Yeah, I have some that don't work as well, but it's not hard to find ones that do.

I'd bet this one'll fast charge for you, for $7:

That is some awesome SEO work on their part.  Not only do they put every phone model under the sun in their product title, they also weasel in some batteries from popular competing companies in there.

FYI some of the new devices have an even faster charger that will step up from 5V to 9V and then 12V if detected as supported.  The turbo may be one of the devices with this, I think the Nexus 6 may be in that boat also (another Moto device).  Or I could be thinking of the LG G3 as the device.

Really digging it. It's been off the charger since 6:30am and is at 75% battery. I turn my data off when I'm at my desk, but this is solid.

I held it side by side with my Moto X (which I've now returned) and I will say that the X feels a bit better in hand. It's lighter and the dimple on the back is perfect. With that said, I really like the metallic glass finish and like how the "sides" of the phone are grippy. That wasn't the case with the X.

The screen is freaking gorgeous. I don't know how else to put it.

I had both generations of the Moto X before, so I've come to love all the features Motorola packed in here. Just flawless.

I haven't had a chance to use the turbo charger yet. I read online that it could shorten the life of the battery, so I'm going to use a regular charger at night and use the turbo charger when I need a quick refill.

All in all, an awesome phone. I ordered a case for it, but may end up just using it naked. We'll see.

No issues with call volume as mentioned before.

I'm looking to buy a Galaxy Note 4 or Edge in the next couple months. Last time I bought a refurb int'l unlocked S3 because I go to Canada a lot, and sometimes use a pre-paid sim there. I have no-contract T-Mobile service. The no-contract T-Mobile version is $190 cheaper than the int'l unlocked. If I buy the T-Mobile phone and unlock it myself, it should be fine in Canada, right?

Finally snagged a 32 Gb Nexus 6 from the play store.  Supposedly shipping 11/21.
What the... how?

I was waiting on launch day and it went dry within seconds. They put out a notice yesterday that they'd release more inventory on Wednesday's and all I'm getting is the out of inventory message. I check a few times per day.

If it's shipping on 11/21 and the carriers are getting the phones in late November, I don't mind waiting to get it from AT&T. I'm just worried it's going to be AT&T branded and have their bloatware (which seems unreasonable if they want to push timely updates to the Nexus line still).

I subscribed to a Pushbullet notification and got lucky one of the times I clicked.

I'm quite sure it will ship before 11/21; but we'll see.  I'm not in a huge rush (just enough of one where I wanted to be one of the first to have one!)

Sprint debates dropping subsidies in 2015.

...
Sprint, which is owned by Softbank, now seems poised to drop all subsidies from phones as early as next year according to its CEO, Marcelo Claure. While not decided yet, the company is looking to stem itsgrowing financial trouble with more cost-efficient business practices. It’s plausible that beginning next year, customers will be left with the following options: either buy the device outright at true-market prices (a cost that most can not afford less they buy unlocked to begin with), opt for an installment plan, or lease the phone....

Man, what a difference in marketing. It looks/feels like an unhappy desperation move from Sprint, but was one of those "awesome disruption" things from TMo.

IOW: People buy how you sell, Sprint, not what you sell. Judy Greer alone cannot undo all your flaws in PR.

Yes.

An unlocked phone from Sprint has no value, because you can't take it to any other network.  Maybe I can get a subsidzed Nexus 6 from them in December, or I'll just grab a G3.  Or leave Sprint later.

Turbo charger update:

As I noted earlier, Turbo Charger on Droid Turbo 2% -> 100% in 1h 45m (105 minutes). Regular non-turbo charge on 1A port takes 2h 40m (160 minutes). So for a full charge, you'll save about 55 minutes. Not a big deal if you're charging overnight, but if you've gotta charge quickly, the turbo charger will deliver the juice. Or you could go the generic route as Sumner mentioned above. I haven't tried this on my 2A port, which didn't like my S3, but works fine for the Nexus 7.

I'm averaging about 20 hours of legit solid all day use with haptic feedback on high, and the screen on full brightness. I could not be happier with this phone.

You can take it to any of the many MVNOs that are on Sprint's network - Ting, Virgin, Boost, etc.

Yeah, I went to bed with like 65% battery and didn't plug it in.  Woke up in the morning and threw it on the turbo charger while I was getting ready and walked out the door at 100%.

Really don't understand the reviews that express disappointment in the battery.

Virtually every tech review and comments by online assholes go something like this "amazing ______ BUT the ___________ could be better". By the time my 1 year old son gets an iPhone it will probably make him breakfast yet some online asshole will complain that it stirs coffee from right to left instead of from left to right.

This makes no sense. It's not like you need a twitter account or anything, you just go to https://twitter.com/droid_life to see when a deal gets announced. I get not wanting to be on a social media site yourself, but just visiting a web site?
I was making fun of myself.

But isn't the entire point of twitter so that you can get tweets pushed to your account when you follow someone? I would have to keep going back to the website you listed continually, which would be no different than continually checking Google's website. It adds no benefit in this instance.

Your point is valid in most scenarios though.

You can sign up for an account and get pushed tweets (via email/your account/text message/whatever), or you can go read it as a web page without signing up. I've never had a twitter account, but I check some feeds periodically.

This isn't right.  Google decided that the setup where every app can read and write to the whole SD card was a security nightmare, and tightened up security controls--apps can now only read and write to folders that they've created (or been given ownership of).  So app A can't create (or delete) files in a folder owned by app B, and vice-versa.  Those security changes can be turned off via a ROM tweak, but manufacturers are not allowed to do so out of the box--they can (and do) still support external SD cards with the new permissions model.

This definitely caused some problems with apps moving to Kit Kat, as they need to move to the new security model and apps that stored things in other locations often broke (leading some people early on to believe that saving to SD cards was forbidden in Kit Kat).  Most of those have been fixed by now.  And there are non-security benefits to the new model, too (e.g. when you delete an app, it can be fully removed along with all data, instead of leaving random files behind).

http://www.androidcentral.com/kitkat-sdcard-changes?nopaging=1 has some discussion.
One of the updates in Lollipop helps fix a lot of these SD card permissions issues.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/11/04/android-5-0-makes-sd-cards-great-again-extends-api-to-allow-full-directory-access-automatic-mediastore-and-improves-security/

Let's talk batteries. Is training your battery when you've gotten a new cell phone needed anymore? I've got through 4 full discharge/recharge cycles since activating the Droid Turbo on Sunday, and this next one I'm planning to be my last. I've never gone dead - just down to 2% and then a full recharge.

On new phones, everything I read says it's not worth it, and could do damage to the life of the battery if you do it to often. (Not that anybody keeps a smartphone for the length of time it would take to kill it completely.) I read that discharging it once a month to calibrate it is fine, but otherwise staying at 50% or higher is optimal. I don't think it makes a huge difference, and closing apps, turning off GPS etc probably do much more to eek out a little extra juice than any charging regimen.

Played with the Turbo in the store the other day and loved it, but I wanted a bigger screen. The Note Edge comes out soon, but it is being way overpriced (the Edge program was somewhere close to $50 p/month iirc) so I grabbed a Note 4 that'll be here tomorrow. Should be a decent upgrade over my S4 and I know most people hate it, but Touchwiz doesn't bother me, and I can just wait for root and play around with ROMs to find a balance.

I'm just excited to tell T Mobile to fuck off and get back on Verizon's network. Any ideas why the 4gb plan is priced the same as the 10gb on the Edge plan with the discounts applied? Thought that was odd, and since I need 5ish gigs per month I went with the 10gb plan with the intention of adding a line or two in the coming months, but it surprised me. They're also running a promotion for a $150 bill credit per line if you port a number over to Verizon so if anyone is on the fence, that credit wipes out the price difference between them and T Mobile, at least in my case.

According to the Verizon website:

When you purchase a smartphone using Verizon Edge, you'll save up to $25 off the monthly line access, $15 if your plan is 8 GBdata or less.

So that's the sweet spot where if you love Edge (and love paying more money for a device contract versus a service contract!), you'll pay the same for 4 GB as for 10 GB.

Makes some sense. I didn't plan on going with the Edge program, but I typically upgrade at least every year so the service contract would have locked me into the phone for too long. The longest I've owned a phone is fifteen months, before that eleven, and I've done well using Swappa, so I like the flexibility.

AT&T has pre-orders for the Nexus 6 today.

The only options they give me to get the phone is to either pay full price (which is $30 more than buying straight from Google) or going through their Next plan. Looks like I'm going to just try my luck getting it from the Play store. The phone is $250 with 2 year contract, but I'm not eligible until February.

Sprint is not offering it at all with a 2-yr contract - :(

i should have gotten an G3 when they were $99 and an extra battery.   I suspect all of Sprint's subsidies will be gone soon.  I love my unlimted data - Wazing always on long commutes I should figure out how much data I'm using per month and what plans with other carriers would cost.

Excellent. I can't wait to hear what you think of Lollipop. Hopefully Droid Turbo gets upgraded soon, not that that's really an issue for me. I freaking love this thing.

Corsi and Foulkey, did you guys get an email or text from Verizon informing you of the procedures to get your $100 trade in? I haven't yet, and I called them last Thursday to ask about it. I still haven't received anything. They better not renege on this.

okay - here's my data used.  Maybe I don't use that much. Am I right in thinking a 3gb plan is plenty for me?

Yep.  I've never approached 3GB used in a month.  Basically there's a huge divide between folks who constantly stream media and those who don't.

I didn't trade anything in for mine (long story with an old phone returned to Amazon for full price, then returned my Moto X2 within the return window).  Wish I had an old smartphone lying around so I could have taken advantage of it.

It looks like you're not alone in your frustration though: http://forums.androidcentral.com/motorola-droid-turbo/454972-verizon-motorola-droid-turbo-100-rebate-3.html

Some reviews haven't been kind to the Nexus 6. The Ars and Anandtech ones have noted sluggish performance that some people are attributing to the encryption being turned on by default. The problem is devices shipping with Lollipop won't have the option of turning encryption off. Lots more discussion in the Reddit sub if you want to have a read but it'd be something to keep an eye on when you first get the phone.

My S4 actually broke and they let me do the Edge program and use it as a trade in (for full price) so my transaction was a bit different.

As far as what Apisith said, I'm so glad I got the Turbo over the Nexus 6 based on the reviews I'm reading. This hardware is legit.
