Yeah, basically this ^

Trying to read too much into Spring Training stats is silly, but it's better when you players are succeeding than when they are not.

Seems like Valdez and Rafaela are both performing well so far. It’s funny, they are kind of opposites like if Valdez could improve his defense by 10% and Rafaela his plate discipline by 10% (numbers pulled out of thin air) they would both be very hard to keep out of a regular role.

Rooting hard for Rafaela especially, not just because ++ defense all over the diamond is fun, and not just because he’s from one of my favorite islands, but because his limitations make him currently a sort of complicated asset to value.

So many of these posts don't belong in the minor league forum, do they? I missed a whole bunch of stuff that ought to be in the regular ST thread. I wish a mod would move them.
This is JM3's domain, you just have to hang here to get the goods.
The sane forum, some would say. The feeling I get from browsing here versus browsing there, it’s dopamine versus poison.

Pardon me. What is poisonous about the regular ST thread? Anyway, I don't care that much, but the presence of this thread in the minor league forum means that those of us who are primarily interested in the major league team have been missing the good stuff posted here.

Pretty sure they were referring to the general negativity of the Main Board.

I'm not going to get into the politics of it, but I'm going to post this stuff either here or nowhere, as I do not post on the Main Board anymore.

I think it’s pretty self-evident if you spend any amount of time in both places. The spring training thread is still full of good content. But roughly a dozen posters turn every other conversation into a shit fling at ownership or an ad hominem attack. This used to be the place to escape Chicken Little behavior. Since the Mookie trade, much of the main board now reads like a better educated Over the Monster comment section. When you click on any of the minor league threads, it’s all about the excitement and passion for BASEBALL. Night and day.

I was just wondering about Cron on the main board, I think this is the first time we've seen him.

That lineup doesn't exactly make me think he's got an inside track to an MLB spot though.

Probably doesn't say much either way. Most guys probably just taking the day off after the DR trip, & he wasn't in it, so good chance to work him in.

What is the level of batters those pitchers faced? A lot of players with little or no MLB experience get plate appearances in spring training games, especially in the earlier days.
baseball-reference has that info, which they call "OppQual." Garret Whitlock, e.g., has faced a 6.9 OppQual, which they say is AAish.

He also, I would point out, has 11 Ks to 1 BB in 49 batters faced.

Here are some other guys sorted by OppQual this Spring:

Pivetta 8.0 (3.60 ERA)
Campbell 7.7 (0.00 ERA)
Crawford 7.4 (1.13 ERA)
Weissert 7.4 (1.93 ERA)
Houck 7.3 (1.13 ERA)
Slaten 7.3 (0.00 ERA)
Winckowski 7.3 (1.17 ERA)
Criswell 7.2 (3.48 ERA)
Murphy 7.0 (5.14 ERA)
Whitlock 6.9 (4.76 ERA)
Bello 6.6 (3.60 ERA)
Joely 6.4 (0.00 ERA)
Guerrero 5.6 (0.00 ERA)

Here’s the scale:

10: MLB
8: AAA
7: AA
5: High A (California, Carolina)
4: Other full-season A
1.5 to 3: Rookie, short-season
1: Opposing hitter is a pitcher

Rough outtings for Bello (4 runs in 3 innings) & Costanzo (Jason Alexander, 2 runs in 1 inning).

Houck was fairly effective. 3.1 IP, 1 run on a homer, 2 hits allowed, 3 strikeouts. ERA up to 1.59.

Houck faced the 1st batter in the 8th & got him to pop out, then came out. Felix Cepeda allowed a hit & a walk, but picked up a strikeout & got out of the inning unscathed.

& here's the C Note homer:

Red Sox (12-7-1) beat the Yankees 9-4 this afternoon. ️☀

⚾ Nick Pivetta ran into trouble trying to work into the 4th. 3 IP - 4 Hits - 3 ER/R - 3 K - 1 BB.

⚾ Triston Casas hit his first homer of the spring. 1-for-3 with an RBI. 1 BB.

⚾ Enmanuel Valdez smoked his second homer in 4 days. 1-for-2 with an RBI.

⚾ Joely Rodriguez struggled to get out of the jam Pivetta created and gave up a bomb to Gleyber Torres. 2 IP - 4 Hits - 1 ER/R - 1 K - 0 BB.

⚾ Justin Hagenman continues to be excellent this spring. 1 IP - 0 Hits - 0 ER/R - 1 K - 0 BB. Greg Weissert followed with the exact same line.

⚾ Ceddanne Rafaela went 1-for-3 with a double.

⚾ Bobby Dalbec had a 2-for-4 day with a 2-RBI single. Romy Gonzalez also had 2 hits in 2 ABs.

⚾ Tyler McDonough pushed 2 runs across on a double. Dalton Guthrie had an RBI single and pushed another run across on an error.

⚾ Cam Booser worked a scoreless 8th. 1.0 IP - 1 Hit - 0 ER/R - 0 K - 0 BB.

⚾ Ryan Zeferjahn finished things off in the 9th

Pipeline rates us as having the 6th best Spring Breakout roster.

https://www.mlb.com/news/ranking-best-2024-spring-breakout-rosters?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

6. Boston Red Sox

Top 100 prospects (4):
Marcelo Mayer, SS (No. 15); Roman Anthony, OF (No. 24); Kyle Teel, C (No. 40); Ceddanne Rafaela, OF/SS (No. 76)

Total Top 30 prospects: 21

Matchup: vs. Braves; Saturday, March 16, 1:05 p.m. ET/10:05 a.m. PT (MLBN, MLBD, NESN, Red Sox Radio, SXM App, ESPN+)

Boston continues to center its Big Three of Mayer, Anthony and Teel, and fans can expect that farm-system core to take up a lot of the spotlight against Atlanta. Rafaela provides another pleasant Top 100 addition, given his Major League experience, and his center-field defense could give the Breakout series some of its best highlights. While the Red Sox system isn't packed with pitching, the club kept things interesting in that department with top arm Wikelman Gonzalez and offseason acquisitions Richard Fitts and David Sandlin.

Another really positive, quality day for Ceddanne Rafaela at the plate. He continues to control his zone, make hard contact, and swing at strikes. All areas of focus for him. I remain confident this is a true/lasting progression in his offensive development. Many will see 1-3 with a .251 average. I see 3-3 in quality at-bats, and a player gaining more confidence in himself every time he steps up to the plate

Thought Pivetta looked okay today, but had some problems locating. The stuff is real, though. He could be nasty if he can find a season full of consistency.

Yeah, he's a whole different pitcher stuffwise from when I tried to run him out of town before last year for not being good enough at pitching unless he gets better at pitching.

That's probably a big "if", but can hope for the best, either in terms of being a guy to extend...or trade at the deadline.
