrygo are certainly talented, and Endrick maybe gets there on day, but Vini Jr. is the star they didn’t have but probably needed.

So on Endrick I looked it up, he had 5 pass attempts, 1 completed. He had 2 attempts 1 completed in 20 minutes vs. Costa Rica, 2 attempted 1 completed in 5 minutes against Colombia, and 0 attempted, 0 completed against Paraguay in 20 minutes.
Sadly nobody has data for the Friendlies.
Better at the club level, but outside of a few spike matches (against what I assume are trash competition) a lot of matches with 4, 5, 6 completed passes.

I think he's not a very good passer and Uruguay isolated him.

This is really the worst Brazil side in memory
QFT. I thought they had some of the worst refs of the tourney (and that's saying something) and that a team like Brazil (skilled, good, wanting to attack) is going to be at a disadvantage by lax reffing, but that's always been true of Copa America and it's never stopped them like this in the past.

I'm not sure Brazil scores if you give them another 90 and give each player an 8-ball of coke
We should at least try and find out!

I think we can expect some heavily slanted reffing tomorrow in Argentina-Canada to ensure Messi makes it to the final. All stakeholders involved want that. I don't think they'll care much about the other finalist, but Colombia is a MUCH more populous country so if eyeballs are the metric look for them to get the benefit. I'll be curious to see if reffing changes much for the next 3 games as they'll have much more coverage than the earlier rounds.

Good thread title BTW!

Usually, Brazil players, especially attackers, excel at reading the game and figuring out a way through a defense. We've talked before here about how kids in Brazil play a lot of futsal and pickup ball in tight spaces, which sharpens those skills.

Endrick looked lost. He never looked like he was going to pick the lock.

That may be more a temperament thing than a skill thing - it's a lot to ask for a kid to take on that responsibility, especially when that yellow shirt is so, so heavy. Expectations for Brazil are always huge, and this team didn't really surround him with talent commensurate.

I think that's also a big jump from Seria A to being the talisman at the Copa, I'm sure there are some that can do that, I guess Neymar in 2011 would count? But that's a big leap for any one in those shoes. I'm not excusing Endrick as he didn't pop off, but that's also a big jump. Hopefully he gets some good seasoning at Real this season and can learn how to play against some of the dark arts at that level.

Losing a player like Vini hurts, and not having Richy also set them back further than they likely care to admit.

But I feel like Martinelli deserved more time on the field. I wonder if Dorival regrets not bringing Gabi Jesus, Cunha, and/or Joao Pedro to the US. Maybe he did and I'm just not up on the Selecao news. Sorry if so.

Canada coming out with the high press against Argentina again. Probably going to end up like last time with their back line and keeper getting hung out to dry, but hey YOLO

One of the darkest days in Argentina’s history, eh? I know they care about fútbol but…
