It takes some effort to move your knee out AFTER you have jumped straight up and are in the air already. And it does nothing to leverage a pass, so there is not really a reason to swing the leg like that otherwise.

I've played a lot of basketball and jumped a lot. That looked like a natural movement to me, but I guess YMMV.

I agree with you on the initial decision to shoot a 3, but after that they were just taking what the defense was giving them with the paint packed from rebounding attempts.
