MIN is of course the team that lit up Brito two starts ago, so that should be interesting.

I don't second guess NY's decision making much, because they of course have a hundred times the info on their decisions that we do.

But it seems ridiculous to me that this sequence of events was not put in place before today's game, to try to wake up a dead lineup:

1) Call up Jake Bauers who is going nuts in AAA, DFA Willie Calhoun (clearing a 40 man and a 26 man spot).

2) Bader is playing rehab games in AA and they expect him to be ready in maybe 7-10 days. This is presumably why Bauers is not up yet because once he is, he has to stay on the 26 man or be exposed to waivers, but there is a pretty obvious solution to that. Play Bauers all week and if he looks at all like he has figured something out, DFA the remnants of Aaron Hicks. Tonight he was in the lineup for the first time in more than a week, first AB he bunts the first pitch back to Sonny Gray. For a season-plus now, his offensive game has consisted entirely of wiggling and complaining in the batter's box and hope to steal a walk. IKF is a better backup defensive CF even.

It's not too late to do this before tomorrow, Brian. Thanks in advance.

Franchy can go too. Occasional power isn't enough to make up for striking out so much and poor defense.

Yeah, the Franchy balloon has burst.

Just get this to Judge.

He did the same with the Sox. You had fools gold for a couple of weeks and then he regressed to normal.

Funny how these teams are up more than 3 so they try to finish games off with stiffs out of the pen. It rarely works.

Florial is also crushing in AAA, 1.178 OPS. You could DFA Hicks and Franchy and bring up him and Bauers.

Do we have to wait until the deadline to cleanup shop? Hicks and Franchy really gotta go. I don't want Boone to have the ability to put them in front of live pitching.

The team will look a lot different if and when guys start coming back from injury.

Bader bounces Calhoun or Franchy. Probably Calhoun.

Donaldson is interesting. I suspect since IKF looks good in CF that the Yankees will decide to keep Peraza up and Franchy will go away.

The real question to me is what happens when Stanton comes back. It would be great if Peraza still stays and IKF gets time (and looks good) in LF/RF enough that they feel comfortable kicking Hicks to the curb. But given that we don't know how much OF a gimpy Stanton will play, I think Hicks probably survives and Peraza goes down unless there is another move or trade with Gleyber or Donaldson.

I don't think Bauers or Florial will get much of a chance at all. I'd like to see it though.

We’ll see, I think Hicks is near the end of his rope, but Calhoun and Franchy are doing their best to outsuck him and keep him around.

I know IKF has been fine in center and all, but he still isn't hitting. I'm not really sure what the solution is, other than they should have done something in the offseason.

It really seems like they're trying to transition to a whole bunch of kids, some of the infield ones are up but the outfield ones (Dominguez and Jones primarily) are still a bit away. This is not ideal with a loaded pitching staff (second in MLB in ERA even missing Rodon and Severino and Montas and three key relievers), but it makes the most sense for 2024 and beyond. This is why they didn't add a LF this winter (I think), they didn't want to add a long-term commitment and block the kids.

I think a little too much confidence coming into the season that even if Hicks is cooked that they'd be able to patch over any OF depth problems with fringe guys.

That said, Bader coming back, which is soon, will make me feel a lot better about the OF. It sure would be nice if Oswaldo could get his .230 OBP up though. .243 OBP from IKF is bad enough for a super utility guy, but Cabrera needs to hit like a starter.

The youth movement may arrive a bit short in the power department.
Volpe and Peraza hit 40 HRs combined last year in about 900 ABs, they are both still young and should gain strength. Dominguez and Jones and Austin Wells all have plenty of power, it’s just tricky to transition while still competing for a title every year.

The Rays have power. Their youth movement has reached fruition while the Yankees’ next core is a couple years behind. But it’s still April. Donaldson thinks he might be healthy next month.

Three straight games with an error for Volpe. He is almost certainly a better SS defensively than IKF or Gleyber, but you know who is even better and on the roster? Yep, Peraza.

I was thinking same thing. Volpe is leaving the door open to Peraza.

1. Anthony Volpe (R) SS
2. Aaron Judge (R) DH
3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
4. DJ LeMahieu (R) 3B
5. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
6. Willie Calhoun (L) RF
7. Isiah Kiner-Falefa (R) CF
8. Kyle Higashioka (R) C
9. Oswaldo Cabrera (S) LF

Calhoun DHing makes me sad. I miss Matt Carpenter.

Judge DHing twice in three days is mildly interesting. Maybe he's dinged up a little. Or maybe Boone had planned to give him a full day off around this time but the offense is such dogshit right now that a couple of DH days close together is the better alternative. Dunno. Hope he's not hurting.
