Hard to imagine much of a tougher situation for a reliever than this, except of course if there were no outs still.

He did not go straight to the plate.  The first thing to touch the plate was his hand...well behind his feet.  On a force, there's no reason to slide like he did except to try and take the catcher's feet out from under him.  The catcher caught the ball, cleared out from the plate, then got tripped.
 
Old school bullshit "play hard" says it's clean.  No way is it in reality.
