I don’t think him being fired was ever realistic for several reasons (it eliminates potential compensation and probably isn’t a good look for Kraft). This isn’t Arthur Smith. A “mutual parting” ways and is the likeliest ending here, and it could take some time.
1) I don’t read a single thing into nothing being announced today. There have been multiple good reporters saying the Kraft’s would not remove Bill today because of the “Black Monday” optics.

2) Personally I think a “mutual parting” would be horseshit. If Bob and Jonathan want to move on then they should own the decision. Don’t issue some namby-pamby, heavily wordsmithed press release (and accompanying nauseating press conference). Just be a grown up and take the kill shot.

If this was already decided they would have done it this morning with a big statement and thank you to the greatest coach to ever lace them up.
I think if anything at all was decided it would have been announced already. Staying, going, whatever. Especially after all the leaks and media speculation over the last couple of days.

How do you know they haven't met yet? If you were firing him why would you need to meet with him to discuss the future for which he won't be a part of?
Slam-dunk firings are done first thing Monday morning. Belichick is anything but that.

Belichick himself this morning said they would be meeting in the coming days for his usual end of year stuff.
I'm sure Ron Rivera thought he was also meeting with ownership in the next couple days before he got fired. I don't know why it matters? They are not going to wait to meet with BB to fire him, they would have met with him this morning.

Well, if they want to change his job role, I think it would fall under #2, in that likely won’t be able to come to an agreement to continue. If they simply let him go and don’t want him back in any capacity, I agree that they should admit that, although I’m sure if that’s the case it will become clear.

Kraft could be busy trying to find some Happy Endings before making a final call.

I don't buy this, they've had months to meet and they would have prioritized it this morning. This is obviously my opinion and I very well may be wrong, but it doesn't seem like they would delay this for a week.

I'd bet a lot of money that RKK doesn't *want* to fire BB. I'd bet he's hoping for a reason to keep him. He's been public over many, many years in stating that BB is the greatest coach ever and that he's the guy for this team. Obviously things can change, but I bet he hopes that there's a way BB can stay and do a good job. This cannot be an easy call for Kraft.

I don't think there was any way he was going to be unceremoniously dumped on Black Monday. I do think the Pats/Kraft need to say something either way sooner rather than later. If he's staying they need to say it so that he can get on with the offseason, if he's not they need to make sure they get themselves into the market for a new GM/Coach as soon as possible. Hot candidates are going to start interviewing for these open jobs, none of them are going to wait around for the BB/Pats situation to resolve itself.

Then why not put all of the rumors to rest and say he's still the coach and he'll be back for 2024?

Eh. It is unlikely the Patriots get trade compensation, but there is still a chance they could agree to a mutual parting of ways that takes them off the hook for the money they still owe BB. They need to meet first to see if that is possible.

agreed, the Krafts - for better or worse - need to own this decision unless BB wants to move on from the Patriots

that said, an outright firing seems like the least likely scenario to me. Kraft has to know the optics will be terrible for the Krafts if he fires Bill and Mayo/Ben Johnson/etc struggle while Bill succeeds elsewhere. The Krafts are going to spin it in a way that deflects as much as possible from them if it blows up in their face.

Have they ever gone public with coaching discussions? We barely know BBs contract status. I'm sure BB is ok with what's been discussed privately and they don't feel they need to put anything to rest.
There have never been rumors that he might be leaving before, or that he might be fired. If he's coming back why not say it? In fact, don't you think they owe it to him to address all of the rumors? Hell the broadcast of yesterday's game was practically a eulogy.

I for one think it is an incredibly tough call and that is me on the outside looking in without the 20+ year personal/professional relationship that the Krafts have with BB. The most likely explanation is that a decision has not been made yet.

I think they’d probably also give him the courtesy of meeting with him right away. My opinion is that if a straight up firing is happening, it’s either happening today or after weeks or more of a protracted behind the scenes battle to trade him and Kraft realizes he has no leverage and needs to move on. But I don’t see that last scenario as too likely.

Traditionally no but last year they sent out a press release stating they were negotiating to re-sign Mayo and were also opening the interview process for an OC. They did that like Thursday after the final game.

I don't think the Bill thing will linger past another couple of days. At some point if he is gone they need to get their ducks in a row for the interview and hiring process which begins after the divisional round.

I hear ya, but personally I still wouldn’t call that “mutual”. If they say “We had a plan for the future direction of the franchise, and Bill wasn’t onboard with that plan” then he’s being fired. They can call it whatever they want, but it’d be corporate nonsense.

I would call it mutual if Belichick is willing to take less than what he is owed or nothing at all to leave quickly and cleanly.

This “they need to own it” stuff is silly. Of course the Krafts own it if Bill isn’t the coach next year…so what if there’s “mutual decision” language in the press release?

Ron Rivera's status has been sealed for weeks. Just because a press release did not go out today does not mean BB isn't getting replaced.

I mean I don't know, I am just saying what I think is most likely, which is that they haven't met yet and a final decision hasn't been made yet.

You're the one making a definitive statement that if BB hasn't been fired yet it isn't happening. That's of course possible I just think it is more likely that this isn't an easy decision for Kraft and he hasn't made it yet. There is zero reason not to tamp down the rumors if the decision has been made to bring him back.

Edit: I think Bill is at ease because it is who he is. He has six Lombardis as a coach, is widely regarded as the best ever, will probably have options if the Pats fire him, and is under contract for next year likely for some obscene amount of money to add to his pile of millions. What's to be concerned about?

This only would matter if he's retiring. Coach contracts all have offsets.

If he's coaching elsewhere, the Patriots are going to owe him little or nothing anyways.

I would agree that every day that goes by that we don't hear something increases the likelihood of him staying on, but it's still pretty early days.

And I always default to my operating assumption: Nobody knows nothin'.

taking weeks would be disastrous for the Pats. In weeks, the pool of good candidates will have shrunken significantly.

I’m sure the last thing the Krafts want is to fire BB and have to pick through the leftovers not deemed good enough to run the Chargers, Commanders etc

further complicating things would be if Kraft wants to find a GM and give him the power to find a coach, as that would extend the timeline even more

After they've worked together for decades, I find it almost unfathomable that BB and the Krafts haven't been having discussions for a while. Maybe they've come to a decision, maybe not, but I can't believe that the discussions will just be starting this week.

My real concern is that this will drag on a bit and cost us other candidates. The 49ers Assistant GM is one of the biggest names out there for a GM role, and he is taking an interview with Washington. We will hear lots of these coming out in the next week or so, and every day that goes by puts us in a worse position if the plan is to bring in a GM.

There was no way Bill was getting fired today…lots of talk about letting this play out and maybe an announcement later in the week.

Agree, but I think Kraft has always been into optics, and he likely wouldn't want Belichick to lumped into the Black Monday announcements and would instead want him to have the news day to himself ... if, that is, a decision has been made

Well, it's a very weird situation.

If we want to look into BB's words today, Zolak (or maybe it was Fauria) made a good point. BB said he was meeting with players today, presumably for the exit/year end meetings, plus the annual team meeting. Typically, coaches who are getting fired do not do this around the NFL. Ron Rivera isn't doing this today, Arthur Smith isn't doing it today, Josh McDaniels wasn't brought in to say goodbye to the team after getting fired...The fact that Bill is in the building, doing business as usual, is a strange situation if he and everyone else knows he's gone.

They also brought up something else about optics. And that's the big Tom Brady celebration coming up in June. How will BB handle that, if he's coaching another team? Does he cold shoulder Bob and not show up for it?

If they move on from Bill the coach I think they have their two top candidates: Mayo and Vrabel. I also think they are less concerned about the hot, rising GMs. They'll go back to the old well for that too (Quinn, Ziegler, Dimitroff, or just keep Wolf and Groh). The usual incentives to get this done fast are not present here. They may want change but they also links to the dynasty years.

Well, he hasn't been relieved of his duties yet (I can't bring myself to say "fired"), like those other guys, so he's having those meetings, even with the rumors. Vrabel is probably having the same meetings, and his job has been said to be up in the air as well. In short, I'm not reading too much into that.

As for the June celebration, a video message would serve the same purpose.

I'm just not going to put any additional meaning into every little step at this point. It's a unique situation, and Kraft isn't going to handle it the way Jones did with Landry.

This is just nuts. Anyone who thinks that this isn’t just the media inventing a story is insane. Anyone who has paid attention the last 20+ years can rest assured that BB would literally be the last person in the world to publically disclose (or even hint to) anything before data gathering - including talking to Kraft - is just insane. Building on that, he’d also be the last person in the world to lead with a media leak.

perhaps he’s just been playing 4D chess all along.

He doesn’t give a fuck what we think. That’s a complement.

Worth noting you can't do interviews with anyone currently employed with an NFL team until after the Divisional round of the playoffs. So unless the best candiates are all unemployed a small delay won't matter.

My take is the decision isn't made. Kraft and Bill will talk and Bill will have tough questions to answer. I even think a task oriented guy like Bill never even thought of next year seriously since he was trying to win games. I take both guys at there word that Kraft respects Bill enough to listen. I expect many of us have had those discussions at work.

I think this is exactly right, and I think this is always the way it was going to happen. There was never a chance it was going to be a black Monday firing. Whatever one thinks about BB staying, I'm pretty sure no one will argue that an unceremonious thanks for the memories was the way to go.

I think about all the noise in the media, and just shake my head. Not about any individual, but just about what the collective is tasked with doing. I have no doubt at all that sources told them that they expect a parting of the ways, but this is Foxborough. They've been pretty, pretty, pretty good at keeping the thoughts of anyone who really knows anything in house for a long, long time. And because of that, any report about any of this, to me, has always been suspect.

Someone posted this earlier, but they're more than words, It's a huge part what this organization's success has been built on, and is in black and white for all to see in the locker room, as well as what every member of the organization is told from the minute they walk in the door.

When you leave here...
Don’t believe or fuel the hype
Manage expectations
Ignore the noise
Speak for yourself

It's served them well, and while I have no idea where this all ends up (and of course there's probably a lean one way or the other at the moment for Kraft) but I'm as certain as can be that a final decision was not made in-season. It would just be completely out of character for the way this organization has operated throughout its existence.

I just keep reminding myself that there are a lot of people in the sports media in this town (and nationally) that can’t stand Belichick for the way he treats them and their colleagues, and have been waiting a long time for him to be gone. Most of this stuff is probably media member wish casting.

I dunno, at this point, what exactly has changed? All the reporting said they would part ways and that it would take days if not weeks. Until there’s some reporting suggesting he may stick around, I am inclined to think he won’t.
