I just don’t get what the organizational plan is. They didn’t resign Chara because they wanted to play the young guys, then a third through the season, they decide they’re not tough enough and play a guy off of waivers over a kid they drafted in the first round?
Are we trying to develop these kids or what? They’re not winning shit with this roster, but we knew that going in. Now they’re not even developing the guys they should be. It’s infuriating.
I'd make a distinction with Chara. They didn't choose to not re-sign him. They chose to not guarantee his ice time. He was offered contracts, but with the understanding he may not play every night because they wanted to get a look at the kids and they thought resting him throughout the course of a condensed schedule might be the way to go. I wish Chara was here too, but I can understand their line of thinking as well.
As for Tinordi, I've made my disdain for his use pretty clear. They obviously like him better than Vaakanainen right now, though I disagree. I think Vaakanainen is a better player and if I was in charge he would be playing over Tinordi. It may be part of the reason, but I don't think they picked Tinordi up because of grit. I think he was the first defenseman to hit the waiver wire. At the time they picked him up, they were down Lauzon, Miller and Moore. That's 3 out of their top 10 defenseman out with a 4th a bit of a mystery (Grzelyck was just coming back after battling injuries all year). They needed any healthy body they could get. It has only gotten worse since then. There was a point last week where with Carlo and Tinordi joining the original 3 guys out, they were down to 8 total defenseman on NHL contracts in the entire organization who could play. There was nobody left to call up I don't know what they would've done if COVID struck the defense instead of forwards. I literally think they would've had to go through the emergency process to get Lohrei on the team, that's how vulnerable they were. We seem to be rounding a corner with Lauzon nearing a return and Carlo back on ice, so hopefully the Tinordi experience is ending soon.
