Looks like Chris Hernandez will be first on the hill for the PawSox today. I suspect it'll be a committee outing.

Jamie Callahan gets the start for Greenville.

Drake Britton went 2/3rds of an inning, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits (1 HR) and a walk.

That blows his ERA from 5.89 to 6.75, his WHIP has gone from 1.965 to 2.042, and batters are now hitting .335/.424/.543/.967 against him in 232 PA.

I'm trying to come up with a Red Sox prospect who went from dominance to disaster in a shorter period of time, and all I can think of is Schiraldi. At least with Calvin we know what prompted his demise. I have no earthly idea what Britton's issues are.

Given his brush with the law in FL last spring training, there's one potential explanation that wouldn't surprise me at all.

Britton's best pitching over the last 4 years, ironically, was probably in the bigs where he helped us win a world championship.  So at least there's that.  For a while, I thought he was going to be the hard throwing light's out left handed replacement for Miller if he left (which he has for now)

Mookie with 3 more hits tonight.  There must be one helluva discussion going on with Cherrington and his entourage right now over who is the likely Sox centerfielder of the future!  After JBJ's 4 strikeouts last night and Mookie's outstanding play in AAA including tonight, there might finally be a change in thinking on this. It wouldn't surprise me if JBJ is sent down soon and Mookie promoted to play CF for the rest of the year - and maybe for many more years in the future

At age 25 he's 3.5 years older than the average NYPL player. But this is certainly a quality bounce-back from his last outing (4 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 2 HR, 1 BB, 1 HBP despite 8 Ks).

In 5 starts since coming over from indy ball, he's got a 2.48 ERA over 29 IP with a 33/7 K/BB (4.7) and a .192/.254/.308/.562 line.

I'm really curious to see how he'd fare vs SAL batters, but I doubt a trip to Greenville is in the works for him this season (if any Spinners SP gets promoted, I think it'll be Kevin McAvoy).

Cecchini starting to hit again.

I'd like to hope so, but I'll need a lot more convincing.

Tonight and Saturday (Aug 9) were his first two multi-hit games since July 1.

In 21 games from July 2 through Aug 8 his line was .163/.247/.263/.510 over 89 PA.

The HRs from the end of July and now two good games in the last few days have given me hope that he's through the worst part of it.

Bard was no longer a prospect by the time he melted down.

The point I was trying to make is that it is certainly not unprecedented for a hard-throwing bullpen arm to suddenly "lose it" entirely and never recover.  Not sure why it matters whether said player is a prospect or MLB pitcher.

It only matters because you responded directly to my query, which was: "I'm trying to come up with a Red Sox prospect who went from dominance to disaster in a shorter period of time".

Yes, you're right that it can happen to any player. That wasn't what I was looking for.

Lars Anderson? .317/.417/.517 in 2008 and the #17 prospect per both BBA and BP, .233/.328/.345 in 2009 (and basically stalled out there). Not sure if you were looking for a pitcher specifically though.

In that poster's defense, neither was Calvin Schiraldi.

You're right. I brain-farted and forgot about his '84 & '85 stints with the Mets, focusing instead on his Sox call-up mid-1986 that saw him thrust into the closer's role. My bad, and apologies to jscola85.
