There's so much of it that's just England doing England stuff, but some of it seems very easily fixable.

A team with two players playing out of position looks disjointed you say? Maybe don’t play two players out of position then.

It looks like Southgate is putting names on a team sheet and then trying to fit them into a formation without any concept of balance or strengths. Kane is caught between being a 9 and a 10 and doing neither. Bellingham, Kane, and Foden are either tripping over each other trying to play in the same space or creating separation that leaves them out of touch. It’s painful. One of those three needs to sit for Watkins to run in behind, otherwise they’ll never break the last line.

I love TAA, but it looks like he’s been given specific instructions to use his long passing and not much else. Instead of keeping the ball moving and shifting the defenders, he’s pausing to see if there’s a hero ball available, allowing the defense to set and removing the threat of switching the point of attack.

I read a take somewhere that Deschamps will balance talent and experience to keep his side cohesive. I don’t know the French team well enough to say if that’s true, but it’s what this England team is lacking. They look like a pickup squad.

Good for Yaremchuk. He was playing for Benfica when the Russian-Ukranian war began. He was open with how much the invasion affected him.

If Belgium beat Romania, all four teams in group E would go into the final game on three points…

The early goal has been great for this match. Poland levels as I type!

Early goals all over the tournmament. It has been insane so far. 17 of 20 games had a first half goal. And two of the three that didn't ended up as absolute bangers anyway (POR/CZE and SLO/SER). The only game that was kind of dull was perhaps the biggest marquee game of the round, Italy v. Spain.

This tournament is just off the hook. Most games with decisive results. Every game with a goal. Multiple points earned from a losing position. It's crazy.

Both teams with half time subs, how often do we see that? Lewa looks like he warmed up in earnest during half time, maybe a super sub appearance for 20 min?

Only thing worse than giving up a penalty and getting the foul with your face and a yellow would be a red.

How many touches did Lewa have? Austria did a beautiful job keeping shape and countering when Poland started to push up. Textbook execution.

There should be some discretion. He was diving for the ball and it didn’t prevent a goal.
I think refs have some discretion whether contact was sufficient or a player has gone down too easily. But by and large, fouls in the box are fouls in the box. They are always penalties, whether or not it deprives a scoring chance. Heck, you see attackers with their back to the goal on the edge of the box get fouled and it's a penalty. The attacker played direct and did not initiate contact and he was fouled in the box. Looks weird because we don't usually see fouls with the face, but I think that's a pretty clear foul.

Second half much slower than the first. Both teams spent a lot of energy. Game for the subs. Taylor really starting to favor the French.

Meh. The call on field was offside. That wasn't a clear error.

I posted above how the games have been so good -- so many goals, decisive games, early goals making the game open up. The two games that have arguably been the slowest and least "exciting" in that way are the Italy v. Spain and France v. Netherlands games. I suppose that makes sense. It's kind of like the early rounds in the NCAA tournament. But when the big boys play it gets a lot more tactical and defensive. Reason to think the group stage will be more exciting than the knockouts I guess.
