Cover-1 especially.

This being the case then what value does Chung bring?  Harmon is a much better fit next to McCourty in a Cover 2 scheme than Chung who can't cover down field at all.  Chung was one of the worst safeties in the NFL in PHI when he was forced into a coverage role. Virtually all of Chung's value is in his run defense.  Is there a role for a 2 down DB?

Perhaps I am wrong, but I doubt it's ever as binary as all that.
Yes, there are situations that call for man and situations that call for zone. No matter what you run on base downs, on 3rd-and-5 99% of the time you're going to play man-to-man. Corners that can't play man-to-man sooner or later become a problem in any system.

And Browner's skill set wouldn't have a place in a mostly zone defense?  Part of his value is in his toughness, and that translates to any system.
Part, but most of his value is in his press coverage. If you're not asking him to do that most of the time, he's not a $5-$6 MM player.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Chung in a zone-based system. I was really impressed with his man coverage against TEs this year, but he's still not great in zone.

Happy for Brandon, but no idea what the Saints are doing at this point. We'll need to see the details on that contract, but it's easy for forget that Browner will be 31 before the year starts. It's a strange signing for a team that is apparently trying to blow it up.

Maybe they are trying to appease the other cornerback who is grumbling about leaving, but don't see how Browner's signing is supposed to placate him. I'd think his speed/coverage issues are only going to be more magnified on turf.

Big fan of his work - penalties and all.  Browner is a definite loss to the D.  Made WR's wary.  One of the best tone-setters the Pats have had since Harrison's departure.

Agreed.

I wonder if he was threatening to hold out if they picked up the option, or if the Pats agreed in the trade not to pick it up?

$5M doesn't seem crazy for a decent corner, though I know he was benched for a time last year.

Edit: hmm, sounds like it's not that complicated, the Pats just didn't want to pay him about $5M. http://m.espn.go.com/general/blogs/blogpost?blogname=bostonnew-england-patriots&id=4779020

Doesn't the fact that only one of the worst teams is willing to give him 3yr $15m suggest most teams (especially the good ones) don't believe he has much value at that price?

Happy for Browner. Yet another guy who Belichick made a lot of money for.

You might have forgotten to give credit to someone else not on the Patriots who helped out Browner as much if not more than BB did

Sorry, forgot to mention his PED supplier. My bad.

Where'd he get suspended or caught taking PEDs while with Seattle?

Its the guaranteed money that matters not the salary.  Browner just got his payday he needed even if the annual contract is lower than expected.

I see why Browner chose to accept $10M guaranteed over two seasons. I'm surprised the Pats balked at paying $4.5M guaranteed over 1 season. That's what they passed up when they declined the option. But its fair to say his open market value wasn't much higher than the option.

My bad above - the Pats signed Browner last year as a FA and negotiated the option themselves.

Browner was 5.5 for the Pats to keep.
Yeah you're right http://patscap.com/browner.html
(Bottom table on that page is the correct one, I think)
1.9M salary, 2M roster bonus, 1.6 LTBE incentives = 5.5. He also had 0.5M in playing time incentives that could have brought his cash out to $6M this year.

That number is higher than I had thought- letting him go makes more sense now.
