It doesn't seem to me there would be any reason to do it other than to pay him as a MLer.
Is there any other reason? Just the Sox being nice guys?

If he's gonna get TJ and be out for the season, do they now get to use his option for a future season?

If the injury occurred while Workman was on the Major League roster, perhaps they have to reverse the option to protect Workman's contractual rights.

The point is that a team should not be able to option an injured player.  That's what the DL is for.

A player has to be on optional assignment for at least 20 days in order for an option to be "burned".  So I don't think this is an option "saving" move so much as a "he might be headed to the 60-day DL and this is the easiest way to do it without having to actually call him up first" move.

This is what I was thinking too. Can't be good news for Workman.

I went back and forth with Brian MacPherson(ProJo sox beat guy) on twitter and he confirmed this. The injury was determined to have happened in big league camp therefore he needs to go on big league DL.
Said the Union would appeal the case, and maybe they threatened to.

If I remember correctly the Mets this spring training tried to option Caeser Puello to the minors, in the final round of cuts. He complained and said he was injured. The Mets then reversed the option and placed him on the DL.

@Sean_McAdam: RHP Brandon Workman is headed to see Dr. James Andrews for 2nd opinion about right elbow. Thought for now is that surgery not needed.
