STORIES

DRIVE

Game Story

Trailing 5-4 in the sixth inning, the Drive struck for four runs to take the lead for good. Power reliever Miguel Rosario (0-1) fought his control, walking the first three hitters of the inning before being removed. New hurler Will Kendall didn't fool the third and fourth place hitters in the Drive lineup, as Forrestt Allday lined a two-run double to left-center to give the Drive the lead, and Jantzen Witte followed with a single over a drawn-in infield to make the score 7-5. Wendell Rijo then drove home a run on a fielder's choice to tack on another run.

Despite allowing a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Harold Ramirez, Drive reliever John Ely (1-0) picked up the victory.

Rijo drove in a run in the bottom of the first on a fielder's choice to give the Drive a 1-0 lead. The lead was pushed to 3-0 in the third inning when Kendrick Perkins dumped a two-run single to center against Power starter Cody Dickson.

West Virginia bounced back with a trio of runs in the fourth against Teddy Stankiewicz after Chris Diaz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, a wild pitch and an RBI groundout by Justin Maffei.

Jimmy Rider and Allday each doubled in the bottom of the fourth, with Allday's liner to left-center tying the game at three. Rider added an RBI single in the seventh that scored Bo Greenwell, who laced a one-out double.

The Power made Jonathan Aro work for the final three outs in the ninth, as after a JaCoby Jones solo homer with one out, they loaded the bases. Aro rebounded by striking out Diaz looking to end the game and securing his third save of the year.

Allday went 3-3 with three RBI to lead the Drive offense, and Rider collected two hits and scored three times out of the leadoff spot. Perkins and Witte added a pair of hits apiece. Erich Weiss had a three-hit day for West Virginia, while Ramirez, Edwin Espinal and Wyatt Mathisen all chipped in with two hits.
SEADOGS

Game Story

They watched a five-run lead evaporate before staging a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth for a 13-12 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before an announced crowd of 4,262.

Heiker Meneses was the hero. His one-out single to left field scored Carlos Rivero with the winning run.

He planned to celebrate with a call home to Venezuela.

“I want to say to my mom this game was for her,” Meneses said.

Actually, anyone who treated their mothers to a ticket made a good investment Sunday.

The holiday weather was gorgeous – 72 degrees, blue skies and a 14 mph breeze flowing toward right field. And there was plenty of action to be seen while soaking up the sun for 3 hours, 36 minutes. The teams combined for 37 hits, three errors, two wild pitches, a passed ball and a balk. The lead changed hands six times in the middle innings.

Ultimately, it was Portland’s ability to draw walks that won the day. The Sea Dogs worked the count for nine free passes, as opposed to only one for New Hampshire (15-20).

The decisive rally began with Portland’s top of the order drawing three consecutive walks.

Rivero grounded a single into right field to score two runs. Henry Ramos was called safe on an error while executing a sacrifice bunt. A Matt Spring sacrifice fly tied the score and left runners on first and third for Meneses.

“Guys obviously saw the ball well,” Portland Manager Billy McMillon said. “I think the big thing is that no one panicked. Down three in the ninth inning is when you really want guys to have their focus, and we had that today.”

Focus was a problem for Portland’s first two pitchers, however. Mickey Pena couldn’t hold a 5-0 lead and ended up giving up seven runs, six earned, in four innings. He failed to record a strikeout despite entering the game third in the Eastern League with 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

McMillon said Pena paid for not being able to establish a curveball or change-up to complement his fastball.

Mike McCarthy came on to allow five more runs in his two innings. Finally, Jose Valdez and Robby Scott combined for three shutout frames to keep the Sea Dogs close. Scott ran his record to 4-1, thanks to Meneses’ clutch single.
PAWSOX

Game Story

Corey Brown's ninth-inning solo home run snapped a 2-2 tie and propelled the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 3-2 win over the Louisville Bats in a matinee on Mother's Day Sunday at Louisville Slugger Field.

Brown, who also collected an RBI single, drove home two of Pawtucket's three runs as the PawSox (22-16) took their second win in the first three games of the series. Matt Barnes started for Pawtucket and allowed only two runs in seven innings pitched in his longest outing of the season.

Bats closer Jumbo Diaz (1-1), who had allowed only one run in 14.2 innings pitched this season entering Sunday, came in to pitch the ninth with the score tied at 2. Brown clobbered his home run to right field with one out, a no-doubter for his fourth long ball of the season and second in the last four days.

Drake Britton tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to pick up his fourth save in as many opportunities. Rich Hill (1-1) pitched around a two-out single in the eighth to record a scoreless inning and earn his first victory of the season.

Pawtucket scored single runs in the second and fourth innings against Louisville starter Josh Smith. Brown's RBI hit opened the scoring, while Mike McCoy's two-out RBI double made the score 2-0.

Barnes retired the first ten batters he faced, but later allowed two runs with two outs in the fourth. Felix Perez's RBI double plated Ruben Gotay with the first tally, then Thomas Neal dropped a perfect bunt base hit to score Perez from third with the tying run.

Barnes and Smith each lasted seven innings and each allowed two runs. Barnes permitted five hits and issued only one walk, while Smith worked around eight hits and a walk to earn the quality start.

Very encouraging start out of Barnes, particularly the fact that he had only one walk.
