How much longer until the conversation about Betts as the starting CF in Boston really becomes relevant? The all-star break?

Probably around then.  I understand not wanting to rush him with so few AAA at-bats and a new position.  And it's probably tempting to delay his service clock by holding him back for part of next year, as well.  All that said, if he's really this dialed in, I don't want him wasting many more of those beautiful swings in the minors.  6-9 in the lineup is a vortex where offense goes to die.  If he manages to put up a .600 OPS, he's at least got JBJ beat on one side of the ball.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

With Pawtucket trailing by one run and down to its final out and final strike, Mookie Betts delivered a game-winning two-run single against former MLB All-Star Heath Bell to propel the PawSox to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Friday night at PNC Field.

Betts delivered a groundball hit into center with the bases loaded on the 10th pitch of his at-bat against Bell (2-1). Scranton rallied in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs against Drake Britton (1-2), forcing manager Kevin Boles to bring in Tommy Layne.

Layne faced pinch-hitter Carmen Angelini with the game on the line, and Angelini worked the count to 3-2. Layne threw a breaking ball in the dirt on the payoff pitch, but Angelini swung through it to end the game on a strikeout. It was the left-hander’s fourth save of the season, all of them coming in his last five appearances.

The PawSox (38-38) rallied from a 2-0 deficit after five innings to win the opener of the four-game series. Starter Anthony Ranaudo pitched seven strong innings, allowing only two runs on four hits with six strikeouts but left the game with his team trailing, 2-1.

Bell allowed a one-out single in the ninth to Ryan Roberts, but then struck out Christian Vazquez for the second out of the inning. Alex Hassan kept the game alive with an infield hit to third, then Justin Henry worked a walk on a lengthy at-bat to set the stage for Betts game-winning hit.
SEADOGS

Games Story

Hadlock Field fans were treated to a $10,000 home run and another Henry Owens gem Friday night as the Portland Sea Dogs swept a doubleheader, 4-2 and 3-0, against the Altoona Curve before a crowd of 5,750.

Sean Coyle hit a home run in the first game that sailed over the left-field wall and through the hole in the Sullivan Tire sign. That feat meant Coyle and a Sea Dogs fan would split $10,000. Coyle’s two-run homer also was the difference in the game.

In the second game, Owens, the Sea Dogs’ ace and No. 1 Red Sox pitching prospect, pitched a five-hit, complete-game (seven-inning) shutout, striking out eight and walking two. Owens improved to 9-3 with a 1.99 ERA.

“Early, I felt a little too live with my arm,” Owens said. “I feel like I settled in late and had a good three-pitch mix.”

Of his 98 pitches (64 strikes), Owens threw 52 fastballs – around 91 mph – along with 33 change-ups and 13 curves. His change-up remains dominating (12 swings-and-misses, including six of the strikeouts).

Owens had a couple of rough outings in mid to late April but has cruised since. He has allowed two earned runs total in his last seven starts.

“He believes in what he’s doing,” pitching coach Bob Kipper said. “He has stayed with his routine and he’s the one benefiting from it.”

Owens was supported in the field by some diving stops from shortstop Heiker Meneses and a diving grab of a line drive by right fielder Bo Greenwell. Offensively, new first baseman David Chester singled in two runs and outfielder Keury De La Cruz singled in another.
SALEM

Game Story

Jason Coats hit two home runs and drove in three, and Terance Marin struck out 10 Red Sox over seven innings to power the Dash to their second straight victory over the Red Sox 5-1 at BB&T Ballpark.

Coats hit his first home run in the bottom of the first inning and drove in Courtney Hawkins to give the Dash an early 2-0 lead.

Salem got a run back in the third as newcomer Jordan Weems led off with a double and was driven home by a two-out RBI single by Reed Gragnani.

That would be all the offense that Marin would surrender as the Dash right-hander scattered only five hits and one run and struck out 10 Sox batters over seven innings.

Coats would give the Dash an insurance run in the sixth, with his second home run of the night, a solo shot over the left field wall. Courtney Hawkins would triple to lead off the eighth inning and score on a wild pitch by Sox reliever Kyle Martin to make it 4-1. Grant Buckner would then triple home another run to end the scoring.
DRIVE

Game Story

Tim Roberson’s return to Greenville has gone pretty well thus far.

Sent down from Salem Thursday, Roberson pounded Savannah pitching for four doubles and drove in seven runs over three consecutive innings to lead the Drive to a 21-1 victory.

His four doubles came in consecutive at-bats. The first three were two-run, two-run, and three-run hits. In 16 previous games with Greenville, he had eight RBI.

Greenville (35-36, 1-1) collected all 21 runs and 20 hits and benefited from four errors from the third through eighth innings to win going away with an attendance of 6,146 fans at Fluor Field. All 11 Greenville batters had at least one hit and every starter scored at least once.

“We swung the bats really well as a team today,” Roberson said. “To put those runs on the board early helped everybody relax and have fun at the plate. That’s what happened.”

While the offense was humming, starting pitcher Teddy Stankiewicz (6-4) was cruising. He pitched five no-hit innings and only gave up an unearned run and two hits in six innings of work.

“Teddy Stankiewicz again with an outstanding outing,” said Drive manager Darren Fenster. “He’s really taken the next step over the past few starts.”

Savannah (45-22, 1-1) starting pitcher John Gant (7-3) entered the game with the South Atlantic League’s second-best earned run average at 2.12. Despite giving up 11 runs in four innings, his ERA barely moved. Ten of the runs were unearned because of the four errors.

Kevin Mager, who just returned to Greenville with Roberson, reached on errors by Savannah third baseman Jon Leroux in three straight innings to key the Drive outburst. He would eventually score each time, setting the pace for a four-run third and a three-run fourth.
SPINNERS

Game Story

The Lowell Spinners held a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning but the Tri-City ValleyCats fought back to take a 7-6 lead. The Spinners were not to be deterred however, tying the game on a Franklin Guzman home run and winning the game on a single up the middle by Mike Meyers to send the crowd home happy.

The win was the Spinners fourth consecutive win and kept them atop the Stedler Division standings.

It was Jake Drehoff poster giveaway night at LeLacheur Park, but the ValleyCats were unimpressed as Marc Wilk hit a leadoff home run to give Tri-City (5-3) an early 1-0 lead. Drehoff settled down, striking out the last two batters of the inning.

Lowell (4-4) broke through for a run in the bottom half of the third inning. Betts led off the inning with a double and Raymel Flores sacrificed him over to third. Alixon Suarez followed with a single up the middle, scoring Betts to even the score at one.

The Spinners took the lead in the fourth inning and it was Betts again delivering the big hit. After a one-out single by Mike Meyers, Betts hit a towering homerun to left field, his second home run in as many home games at LeLacheur Park to give Lowell a 3-1 lead.

Lowell padded the lead in the fifth inning against ValleyCats reliever Raul Rivera. After back-to-back walks to Bryan Hudson and Mauricio Dubon, an infield single by Andres Torres loaded the bases and a Sam Travis double play brought home Hudson. Ariel Ovando couldn't handle Franklin Guzman's shallow pop-up, allowing Dubon to score to move the Spinners ahead, 5-1.

Tri-City and Lowell would trade runs in the sixth inning, with a sacrifice fly from Dubon bringing home the Spinners run, pushing the score to 6-2.
