Per NESN postgame.

Xander "still showing some symptoms of a mild concussion" per Farrell.

DL stint will be retroactive to this past Saturday (he was hit on Friday), so he'll be eligible to come off on Saturday 8/30.

The contract of Carlos Rivero will be purchased from the PawSox, and he'll take the final 40-man vacancy. He's 26, an 8-year minor leaguer from Venezuela, and spent time in the systems of CLE, PHI and WAS before signing with the Sox last winter. He's split the year between Portland & Pawtucket, playing mostly 3B (50 games), but has seen time at SS (17 G) and LF (23 G). Can also play 1B (10 G last year). From SoxProspects:

Scouting Report: Former shortstop with a strong arm. Above-average defensively at third.  Good bat speed. Has trouble with off-speed stuff.

He's hitting .286/.341/.407/.748 with 14 doubles, 2 triples, 5 HR, 23 BB & 66 K in 302 PA with the PawSox since mid-May.

It's gotten to the point where I can't tell who these guys are without a scorecard.

For those wondering why Rivero over Cecchini (who's been hot): Rivero has positional versatility, and

...rather than interrupt Cecchini's hot stretch to sit in majors, calling up Rivero w/Cecchini in AAA made sense.

Specifically on Cecchini vs Rivero positional versatility: Rivero plays SS in addition to 3B/LF. Cecchini is just 3B/LF.

I think he's been needing a week off for about three months now.

I agree that Bogaerts has looked like his stamina failed him at least a month ago. It's a long long season, and an enforced 7-day break (with no criticism of his play attached or implied) is just what he needs.

Carlos Rivero is the new leader in the clubhouse in the category of "Players from the 2014 team we'll have the hardest time remembering."

This just reiterates what I said before:  Leaving him in for an inning after he got hit in the head was an incredibly stupid move.  He's 21 and the team is out of contention.  What possibly could have been gained by leaving him on the field?

Rookie of the Year situation where he started bashing every slider he saw?

I'm coming off a concussion I sustained last weekend while mountain biking (or falling, rather) and wanted to make two points.

1. Until you've had a concussion you really don't know how frustrating it is. The best way I can describe it is this. You know your mind isn't on point and everything is hazy, yet, simply knowing this doesn't help the short term memory loss, irritability, and headaches/nausea you experience.

2. This brings me to my second point--in no way is a concussion going to "help" Xander at the plate. I don't care if it gives him 7 days off, these injuries are no joke.
