Farrell should tell Xander that Moncada is going to be taking his spot in the lineup Friday night.
Seriously though... high time to move him down the lineup. He's been struggling beyond terrible for some time which I would look up if I didn't have to get out the door in 2 more seconds.

Hitting .212 with and OPS right at about .600 since August 1st

I'm not sure who you replace him with in the batting order. Hanley?

Since the NL games are now over, I'd go (2nd half triple-slash):

1. Pedroia (.364/.420/.481)
2. Betts (.344/.386/.610)
3. Ortiz (.292/.369/.522)
4. Hanley (.276/.331/.546)
5. Leon (.312/.377/.514)
6. Shaw/Young (.203/.277/.407 or .250/.417/.571)
7. Bogaerts (.256/.312/.394)
8. Holt/Hill (.258/.305/.367 or .202/.276/.270)
9. Bradley (.236/.310/.423)

That would be fine with me, but what Xander really seems to need is a couple days off. He looks visibly exhausted up there.

From last year -
ISO's up to .143 from .101. OBP is up incrementally. Slugging is up significantly. BABIP is down 30 points hence the plummet to .302. BsR is up. K-rate is up only 1.5 points, but I'll take that with the increased power instead of dunks into RF. BB rate is up 3%.

The only thing that is visibly worse than last year, and holding the WAR from improving is his fielding, which really hasn't been an issue anyhow.
I think it's just an extended slump with some bad luck mixed in. It's happened to virtually every player in the lineup this year (Papi came way down for a month+).

Edit: Just realized this was more about recent performance, but I still wouldn't tinker with anything. No one in the lower part of the lineup is really pushing the case that much. I prefer a contact guy in that spot (him over JBJ), and moving Hanley anywhere while he's en fuego is probably not worth messing with.

I don't understand how Shaw is anywhere but 8th or 9th until he strings it together for 10 games. He's had two good games against awful pitching.
Young maybe until Beni is back, but I'd still rather have the extra plate appearance be Xander over anyone 6th or below. He's a tough out, struggle or not.

I think perhaps mentally fatigued as well which often goes hand in hand. With the recent west coast swing I've missed a few games so I'm not sure if it still holds, but in the past couple of weeks he's had some horrible body language at the plate. Shaking his head after at bats and just looking lost at times. I wish I could phrase it better, but I'm guessing some here have noticed and get what I'm saying. Not sure if it's how he's wired or if he seeks out help in a different way, but I would love to see him in the dugout picking the brains of the coaching staff a la Mookie.

That's what I see. Around the ALL Star break I noticed a distinct cut back in pregame activities (fewer players out for early BP) and when I asked about it I was told that players are gassed, they are utilizing the indoor cages more in the heat, working on specific drills and trying to preserve their energy for the game and October! Even Pedroia has cut back.
And YTF, he has always done the head shaking thing...of course we see it more now that he is in such a funk. He is very intelligent and does ask questions of Victor. Nesn hasn't made it a priority to show like they have with Mookie, perhaps on DOB's orders (who as a splay-by-play guy suggested twice that Bogie needed to be moved down!)

They should at least be replacing him with Marrero late in non-close games to give him a few innings off.

I guess you could try Brock Holt for a day or 2 (with Holt playing SS in X's place). Don't love that, but as you suggest, hard to see who else would bat 2nd. But seems worth it to give X at least a short break.

Brock Holt has a .310 OBP since the all star break. He has hit for a bit more power than Xander since August, but has been pretty terrible himself. The obvious choice would be JBJ, but he isn't so obvious because he has been mired in a slump as bad as Xander. If and when Benny comes back, you could try him in the 2 slot. It's really Xander or bust at this point though.

I don't get how a player powers through a slump if he's sitting on the bench. Let's say a guy develops a hole in his swing that becomes common knowledge and pitchers' exploit. He's got to be coached to both anticipate those pitches and close the hole. How does he do that against anyone but major league opponents?

Nope. I believe Bogaerts is a premier major league hitter and you don't give up on him because he's in a slump, unless it's playoff baseball. It doesn't matter where a guy hits in the lineup as long as the pitcher's not on deck. He'll work his way through this.

I do, however, agree with a defensive substitution late in runaway games - just to give him an inning or 2 of defensive rest now and then.

yeah, I don't love Holt there--just don't see who else--as you say JBJ is in a slump of his own. I think it might be worth giving X a day or two off--assuming fatigue is an issue. But I have no way to know if it is--that's something Farrell would of course have to sort out (whether rest might help X).

This is true, but playing while exhausted can lead to bad habits that create slumps in the first place. You definitely want to let him hit his way out of it, but I think you have to give him a chance to recharge his batteries first.

While the sample sizes for Young are slender (just 40 PA over 13 games), I think this analysis masks how good he's been since he's been back by combining his numbers with Shaw's July/August suck.

At least against RHP, I'd prefer Chris Young hitting in the #2 spot for a couple days over BROCKHOLT or JBJ. Young's posted an .864 OPS this year (.913 in the couple of weeks since he's been back from injury) -- which compares favorably to .718 for Holt (.704 since August), or since coming back from injury (compared with .704 for Holt since the start of August, or .850 for Bradley Jr. (but just .665 since August).

[The X OPS benchmark for the season is .80s, but just .589 since August.]

And Young runs well enough too to keep things from getting clogged up in front of Mookie.

The Herald had this article with at the end of June where Xander is openly talking to the press about being exhausted and needing a day - he still didn't get one until a couple days later, and the team almost certainly heard about it before the press did.

Since then, he's hitting .241/.313/.364. I'd give him tonight off, and maybe Saturday, too.
