I second this. I want to head back to Myrtle just to play that course and then sit on a rocking chair with a cocktail and watch the golfers come up 18!!
Will be doing just that. Having the wife meet me after my round for a sandwich and a beer on the porch.

Have any of you experienced new found length later in your years (I'm 53)? I am not exaggerating when I say I have gained somewhere in the 30-50 yard range on my driver.
My Strealth broke on me a few weeks ago. Went and got fitted with a Callaway Rogue ST Max. The fitter had me try a stiff shaft instead of my normal regular that I had been using forever. Seems I have a high trajectory and spin rate. My drives now when I hit them straight are going 250-260 whereas my previous were in the 225-235 range.
Bombed one 290 last week!

Caledonia is my favorite course. So fun.
This is good to hear. I'm going in August and playing Pawleys Plantation (never played it), TPC Myrtle (played it once 15+ years and loved it), True Blue (never played it) and Caledonia (never played it).

Yeah, getting in the right technology from a good fitter makes a world of difference. I got a significantly more consistent (and therefore longer) when I moved to my current set of Stealth woods after a good fitting session.

I played at CT National in Putnam, CT, a couple of weeks ago. LOVED that course. Shot an 81, which was pretty solid I think, given that it was my first time out there. Played yesterday as well and could only play nine because downed trees closed the back nine (different course, not CT National). Shot a 40 *while missing three two-foot putts*.

The lesson as always: don't be too quick to give me a "gimme", because for me, no such thing truly exists.

I played TPC Myrtle many years ago and it was a delight (IIRC it was shortly after it opened), and we also played True Blue and Caledonia. I think Caledonia has the best classic Myrtle golf vibes and the most unique character but I loved all 3 courses - you're in for a treat.

The Cajun Chicken Club is excellent. Airbrush on draft if you like hazy IPA.

All good courses. Pawley's is tight, gotta keep it in the middle. True Blue is the opposite, with some of the widest fairways I've seen. Excellent line-up of courses, you'll have a blast I'm sure!

Been awhile but I also enjoyed Pawley's especially on the back when you play along the intercoastal. Very quiet and quite a bit of water.

I am really jealous you are playing Caledonia. I know I have said it already but so great.

My wife doesn’t play golf but we went to Pebble on our honeymoon 10 years ago.
For our tenth anniversary this year we had restrictions on our trip due to being away from our 7 and 4 year old during the school year.

we took a quick trip to Pawleys Island and I played Caledonia. She rode in the cart with me while drinking momosas. Being on that property was her favorite part of the trip.

My Uncle has a House in NMB that can house 10-12.... I can maybe arrange for availability (payment would probably minimal if there would be running the lawn mower over the lawn once during the course of the days)

This could maybe be a new thread, but I was chatting with my brother this evening, and we touched on my 2 most memorable golf experiences.

1) In '97, I was in France for a semester, My spring break I did the whole "live on the schedule of the trains" and mapped out a route. Of course, there was a strike that week, so plans had to be "by the seat of the pants variety". In any case, I had a full day in Pau, and discovered that the Golf Course there was the oldest (or first...so maybe not continual?) in Continental Europe. I walked up there and asked if I could rent some clubs and play. I played with a couple of members who were kind enough to only game me out of a few francs.
2) My favorite story... my brother was playing at Pebble (I think) for some corporate outing, and developed a case of the shanks on the range. Like 10 in a row. He called me up and said "OGG, what am I doing wrong?" Now, this was in the early aughts, so no Facetime, and him faxing me photos of his swing would have been really inefficient. So I just said "Loosen your grip". I figured that... after one or two hosel rockets, one bears down and starts gripping tighter/tensing up-- which just accentuates the problem. He said "Ok, one second....Holy S*** that worked" To this day, he says it was the best 911 call he ever made.

Finally broke 70!

After previous bests of 82 and 81 at a local course, I shot a 77 this morning!

37 on the front and 40 on the back.
What a great feeling when everything is working at the same time. Usually its my driver is on but my irons suck or vice versa.

Congratulations!! I remember my first round in the 70s vividly. No birdies, 7 bogeys. 11 pars.

I too had a first this weekend. In an E18, we played the back 9 twice to avoid groups out on the front. We have par 5s as the 10th and 18th holes. I eagled 10 with a 10's putt. I eagled 18 with a 25' putt. And I eagled 10 again with another 10' putt. Then I missed a 20 footer for eagle on 18 again and just had a tap-in birdie. -7 on the 4 par 5s. On the 2nd 9 the group decided to play a 2-man scramble to beat the darkness, but my partner was very drunk and we only used one of his shots and I always hit first (he usually didn't even hit a shot). Birdied another hole on that 9 on my ball and his only used shot was one that was 6' or so closer to the hole than mine, an 18-20 footer, so the likelihood that I would have shot worse than -4 on the back is unlikely, but I guess I'll never know. Had 2 bogies on the front (singles, stroke play) for -2 on the front.

Anyway, I've never made 3 eagles in a round before.

I will be in the Cape for the next few weeks. The weekend of the 26th, I'm trying to get my family to golf together. We have golfed in the Cape quite a bit, but shitty courses. My cousin's boyfriend is apparently a decent golfer and joining us. Does anybody have any recommendations for places to golf on the 26 or 27? I only golf at shitty courses usually.

Where on the Cape? For public courses I don’t mind Falmouth Country Club and Cape Cod Country Club. Falmouth is a little shittier to my eye if you’re looking for shitty courses.

If you’re okay with a 35 minute ferry ride + 10 minute cab go to.Farm Neck on MV. Beautiful course.

Pet peeve- The practice greens to not being close to the same speed as the course greens, I can understand variation throughout the day due to when everything is cut, but if one is like putting on a hardwood floor, and the other is like using a cloth-covered ball through a field of velcro...

Forgot I posted about this. Apparently we are going to quashnet? We usually play in Falmouth and I am sick of those courses. My brother booked a tee time without talking to me.

FYI:

Quashnet is the Wampanoag word for “mosquito”.

Saconnessett (fka Ballymeade) off 151 near 28 was a nice course, not easy. I think it’s private now. I used to snag the discounted twilight tee times after 3 on weekends, which was a great deal.

Not too far from Falmouth are the Plymouth courses, but you potentially have to deal with bridge traffic. I second the Old Barnstable recommendation too.

Bridge traffic is definitely a concern. I'll check out old barnstable since that's not far.

Apparently we don't have a tee time yet. Looks like those tee times should open up in two days.

Brookside in Bourne or Cape Cod CC in Falmouth are by far your two best options. Pizza, wings, and beers at the Trading Post after. Old Barney is solid too as mentioned above as well.

I've played CT National once and really liked it. It's not good enough to go from Eastern MA regularly but if I lived in Southern Central MA or God forbid Connecticut I'd play it a lot.

I was at 59 with 4 holes left pars 4,4,3,4. I parred 15 and the bogeyed 16,17,18.
But it was at 13 when I hit a 4i 205yds over a creek and landed 5 feet behind the green and 2 putted for par that I had the feeling.

Nice. When I first broke 80 (shot a 75), I knew I was having a great day when I went really low on the front. But I was like, all it takes is one catastrophe (which I'm more than capable of) to end it, so I just wanted to keep putting drives in the fairway and aim for the middle of the green and just keep playing solid. But even on the last hole, when I stood at 71, I was like, oh man it would be just like me to lose the tee shot, hit my provisional into the woods, find it, have to chip out, duff an approach shot, and like 3 putt for a 9 to end at 80. It was only when I piped my drive right down broadway that I felt like it was for sure going to happen.

Finally got out yesterday for the first time this year and shot a 79, which I was thrilled with. I used to play 40-50 rounds a year but with kids and life my time on the course has really diminished. My ball striking was much better than I expected and I feel like I could've been at a 76/77 if it wasn't for two bad drives on the back nine. I've spent a lot of time working on more core strength and I really felt that on the course yesterday. I maintained better posture through my swing and definitely saw some distance gains since last summer with all of my clubs. I'm playing Bedford Springs tomorrow with some friends, it's a great old course designed by Donald Ross and it will be a much bigger test than the course I played yesterday. I'm hoping to get out a few more times before school starts but it'll probably still be a pretty limited summer on the links.

Y'all were right about quashnet. I was over ruled due to it being ten minutes closer than old barnstable. I won't go back.

Still beats a day in the office.

I gone a lot in the winter but I've always wondered if the struggle massively in the summer to bring business in... this would seem to confirm that they do indeed.
My brother works at one closer to Boston, and he can pretty much play all day Saturday and Sunday... he maybe gets a group or two in at a time. The difference is if it is known that it will be a washed out weekend.

I had forgotten about this thread.

My ParadigmX shaft cracked and I'm getting another shaft from Calloway pre owned (where I originally got it). the dude said they are sending me the shaft and all I need to do is literally screw it back in. is that really all I need to do? no epoxy or anything? it's that easy?

I'm assuming they're sending the shaft with the adapter already installed on the shaft. You'll just need a torque wrench to remove the old shaft and screw on the new shaft.

They're made to be taken off so you can fiddle with the loft/lie settings. Really the whole point of the adapter (just make sure you remember what you have it set to when you take the old shaft off!).

Anyone in Seattle? I'm out there Sep 26-29 and staying in Belltown/Downtown area. If anyone has a nearby club membership I'm happy to cover greens fee's and post round beers/food and throw in a reciprocal round at my club in Massachusetts if you're ever out this way. Would need to borrow some clubs as I wasn't planning to bring mine.

If public golf, happy to cover drinks and food post round if you'll supply me with a couple clubs :p

I'm about to hit 58 and my distance keeps getting shorter and shorter. And totally losing my 4 & 5 irons. I went to Golf Galaxy yesterday and looking to get hybrid to relace 4 & 5 iron. Mentioned I thought about getting some new irons to replace my Ping G2s that I bought in 2003 . He basically said are you willing to spend a bunch money for a few yards of distance. I agreed with him. But he said bring my 7 iron in and we can compare. I had them out in my my car so I grabbed it. I was hitting my 7 iron about 150. Grabbed the the Ping 430 and with 10 shots I was averaging 173. I think I am going back today to order some new irons.

Be careful comparing newer clubs with older sets. Many newer clubs are strongly lofted. My Mavrik 7 iron is 27 degrees and my old 7 iron was 33 degrees. So yeah I hit the new ones farther because it’s closer to my old 5 iron in loft. Almost all the new irons have reduced loft making them seem magically longer

Totally agree but I don't think I have an iron in my bag right now that I can hit 173. :) I figured I will finish the season with my current irons and decide over the winter.

Wile this is absolutely true, they also launch higher and control spin and off-center hits much better. It doesn't really matter which club you hit 170, so long as it performs more consistently and doesn't give huge gaps at the top or bottom of your set. If you think of more like " I now have a 5 iron that plays like a 7 iron" then I think the benefits are pretty clear. If you're one of the people who can hit a 5 iron 210 yards consistently, there are definitely still sets for you. Basically what I'm saying is, it's true, but so what?

So what? The original poster was quoting distance as a comparison and I made a point about lofts and the problem with using distance as a comparison point. Obviously newer irons launch higher and are better on off center hits but you don't magically gain 30 yards of distance because of those factors amirite?

I think if someone is not too familiar with changes in golf equipment design, and there's a decent chance that's true if they're playing a 20 year old set of irons, pointing out that manufacturers have been juicing lofts is important.

Just look at this:
G2 5i = 27°
G2 6i = 30.5°
G2 7i = 34.3°
G430 7i = 29°
G430 8i = 33°

The Ping G2 irons were also extremely forgiving so I'm a bit skeptical that the G430s are going to be notably easier to play on the course. Now, there is more to it than just pure loft comparisons. In the GI/SGI irons the manufacturers have been fiddling with club length and designing them to launch higher and with lower spin. That launch/spin evolution might help. But if someone is saying they're losing clubhead speed and having trouble right now with GI/SGI irons from 175+ it feels like it's time be considering a move to hybrids or woods for that range.

Golfers and clubs.. it's rarely the club especially if you're already playing GI irons. It's not like the magic smoke eventually leaks out of the club it's just that your swing is probably busted in some way. Go get lessons.

When I was 20 I could hit a 7i 160y and my driver went about 240.
When I was mid-30s I could barely get it to 130y and my driver was going about 200.

I took lessons, fixed some problems and now I hit my 7i about 160 again and my driver is sitting back in that old distance range (or better sometimes).

Bodies age, we get lazy, we play through discomfort or injury and we forget what a proper swing looks like. Over time that all adds up and at some point it helps to have someone look at things and go "Hey, that ain't right.. do this instead."

Right, my so what comment just meant that it doesn't matter about lofts and length and launch and spin. If your old 5 iron goes 170 and new 7 iron goes 170 then what difference does it make what number they stamp on the bottom of it? As I said, as long as it doesn't create too big of a gap at the top or bottom of your bag, the loft of a "5" or a "7" doesn't matter. I used to have a set of clubs that just had the loft stamped on the bottom with no number designation like 3, 4, 5, etc. if you are looking for new clubs and find a set that gets you the distance and dispersion you need for your game, what difference does it make what the lofts are?
