Yes it's possible, could be a cartilage tear as well. You could also do it by swinging a golf club. Can you break rib but not an oblique on a swing?

Yep, not really much you can do for it either.Pulling cartilage in your ribs can happen with no impact, and it hurts as much as a broken rib. (I've experienced both)
You’d be looking at a post ASB return best case it it’s is pulled cartilage and possibly a lost season. Weird injuryPulling cartilage in your ribs can happen with no impact, and it hurts as much as a broken rib. (I've experienced both)
Yep. Just try not to move much for a few months, and hope you don't catch a cough or need to sneeze very often.Yep, not really much you can do for it either.
CJ Cron hasn't hooked on anywhere since he was released. At the very least, there's some familiarity there. If it's significant, Brandon Belt is still a free agent
Quoted for experience and truth.Pulling cartilage in your ribs can happen with no impact, and it hurts as much as a broken rib. (I've experienced both)
And hopefully for less than 3 monthsPlease just be sore.
Ditto and ditto. Pulled rib cartilage is debilitating. Just trying to get out of bed is a fucking nightmare.Quoted for experience and truth.
My first thought was why a third catcher who like the other two has no 1B experience? The answer...there's not another position player left on the 40 roster that they can bring up.Red Sox are summoning catcher Tyler Heineman to Pittsburgh for Sunday's game, source confirms.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this 22 games into the season. My first thought was why a third catcher who like the other two has no 1B experience? The answer...there's not another position player left on the 40 roster that they can bring up.
Evan Longoria says hi.If it's significant, Brandon Belt is still a free agent
They need help now. I’d rather trade for some 28 year old in AAA who can play Tuesday rather than wait for Longoria or Belt to ramp up.Evan Longoria says hi.
Yup. Prevents them from playing with a short benchIt could just be as simple as they have a game to go before an off day, so they bring up the available body and then makes the necessary moves Monday
They already had a short bench with Devers not playing. We already saw what can happen last week when the Red Sox played 2 men short and lost in extras. Even if it's just for a day, you need to have a fuller bench.Yup. Prevents them from playing with a short bench
And how do you suppose they do that, without putting someone else on the ILThey already had a short bench with Devers not playing. We already saw what can happen last week when the Red Sox played 2 men short and lost in extras. Even if it's just for a day, you need to have a fuller bench.
I was responding to the poster who wondered why the Red Sox would recall a 3rd string catcher. He's the only position player left on the 40 man roster literally. My suggestion: Put Mata on the 60 day IL and put Devers on either the 15 or 10 Day IL. I'm not sure how long the Red Sox can backdate thr Devers injury but it seems a few more days off might help his knee and shoulder. He hasn't looked right all season. And how do you suppose they do that, without putting someone else on the IL
In the truest of senses, it’s hard to even believe. The entire starting infield (1B, 2B, SS, 3B), a starting OF, and 3/5 starting pitchers injured. And it’s April 20th.I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this 22 games into the season.
It is truly unbelievable
I forget if it was pre or post game, but Cora said that after he had a conversation with Devers and they both felt that with Sunday and the day off on Monday he'll be ready to go on Tuesday. Tuesday is also the day that O'Neill will be eligible to return from the 7 day IL. I'm not sure if he'll be ready or not as the last report I heard a couple of days ago had him still feeling a bit lightheaded.I was responding to the poster who wondered why the Red Sox would recall a 3rd string catcher. Well at least there’s a good excuse available if they have a bad season, right? Silver lining and all that.In the truest of senses, it’s hard to even believe. The entire starting infield (1B, 2B, SS, 3B), a starting OF, and 3/5 starting pitchers injured. And it’s April 20th.
After two years of this bullshit, when does it even out and we have a run of good luck for once??In the truest of senses, it’s hard to even believe. The entire starting infield (1B, 2B, SS, 3B), a starting OF, and 3/5 starting pitchers injured. And it’s April 20th.
2018After two years of this bullshit, when does it even out and we have a run of good luck for once??
When the front office starts spending money on guys who aren't made of glass, of course. /sAfter two years of this bullshit, when does it even out and we have a run of good luck for once??
Yeah this actually is totally crazy when you lay it out like that.In the truest of senses, it’s hard to even believe. The entire starting infield (1B, 2B, SS, 3B), a starting OF, and 3/5 starting pitchers injured. And it’s April 20th.
Is a patient doctor-adjacent?Any doctors or doctor-adjacents out there who want to speculate on rib strain recovery time?
Impossible to even try without more informationAny doctors or doctor-adjacents out there who want to speculate on rib strain recovery time?
That’s a pretty deep cut, but yeah we own him minimum still!Might as well use Eric Hosmer as long as they’re still paying him.
If Casas is down for an extended period then Belt does look good, assuming still trying to competeI checked on BBREF re O’Neill at 1B experience. Nope, not a single game at 1B in the majors or minors. Hell, even Sandoval played there a few games (Giants), even though he split himself in half stretching for a low throw.
Is Brandon Belt retired? He OPSed .859 in 103 games last year for Toronto. That’s Casas territory. I really like Brandon Belt. Terrific Giants player during their big run.
Belt is 36. Ugh about Triston. That’s a pretty deep cut, but yeah we own him minimum still!

I'm sure they can find space for his walker in the clubhouse if he can manage an OPS greater than .184.Belt is 36. Ugh about Triston.
What's crazier is we have a winning record.Yeah this actually is totally crazy when you lay it out like that.
Only because of our unprecedented starting pitching. What's crazier is we have a winning record.
I've had it twice... both due to injuries. Took me six weeks to get back to normal. The good news is that it wasn't a chronic condition and once it healed, it was healed.Any doctors or doctor-adjacents out there who want to speculate on rib strain recovery time?
Or later.Only because of our unprecedented starting pitching.
The dam will burst soon.
It'll be interesting to see what they do. I have to think they still want to compete. They're two games over .500, the pitching has been incredible, they're getting excellent seasons out of O'Neill, Casas, Duran, and Yoshida and young guys like Abreu are coming on. They've been out-of-their-minds bad on defense, and the offense has been slightly worse than expected, I think, and could have been better going forward if they had a Casas-like bat. This team could be in the race for a wild-card spot this year, and from there, who knows what happens. That’s a pretty deep cut, but yeah we own him minimum still!
