Casas does have the flu. Duran, with his newly acquired blonde locks, is being held back until March 1 to help with his off-season surgery healing. Also Grissom encountered a slight hammy at the Story Camp in Texas, and is expected to start playing March 1.
I don't know if I can wait all the way to March 1 for these guys to get back on the field. I want them available TODAY!

I'm already in love with Rafaela.
STSSS (spring training short sample size) but so far he's looked like he deserves to get an opening day roster spot.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
So if Hamilton had a quasi-passable bat, say OPSing around 90 or so. . .how does he compare defensively to Pablo Reyes as the IF bench player?

Gio's bugaboo last year was giving 41 dingers. A couple of those shots today. The good thing, it is only March 1. He is probably testing his off-speed pitch, like the other starters. Pivetta should get a chance to pitch by next week.

So far the seven pitchers potentially slated as starters - Bello, Houck, Whitlock, Giolito, Winckowski, Pivetta, Crawford - have allowed eight runs in 26.1 innings, good for a 2.74 ERA. Remove Giolito's inherited runners that scored on the grand slam, and it drops to 1.71. Yeah, I know, second week of spring training and all, but the much-maligned rotation has given the naysayers little to complain about.

Don't worry, there's still plenty of time for that to plummet when we start asking them for more than 4 innings.

Heaven forbid someone actually post something positive that isn't immediately countered by doom and gloom. As if had these guys been shelled a bit the panic alarms wouldn't already be sounding. No one's popping champagne corks or anything, but what TPGC posted is at least encouraging despite the small sample size.

The Jays had lost a bunch of spring games, but their B team was holding our mostly A team to just 3 hits. Luckily the reserves bailed us out. Guys like Guthrie and Hickey did some damage in the 8th. Crawford had three really good innings, sharp on his fast ball, and his secondary pitches look good.

I somehow last season never once saw Crawford pitch or even watched highlights. I just saw replays of his 4 K’s and was wondering about his delivery. I don’t know if I can accurately describe it enough to ask questions but he seems to hold the ball close to his head while already leaning in towards home and then really short-arm it quickly but it seems to move incredibly quickly into the catcher…. But also doesn’t seem like an especially fast pitch either. I dunno… it just struck me as a weird windup that shouldn’t generate much speed but really pops somehow.

I've never watched Giolito before. But his delivery also hit me as 'short arming it' with his hands tighter to his body. But he somehow 'uncoils' his mechanics to get some good velo on his pitches.

Yea he short arms it and hides the ball behind his head.

He also hit 97 MPH on his last pitch with 20+ inches of iVB.

He has an elite fastball. As much as Bello gets the love, it wouldn’t shock me at all if Kutter reached a higher ceiling.

Tyler Milliken on Twitter: Kutter Crawford hit 97 on the gun in his start today. He said he added 8-10 lbs and it’s only made him feel stronger. Last year, his 4-seamer averaged 93.6. Houck has apparently seen the biggest velo jump in camp (per Cora). Touched 97 yesterday as well.
Including this here to echo @SouthernBoSox with a little more info. Houck's velo is up, too.

And then there's this extra tidbit from Yahoo Sports:

I also mentioned that the Red Sox and new pitching coach Andrew Bailey had identified mechanical issues they believed were at the heart of Giolito's struggles and had already begun implementing the changes as soon as he signed in Boston.

Well, we saw two very clear results in his first start of spring training. For starters his four-seam velocity sat around 95 mph in his two innings, but he averaged just 93.3 mph on the pitch last year and 92.7 in 2022. Granted, it was only one start, but pitchers tend to INCREASE velocity as spring goes on, so Giolito sitting at 95 mph out of the gate is an interesting development. The last time he average 94 mph or higher on his fastball was a three year stretch from 2019-2021 that saw him pitch to a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 30.7% strikeout rate in 427.2 innings. Giolito also gets solid extension and good induced vertical break (iVB) on his four-seam, so if he now adds velocity and can keep it at the top of the zone, it can be a huge pitch for him since he tends to go as his fastball goes.
That's followed by a discussion of changes to Giolito's slider, as noted by @6-5 Sadler upthread. Though this quote was interesting about what they're actually doing. This was probably the thing they showed him in their pitch meeting that was so eye-opening.

Giolito said after his first spring start that the Red Sox team identified an issue in the offseason and had a plan to modify the pitch as soon as Giolito arrived. "Coming into camp, the whole pitching team, they were showing me some data about it, how it was getting a little bit too slow, a little bit too curveball-ish, so we switched up the grip. About a week ago, I started working on that, and I was pleased with how it was coming out. Still continuing to hone that in, but throwing the slider in like the mid-to-high 80s I think is a better move for me.”
So, early returns seem good for the new pitching program?

I seem to recall a reliever we had hereabouts in the aughts, pitched a consequential inning or so. Stabbed a memorable comebacker to end one particular year rather well.

Just getting back from a great weekend in Ft. Myers.

Game notes:

- I was telling my friends during Sunday's game that the offseason had been a little rough and the mood going into Breslow's first season would be not great if they didn't sign Montgomery... only to have none other than Craig Breslow come to sit in front of me 5 minutes later... next to his parents, who it turned out had been sitting in front of me while I explained this. (I greeted him warmly and wished him luck this season, and he was polite. His parents didn't give me the stink eye that I noticed.)

- Spotted Theo chatting with some of the Sox staff who were watching behind home plate on Sunday, for what that's worth?

- Saturday it felt like Bello was working through some things. Obviously I have no idea whether he was practicing certain pitches or working on other things, but it looked to me like he didn't have great control, missing his spots at times.

- Crawford really looked good Sunday. Not qualified to scout the pitches or mechanics, but as a former HS catcher to me he just looked confident, if that makes sense? Never really shook his head in frustration after a pitch, seemed to be dealing easily, almost always seemed to pop the mitt exactly where the catcher set up.

- O'Neill really is massive. Haven't seen anyone with his body type on the Sox since... Gabe Kapler?

- Devers just looks so comfortable in the field, making a lot of nifty plays with ease. I was impressed.

- Watched some drills this AM on the back fields, mostly minor leaguers I didn't recognize, but did see Fitts who fortunately upgraded from baseball's worst organization to its best this offseason. Binelas was peppering home runs to CF off a pitching machine.

Ft. Myers notes:

- The JetBlue park tours by the guides remain a wonderful way to spend $10. Love wandering behind home plate and standing next to the Monster (which was in Fenway ~1976-2002).

- Traffic in the area feels like it's getting worse. We were staying in Cape Coral and it took 45+ minutes unless we did the drive at 9pm or later.

- Saturday night we went to what turned out to be one of the absolutely most delicious, most impressive Korean BBQ restaurants I've ever been to. The service is some of the best I've ever seen outside of Michelin starred meals (literally within seconds of a fork hitting the floor someone appeared to replace it, and water glasses couldn't stay empty for more than 30 seconds). Place was PACKED on a Saturday night, and the amount of steak we ate was deeply problematic -- we got the Feast C with prime ribeye, wagyu zabuton, marinated galbi, brisket, and pork belly. It was even better than that sounds. https://www.emberfortmyers.com/menu

This was awesome. Mike F would be proud. :)

Speaking of Mike F, your story reminded me of being at Hammond Stadium with him for a game with the twins about 20 years ago, and a guy stood in front of us in the aisle, blocking our view for a minute. The guy was right in front of Mike, maybe 20 feet away, and he screamed out "down in front!", and the guy looked around, and immediately tried to move out of the way.

That guy? Theo Epstein. :)

Man I miss Mike.

Shades of 2013 JBJ.

2013 Spring training: 74 PA, .419/.507/.613/1.120
2013 Regular season: 107 PA, .198/.265/.266/.531

Fun to watch but not necessarily suggestive that he's reached a new plateau yet.

Today's spring training lineup could very well be what we see on opening day, barring injuries and/or surprises:

Duran CF
Devers 3B
Story SS
Casas 1B
Yoshida DH
O'Neill LF
Abreu RF
Wong C
Valdez 2B

While this is absolutely true, I remain mildly optimistic.

Rafaela tends to go out and get pitches, and so his issue was always can he show discipline and draw walks? That seems to be more of an internal/approach thing, rather than, say, "Does he have a hole in his swing that's going to get rigorously exploited in ML games?" He may or may not, but showing an ability to suppress the hacking and draw walks is a little bit different than simply hitting the snot out of the ball in ST.

Also, he's batting high in the order on the travel squad. For his first AB (if not the second) he's facing experienced MLB starters looking to stretch out during ST. And even though it's ST, most of those guys aren't looking to get shelled or walk guys.

So I'd be curious to see a breakdown (SSS, yes) of his first ABs, or his ABs against established ML pitchers. Maybe at the end of spring training it might show something interesting.

Thanks @dynomite for a great post. It reminded me of some of my past ST experiences at the Fort as well as other Grapefruit league parks:

* catching a ball off the bat of Rusney Castillo in batting practice at Hammond Stadium
* sitting a couple rows behind Dave Dombrowski and Frank Wren at JetBlue, trying really hard to eavesdrop on their conversation ;)
* watching John Henry sign autographs for fans down in LF corner from about 3 feet away before a game (at least 5 yrs ago when he still spoke)
* having Jared Saltamachia sign for my gf's daughters right before boarding bus after Pirates/Sox game in Bradenton (and saying Lester is waiting on bus)
* Sitting near Jenny Dell in Port Charlotte at a Rays/Sox game and sheepishly asking her for a picture. She obliged and couldn't have been nicer. :)
* seeing Tim Tebow get a base hit against Sox in Port St. Lucie and then immediately getting picked off 1st by a mile. (wish i could remember the pitcher)
* sitting next to some moron when Raffy Devers was still a minor leaguer and struck out chasing. He said the guy was junk and watch out for Sam Travis, he's the real deal.
* randomly running into a buddy from New England who'd recently moved to DelRay Beach at a game in Jupiter against Cardinals. We continued to meet up to catch the Sox at City of Palms in WPB for the next several years.

These are the types of threads that make SOSH truly enjoyable. Get down to Florida and check out games in the future if you're fortunate enough to do so. Thanks again for the posts everyone!

One of my favorite spring training stories is from about 35 or 40 years ago when I went to a Sox/Twins game with a friend. Before the game we were standing along the railing next to the field and Kent Hrbek was nearby. My friend was calling to him for an autograph and Hrbek was ignoring him. Finally my friend yelled "come on Kent, I have you on my fantasy team." This time Hrbek answered - "Who f.. ing cares. "

some of the bats are getting in the groove today against Rays. O'Neill with a homer and another hit. Valdez has 3 hits, incl a couple extra base balls. Yoshida and Story coming around. And that Devers guy, what can I say.

That Sam Travis quote could have been me (not the Devers part). I was really high on him and thought he could be a Mark Grace caliber player. Basically what I'm saying is that I don't know what I'm talking about and my posts should be treated as such.

The radio guys were freaking out about the toe. Apparently not.
Jarren Duran exited Tuesday’s game with left ankle tightness. During an at-bat, Duran was seen wiggling his ankle in an effort to loosen it up. The initial thought was that Duran aggravated his surgically repaired big toe, which cost him the final month of last season. Cora said Duran is expected to play Thursday …

Cooper Criswell got the start today vs. Twins. Did OK for two innings, then they got to him for a 3-run homer in the 3rd, so he went 2.2 before he was pulled. NESN, from some source thought Sox would try him as a starter in the mix for however many will try their hand for the top 6(?) in the rotation.

I am pulling for the kid, as he pitched for my alma mater in college a couple years ago.

He does have a lot of muscles.

And it probably is time for caution.

I'm just frustrated, I guess. This team is SO thin, that I get jittery every time I hear about anyone being sidelined - and I still have PTSD from all of the "Pats o-line will be fine as soon as their healthy" chatter from their last pre-season.

The O'Neill and Story issues are just typical spring training day-to-day no-big-deal stuff, right?

Very likely. we are now about halfway thru ST and the 2nd half is basically for pitchers to get stretched out. Most veteran position players are ready to go, so an occasional day off their feet and having a younger guy get some at bats is usually no big deal.

Man... I'm 52 years old and play tennis full fucking blast 4 days a week for two hours. I know I know I know it's not the same damn thing but I can't help but feel like these guys are super fragile. Again... I know it's not the same thing but they're all pretty young and in supposed peak health. It's just frustrating to hear/read about every little small injury sidelining these guys. And I'm VERY far from a "just play through it/suck it up!!!" tough guy type.

Especially for guys who are returning, or not far off of returning, from previous injuries. JFC, guys. They literally said Story will be back this weekend.
