The defense is just so awful. I mean, when I watch MLB, I am amazed at how good the players are defensively. catching a fly ball alone is hard. But my general sense is that by the time you get to the majors, you have your 10,000 hours and it is just second nature, drilled in to the point of muscle memory.

The 2023 Red Sox put the lie to all that. They are just fucking terrible. Absolutely incompetent. It’s so not fun to watch. We watch professional sports to see the special look routine, and these guys make the routine feel like an adventure. I can take losing, but watching this little league bullshit is rotten.

Yeah great fun! They unwisely held on to pieces they could have gotten real value for at the trading deadline. Big big mistake.
And devers had the gall to demand the sox trade for reinforcements.
Devers should Look in the mirror and realize that his defensive miscues this entire season are a big reason why the sox are where they currently stand record wise.

and Duvall is pretty much the only player who has shown up offensively this series.
Watching this team with Turner, Duvall, Martin and Jansen is miserable.
Lol. They are little the only players who have shown up for a majority of this season. Totally fine that we kept them.

I just looked at statscrew.com to see how Red Sox milb teams were 'fielding' and found this by looking at Runs and Earned runs allowed:
A: 532 R/430 ER
A+: 652 R/568 ER
AA: 514 R/459 ER
AAA: 654 R/568 ER
BOS: 580 R/527 ER (bb-ref -- none of these includes today's games)

Makes me wonder just how well their milb players are coached in fielding. Obviously, a large percentage of those minor league players won't make the majors but after watching some of the ones the Sox have called up this year and in recent years??? One really should check all the other minor league to to compare team rankings.

If the score keepers were actually calling errors like they have in psst seasons, how many more errors would devers have?

And I hate to say it, but he needs to look in the mirror this offseason and realize that his fielding miscues this season are one of the big reasons the sox are where they stand record wise.

Needs to spend the offseason focusing on nothing but fielding.
Otherwise he is going to be a full time DH before the end of next season

10-10 since the trade deadline. Management needs to held accountable for their completely wrong evaluation of this team as a serious playoff contender. Bloom and Cora need to go.

They did one minor buy. How is that an evaluation of true contender?

I guess you wanted to sell off all the rental pieces? Sounded like that was on the table but I bet they weren't getting much of a return on it.

I love the Red Sox and love baseball. I can usually find a reason to watch and be interested even when they are bad, especially as the season runs down. Playoff race is fun, but not even mandatory for me.

But this defense is just rough. I get pretend mad in game threads, but rarely actually mad. The defense actually makes me real life mad, in a way that other stuff doesn’t. Even bad baserunning or shitty situational play.

I don’t know why. I know they are not trying to make mistakes. But it just hits me in a way that is different and makes me not want to watch. It’s really infuriating. I fucking hate it.

Yup. And standing pat was completely fine. Especially since even the Yankees did not sell. And they had/have a worse record than us.

but again. The big culprit here is the fielding miscues. And it starts with Devers. Who might have been close to breaking the record for most errors by a 3rd baseman in a season if the scorekeepers were calling plays errors like they have done in every other season until this one.

his constant fielding issues not only lead to runs scoring that should not be, but causes extra stress on our pitching staff to throw more pitches than they should.

I said it last week but I can’t imagine it was Bloom pushing to give Raffy that contract given the likelihood that he was a full time DH. I’d be willing to give him another year given he’d made some strides, but yikes.

I think what Bloom could not have accounted for is how absolutely dreadful Masa is in LF. Even more than Devers, he’s a full time DH that you’d like to be able to hide in left field at Fenway.

Down the stretch vs righties on the road, we may need to play Wilyer in LF (or Duran) and Yoshida at DH. Should keep Turner fresher with the heel injury. I don’t see a solution for Devers other than to continue to run him out there.

Also if Cora doesn’t give up by using Llovera they could have tied the game.
DFA him and get BearClaw or Walters up.
They had a chance to DFA Llovera yesterday when Tanner Houck came back, and instead they opted to send down Chris Murphy, who's been an effective and valuable part of the bullpen. They did this because it's quite clear that 2023 is not a priority for this front office, and they'd rather to get further looks at Llovera, who is out of options and would be lost if he was DFAd, than optimize the roster to make the postseason.

Well Murphy couldn’t pitch yesterday so it made sense to get a fresh arm there. I just question not using Houck for another inning. Now that Llovera is done I hope that he is released and we see a long relief arm ASAP

I have been saying this for months. I know the players on the field are key, but judging by how they recover their "acumen" under new coaching (e.g., Tilt), coaching can make a HUGE difference.

I am not being sarcastic when I say that I must have missed this dreadfulness all season. Sure, he hasn't been perfect, but he's made a lot of good plays out there, esp. in larger LFs than Fenway's. I wish someone would post links (preferably not Tweets or whatever they're called now) demonstrating his awfulness.

I don’t buy the defensive stats- JBJ would be given a negative score in Fenway LF.
I don’t think Yoshida is great but I don’t think he’s bad either

Interesting. Maybe get the band back together.
Hitting Coach: Ortiz
Pitching coach: Pedro

kinda sounds like a fucking nightmare honestly.
I would kill to see Pedro as the pitching coach of the Red Sox. I have seen his analysis on MLBN and he is amazing. Not that every good analyst would make a great coach but it looks like he could teach the pitchers a thing or three.
Papi as hitting coach I am not 100% sure. He loves the Sox and they love him, that's for sure though.

I do think that Varitek will be the Sox manager at some point. Maybe sooner rather than later?
