Austin Maddox came in for the 9th to close it out, and well, not so much.  He gives up a grand slam to Hunter Dozier before getting anyone out.  Salem goes down 6-3.  Good, not great game for Pat Light, 1 earned in 5IP with 4k.

STORIES

DRIVE

Game Story

NOT THIS TIME: Through strong pitching and defense, the Salem Red Sox had done a fine job all day circumventing trouble, minimizing the damage. But in the decisive ninth inning, one of Kansas City’s best prospects wouldn’t let them wriggle free.

Hunter Dozier connected for a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning, lifting Wilmington to a 6-3 victory over the Sox on Tuesday in front of a matinee crowd of 1,977 at Salem Memorial Ballpark.

HUNTER-GATHERER: Dozier, ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Royals’ system by Baseball America, had been walked twice in his three previous plate appearances. But Salem reliever Austin Maddox had no place to put him after Wilmington loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth.

“I was laying off the offspeed pretty good all day, so I had a feeling that they were going to try to sneak a fastball by me,” said Dozier, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2013 draft out of Stephen F. Austin. “I was just looking for my pitch and they gave it to me, and I made it count.”

The crowd gasped when he sent the first-pitch heater over the wall in left-center, erasing a 3-2 lead the Sox had held since the fifth inning.

BRIGHT LIGHT: Although Dozier’s blast denied him his first Carolina League win, right-hander Pat Light delivered his finest of three outings at Salem. The 2012 supplemental first-round pick allowed just one earned run on four hits over five innings.

Light had entered the game with a 7.71 ERA; he left it 5.65.

“I think it’s big for me to get on top of the baseball, and today I did that,” Light said. “I was able to drive the ball down in the zone and stay on top of that pitch. Because when I get on the side of it — my fastball, my slider, everything — it kind of just flails out there. So it’s nice to be able to get on top of my pitches for once and work the bottom of the strike zone.”
SEADOGS

Game Story

Mickey Pena (2-0) fired five scoreless innings and Portland (19-10) used a three-run third inning to beat the Reading Fightin Phils (14-14), 4-0 on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Portland has won four straight and moves nine games over .500 for the first time this season.

Pena allowed one runner past second base, yielding three hits (two infield singles), two walks and fanned five. The Mission, Texas native earned his second win of the season, and has back-to-back, 5-inning shutout performances against Reading.

Reading starter RHP Severino Gonzalez (3-2) beat the Sea Dogs in his last start on April 30th at Hadlock Field, but took the loss on Tuesday. Gonzalez gave up four runs on six hits over 6 IP.

The Sea Dogs got to Gonzalez in the third inning, sending eight men to the plate, and continuing their two-out magic. Shannon Wilkerson led off the frame with a single and Deven Marrero drew a one-out walk. Travis Shaw knocked in the game's first run with a single off the shortstop's glove, his 22nd RBI. With two outs, Blake Swihart and Henry Ramos delivered back-to-back RBI singles. Portland has scored 50% of their runs this season with two outs.

In the fourth, Betts picked up a hit for the 26th time in 28 games, blooping an RBI single to scoring Derrik Gibson and giving Portland a 4-0 advantage. Betts extended his on-base streak to 58 straight games, dating back to last August 2nd (63 including the playoffs).

Nate Reed, who grew up in Temple, PA, just two miles from FirstEnergy Stadium, fired three scoreless to earn his first Double-A hold. Aaron Kurcz closed out the win, working around leadoff singles in the ninth.

The Sea Dogs notched their third shutout of the season, allowing just six hits, and holding Reading 0-for-5 with runners-in-scoring position.
