They've won one game. Let's get another. That would make two. A 2-0 (1.000) start is a hell of a lot better than a 1-1 (.500) start.

Tonight Nick Pivetta takes the mound, and this dude is a baller. Over his last 24 games in 2023, he had a 3.14 era, striking out 12.5 guys per 9 innings, and allowing an ops of just .597.

He's the right man for the job tonight.

Get it done.

I'm expecting a pitcher's duel tonight. 2-1 type of game. Pivetta will be fired up, has looked really good, and Kirby is just a very good pitcher.

Almost understandable that it's a night game today, but tomorrow's 9:40PM ET start time on a Saturday is a middle finger to the Eastern time zone.

So now we enter the unknown - past Bello the rotation is a giant question mark. The Mariners, on the other hand, run out a guy who made the All-star team.
Is Pivetta the guy who we say in the second half, or is the the guy we saw prior to 2023: an up and down back-end of the rotation guy.

Pivetta feels like just the kind of pitcher who can frustrate for years, and then will have a season where he puts it all together finally, just in time for one big payday. Well, this is the year. He is a FA next year, 31 years old. It's now or never. I say he has an epic season as a starter, where everyone will look back at his second half from last year and realize that it was all right there in front of our eyes.

Might as well start earning that next contract tonight.

The Pivetta takes on this board are absolutely unreal sometimes.

In the AL, by bRef's pitcher WAR, Pivetta was #34 in 2023. If we exclude relievers, he was #28.

He was #30 in 2022. If we exclude relievers, he was #22.

He was #31 in 2021. If we exclude relievers, he was #24.

Out of the 15 AL East Teams 75 starting pitching slots, that puts him firmly not in the "an up and down back-end of the rotation guy" category.

That Pilots hat is great--looks like something the caddy could have worn on board the rich guy's boat in Caddyshack. Did Jim Bouton pitch in that game? I loved Ball Four.

Seattle can't properly assemble an airplane, let alone a baseball team. 2-0 here we go.

My wish for tonight is that the children of Washington and Massachusetts get treated to a contest in which athletes who have reached the pinnacle of their profession inspire hopes and dreams by trying to be the best versions of themselves. I imagine a little girl watching Trevor Story extend to catch a line drive, realizing that she can achieve whatever she wants and getting back to her math so she can invent interstellar travel. I also hope that the players show respect for themselves and their opponents, and the various employees of the clubs, and focus more on process than result, helping elevate the species through the wonder of athletic competition. Last, and most important, I hope the pre-game catering in the Mariners' stadium puts bad ham in their locker room and all the Mariners players come down with dysentery in the second inning and go running off the field with shit running down their legs as the Red Sox point and laugh at what fucking asshole idiots they are, while the ump declares a forfeit, because fuck the Mariners and their stupid fucking fans.

Here
Beautiful day here in Seattle. Roof will be open. Mariners have essentially the same record open or closed. I looked for info on if the roof effects home runs but couldn't find any.

Lets go Sox!

Edit: Have fun Steeplechase. I'm hoping to go tomorrow night.

Starting the season in Korea at 5am, having 10pm start times on the east coast, putting Astros-Yankees only on Apple TV. Great job by MLB marketing the start of a new season /s.
