Wonder if Tapia was so frustrated he didn't lay off that curveball earlier that he came up determined to adjust and be patient

If this team had let Devers walk the fans would've been entirely within their rights to burn down Fenway

Ump was low-key trash today. Some really crucial and wrong ball/strike calls that impacted the game.

BABIP was also trash.

If Tapia takes the walk in his prior AB , this may be an entirly different outcome. I don't get people beating up Refsnyder. He has done pretty well for a sub. He just shouldn't have to hit that high in the order. Yoshida however is supposed to be a pretty big piece for us but hasn't shown up yet. In 43 AB's hitting .186 with 2 XBH. Not gonna cut it.

The difference between the offense in the last two games compared to the first two was the Angels stopped making errors and committing catcher interference.

Refsnyder batting third with a RHP on the mound is a weird call. So is batting Tapia leadoff. The ideal top of the lineup for this team is Verdugo-Devers-Turner-Yoshida I would guess. Suboptimal construction today I think, and a lack of urgency from Cora in using his bench hitters at the right times. But BABIP bit them and some bad strike calls too.

Tough loss but Crawford kept it from turning into a truly ugly game that would've wrecked their entire week. He's going to lose his roster spot (temporarily) for it but he's raised his profile as a multi-inning swingman going forward. Can't complain with three out of four against a similarly flawed and uneven team, too.

New team, new pitchers, new parks, new country, new language. I think giving him a couple of months to make the adjustment is only fair. This is a 5 year contract.

I'm reminded of Pedroia's crappy start and that adjustment which is probably easier than this one. Obviously not saying Yoshida is Pedroia, just that I don't think it is fair to judge him until maybe mid-May.

Why is Crawford going to lose his spot? And who replaces him if he does?

Can they play tomorrow with one arm down in the bullpen?
They played yesterday down at least two arms (Schreiber and Jansen). The rest of the pen is well rested. I think they can survive staying away from Crawford, at least for tomorrow. Depending on how things go then, they can address shortcomings after that, if they exist.

Given the new rules on options, I imagine they may not send down Crawford, certainly not immediately, and probably not for someone as non-compelling as Bernardino. Could be wrong of course.

I agree. And, were they to send someone down, they can always send Bello back ... but there's no reason to make a roster change

That was an encouraging series. Whitlock’s game stands alone. In the other 3, the starter gave up early runs then the offense and pen went to work, almost pulling out all three.

If we get improvement in SP, I think we’ll have a fun season.

Bummer about Bello. Anything positive to take from it outside of Crawford's 1999 DS Pedro-esque performance?
Bello got 10 swings and misses. Renfroe's HR was just a Bucky F'in Dent special. Some bad D and BABIP luck on some of the grounders. Ump's zone was particularly non-robotic. But he did leave too many hittable pitches over the plate. We shouldn't be accused of pollyanna-ism to expect better next time. He said he didn't make adjustments based on how his pitches were playing, but will in the future: “In the first inning, I had a little bit of trouble commanding my sinker,” Bello said. “When the pitch was in the zone, they made contact. I need to adapt. If I come into the game with a plan and it doesn't work, we need to change it. I wasn't able to do it today, but in the future, if the initial plan doesn’t work, we just need to adjust.”
