Bloom hired for an advisory role in the St. Louis Cardinals front office.
For me I think it depends on what the mandate was, and was there enough time given to see if Bloom was progressing towards that mandate. Once you are told to get rid of Betts, clearly you're looking at some form of rebuild. The pro team spent money, can't deny that, but there still seemed to be an ownership emphasis on developing young talent. And if that is the case, I think someone deserves a shot to see if their fidelity to that plan, and the results, prove successful. I'm not sure Bloom really got that shot.I believe the firing was warranted and the reasons valid. It’s my message board opinion that it could have waited until last game plus 1.
The lack of creativity and decisiveness commentary is good for copy. Throwing out incomplete trade information isn’t telling the whole story. Comments about a divide in the FO without details deserves names. Comments like a GM candidate getting out of his office are slams.
I think it’s very clear the timing could have been more favorable to the employee. And not sure how Cora is skating on this…
I’m leaving this island pronto. Can’t wait for Bloom battles to be in the past.
Maybe I’m triggered because I’m in Cleveland for hockey and going to a Guardians game. I’ll represent and thank Francona for everything.
There are plenty of people in every industry that are great analysts and advisors that are just not cut out to be in charge.Vice President of Paralysis by Analysis.
Honestly, this moves astounds me.
Agree, jman. Seems since 2011-2013 or so, (when Pujols left or shortly after, as they still had success winning pennants) they’ve transitioned from a big market team (even though STL isn’t a big media market) to a mid-market team, to me.i love this i am not a big cardinals fan they are the most winey fanbase in the u s a and their ownship hates to stend top of the market $
Just be prepared to wait a while.Bloom is pretty good at minor moves. I wouldn't mind his opinion on who I trade my back up catcher for or Rule V pick.
yeah u are right as well its a shame because it is a beautiful ballpark and they do have loyal fans 1 of my freindls on facebook has went to 5 cardinals games this season and she is 4 and a haif hours away was one of my teachers in schoolAgree, jman. The Bloom signing solidifies this view in my mind.
I’m surprised as to how little the Cubs title in 2016 affected them.
Right, he’s probably at his best as *a* voice but maybe not *the* voice. There are plenty of people in every industry that are great analysts and advisors that are just not cut out to be in charge.

Natural LightBy the time Bloom is finished doing his thing with the team, he will have turned Busch Stadium into Bud Light.
i mean they are never happy and when u try to have a covo or tell some jokes about them they get all defeivence about them when u guys swept them in 04 i was giddyAmen.
Someone else noted this above too so I'm curious where this comes from. When I was in St. Louis in 2005 at a game decked out in Sox gear I was congratulated pregame at the bar and by people in our section about the WS win saying how great the Yankees series was. Everyone seems genuine and it was the most friendly atmosphere I've ever seen at a game. I had friends who were in St Louis FOR the WS the year prior and they shared similar stories even while their team was getting wrecked. Are these first hand accounts?i love this i am not a big cardinals fan they are the most winey fanbase in the u s a and their ownship hates to stend top of the market $
i am 4 and a haif hours away its not 100% of this base but its at least 50'Someone else noted this above too so I'm curious where this comes from. It's strongly an internet thing I suspect. The MLB/Media infrastructure pushing the BEST FANS IN BASEBALL ARE IN ST. LOUIS narrative, with long term sustained success, built up an ego among that fanbase and a disdain among others. I know on the more general sports forums I was on they leaned into this a bit - add in the kind of absurd hero worship St. Louis fans place upon their stars (the Yadier stuff is kind of unhinged) and I think it just built over time - especially as the counter voices (Best Fans in Baseball Twitter was a powerhouse for years on highlighting the absurdity) and it baked itself in.Someone else noted this above too so I'm curious where this comes from. Ironically in my poker game yesterday was a guy from St. Louis who was wearing Cards gear conversing w the dealer who said he's also from St Louis. I know the dealer and he's one of the nicest guys you'll meet and spent the next hour talking baseball w the St Louis guy (and some St Louis Spirits stories because well yeah). I call 100% bs on what I've read above until I meet a St Louis sports person who isn't in the Top 5% of nicest people....I've personally yet to meet one who isn't.It's strongly an internet thing I suspect. I had a co-worker who flew out to St. Louis for the final game of the 2004 World Series. He said the home crowd was very gracious in the loss and went out of their way to help Red Sox fans celebrate the win together.I lived in St Louis for a while. My sense is that they, and the fans, handled 2004 really well, but got bitter as the years went on. I do actually think they were more upset about the 2002 Super Bowl, but that probably compounded in people's minds against Boston sports.
The thing with the Cardinals is that they have basically never been bad. They've been under .500 twice since 2000. Since 1918 they've lost 90 games 4 times, and never lost 100. Even when they've had stretches of 4-5 mediocre years, they are bookended with WS appearances/wins. So there is a smugness to the fandom, and they don't really know what to do when the team is not competing. It is also a bit jarring to be at a game in the heart of downtown in a city that is almost 50% black and see a crowd of white people from the county.
That said, I'll take a city that cares as much about baseball as they do. And I buy into about 85% of the Yadi stuff.
And this was magnified by having Tim Mccarver next to Buck for a while as well.Honestly, I think the bad rap that St Louis fans get is mostly from Joe Buck propping them up as the greatest fans on the face of the planet, and more than once. I think everyone except St Louis watches Buck and feels like he hates their team, for whatever reason. This isn't to say he is bad at his job, and I don't know that it is really a fair assessment, but it is the general sense I get from the way people talk about him.
He definitely airs a bit of "my dad was a lifelong St Louis broadcaster and they are the bee's knees", and with him being so prevalent for so long, I think it wore a lot of people out on the whole idea.
I have liked talking baseball with all of the Cardinals fans I have run across in my travels, for what it is worth.
