@JM3 giving Matthew Lugo the helium he deserves! Waiting for SP to catch up.
For better or worse, my rankings are definitely a lot more fluid than SP. I had him ranked lower than they did all of last year because he was terrible at baseball last year.

But the fact that he's been really good at baseball this year probably makes that a bad idea, even though SP eventually joined me in removing him from the top 60, so I was way ahead of that curve... but that curve (hopefully) was wrong.

While we're chatting in here, this seems like a good place for this post:

Ian also mentions that Mayer is 2nd among org 21 y/o at 106.1.

& this is also a good time to mention that Roman is still live to be #1 again next month lol

Is that good? It sounds good. I mean, what’s Stanton or Ohtani?

So what's the deal with Anthony currently? Just striking out to much?
Umm...as far as I can tell (based solely on looking at his Fangraphs page) compared to Greenville (his main sample) last year... the only major difference is he's not hitting enough homers...

Last year he hit homers on 37.5% of fly balls. This year he's hit homers on 9.5% of fly balls.

His strikeout rate is pretty similar (30.6% last year, 31.6% this year), his walk rate is pretty similar (16.3% to 14.9%), & his line drive rate is pretty similar (29.5% to 27.1%).

He's converted more ground balls to fly balls this year (about 10%), & is pulling the ball 10% less of the time. It's quite possible this is a change in approach that he hasn't fully mastered, yet, or he isn't quite at the level of comfortability with the pitching at the level as he was by the time he got to Greenville 202 PAs into the season.

In general, I think he does need to get better at not striking out, & I think he will over time, but that's not the reason his wRC+ went from 164 at Greenville to 115 at Portland this season, which is still quite good for a 19 y/o in AA (his 20th birthday is on the 13th).

But I think we could expect to start seeing more homers & xbh soon (his ISO is down from .275 to .144), & maybe eventually the k rate will go down a bit, too.

This is for fantasy baseball so you get weird stuff like David Hamilton #175, but a list that goes 700 deep is fun.

With Casas likely the long-term solution at 1B and our roster with a handful of guys who should / could be DHing what do you see happening to Blaze?

I've always sort of envisioned him for that Justin Turner role of RHH DH who can back up 1B & 3B.

Two of the guys who could be DH'ing play the positions Blaze plays, so if he plays it better than them & they DH those days, that wouldn't really change the math.

Which leaves the Yoshida issue. If he is better against righties than Yoshida in 2 years, you move on from Yoshida no problem. Obviously, how well they are both playing at that point would determine how high-class of a problem that is.

If he's good against lefties but not great against righties, you have basically a CI Refsnyder type role.

& if he's not good at anything, hopefully you move him before he Dalbecs.

Here is some formula that is obviously accurate as it has Jackson Holliday as the best hitter & Paul Skenes as the best pitcher.

I mean, anytime you have a list that's 100% model based you're going to get some unusual results, especially when you're talking about 20% of the season.

Cool to have so many guys on those lists regardless.

I'm starting to think that Wikelman has to drop in rankings a bit. BB rate is up, K rate is down. He's not missing a lot of bats. There is no progress.

Probably. The people behind him either already jumped a lot or are lacking momentum, & he was also bad early last season so it's a lot muddled after the top 6.

I'm still holding a ritual that he learns how to throw strikes. If he does, he jumps right back up the list. He's still young. Seems like a perfect guy for some 1:1 stuff with Pedro.

My initial thought is I like a lot of what they've done here.

PORTES at 29 seems aggressive, but I'm here for it.

Late night rankings drop. Still needs a lot of sharpening, but I've already wasted way too much time on this tonight:

FG's list is out, 47 prospects given at least a 35+ FV,
They point out reason for concern with Nazzan:

“…Zanetello looks so far from being any sort of viable pro baseball player that I feel compelled to push the panic button here. He seems like a low-probability prospect whose hit tool fallibility was exposed in a profound way by pro-quality stuff.”

That seems like a bit of a premature take on a 19 y/o kid based on a slow start to the season.

Over his last 8 games, Nazzan is slashing .333/.429/.567 (.995 OPS)...

...of course he has 5 bb & 12 k in 35 PAs with a .529 BABIP during that stretch...& I'm definitely not as into him as SP is as I didn't like the hitch in his swing, but it seems too early to write him off.

ERC getting some love. I’ve been intrigued by him ever since they drafted him in, I think, the second round. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen him listed as our top pitching prospect.

The Fangraphs article was interesting. I enjoy reading Eric Longenhagen. He has good insights and it not afraid to disagree with consensus opinion. I enjoy how he considers the organizational strategy and trends of each team. A interesting points that I took away from the piece:

- Roman Anthony and his plate discipline being artificially inflated due to "planned" takes and a low swing percentage on "cookie" down the middle pitches
- Miguel Bleis and his lapses of focus
- Kristian Campbell might be a dude. Making a lot of loud contact to all fields. Another speedy OF that can also drive the ball.

This is so well said. His huge, huge value add is that he doesn't "herd" with the other evaluators, which might partly be that he has different scouting sources, etc.

So it's really helpful to see another perspective on issues that are more about judgment. For example, he takes Cespedes' positional risk more seriously than e.g. the Sox Prospects guys. And in this instance, I think he's right! If Cespedes isn't actually an infielder, then he's really not a top-10 prospect in a system this deep — until he shows that he can hit like he's been doing against advanced pitching. (This is to paraphrase what Longenhagen says in his writeup.) So it's not that Longenhagen doesn't see what Cespedes is doing with the bat, it's that he wants to hold off the hype until we've seen him in the upper minors — all in due time. If he keeps it up in AA, well, we desperately need RHH power.

With the acknowledgment that this guy’s hand speed is pretty nutty and he can really bang, this scouting report also aims to caution folks against taking Cespedes’ rookie ball performance at face value. He is very physically mature relative to other 18- and 19-year-old hitters; one might argue he’s already become concerningly large for this stage of his career. Obviously he’s so young that Cespedes and Boston’s strength and conditioning program could make significant changes in this area, but his frame is maxed out right now and it impacts his mobility on defense enough that there’s a chance he won’t stick on the infield at all if he gets bigger the way people tend to as they age. It’s reminiscent of Willie Calhoun at the same age.
[...]
At some point there will probably have to be an adjustment [to be more patient] on Cespedes’ part, especially if he ends up being a below-average defensive player and needs every drop of offensive production he can muster to root himself on a major league roster. Because defensive versatility probably won’t be a thing here, Cespedes’ outcomes are binary: Either he keeps hitting enough to be an everyday second baseman (becoming a better defender as he climbs) or he’ll be tough to roster.
If he's not a 2B, he might be a LF/DH — and then he really needs to crush the ball to be a prospect. In other words, he's more like Nick Yorke than he is like Kristian Campbell, and Longenhagen has Yorke and Cespedes 13 and 15.

Edited to add:

- Kristian Campbell might be a dude. Making a lot of loud contact to all fields. Another speedy OF that can also drive the ball.
I also loved loved loved his Duran comp for Campbell, and actually just the entire premise of the Sox position player development: get athletic dudes with contact skills, and teach them to do whatever they can't do presently. Turn athletic NCAA second basemen into outfielders — why not?

Duran was a slap hitter in college, but his physique obviously suggested power potential. He cruised through A-ball, but on the back of a .421 BABIP; A-ball infielders could not get this dude out. It wasn't until his (series of) swing changes began to click at the 2019 instructs and then the 2020 Alternate Site that he showed he could hit the ball hard in the air and took off as a prospect. At first, his whiff rates spiked following the swing change and he couldn't handle the high fastball (2021--22) from pitchers good enough to located it above his barrel but close enough to the zone to get calls, but they finally found a setup (which debuted, if memory serves, at 2023 Spring Training) that allowed him to do both.

(The Sox hitting program gets a lot of guff on this site, but I think that's dead wrong: this was a magic trick.)

Campbell was even harder to strike out in college (17 K against 29 BB in the ACC!), and got to A ball and posted .400+ OBPs; like Duran's plus-plus speed, his plus-plus eye made him too advanced for the level (18 K and 10 BB in 84 PA). Still mostly singles, though. But then began the rocking horse of swing changes. They've traded some contact for power — and got a ton of power for a bit of contact. And now we're in the waiting period where we wait for his opponents to find a hole in his new swing. Basically, Campbell 2024 is what Duran 2020 should have been without the pandemic. We're stress testing the swing changes in competitive games, because there are competitive games being played!

The SP guys were talking about Cespedes' problematic defense on the last pod.

I think the added concern from Eric is that Yoely is just physically mature for his age so his hitting upside isn't actually that high.

I was commuting when I listened so probably distracted at moments, but my recollection was that they seemed much more optimistic that he could stick at 2B.

Nothing I wrote is intended at all as a snub at the SP guys, who rule.

I don't get where the Red Sox Player Development quote "Nazzan Zanetello continues to rake" is going as he's pretty much done nothing but not rake this year except for a handful of games. And the BA is very disappointing on top of seeing the above FG "Zanetello looks so far from being any sort of viable pro baseball player" quote. That said, I agree that he can play the age card at this stage and looking for some silver lining, a .700 level OPS is decent for someone just turned 19 yo at this level

I'm a little surprised Nazzan is still rising there (and at Yorke's expense no less).

For some reason they don't actually include their last ranking on their stuff. Nazzan actually dropped from 8 to 10 & Yorke jumped from 17 to 12.

I disagree with having Nazzan over Yorke, but they're moving them closer at least.

Notes
-As always, please keep in mind that just because a player moved a couple spots in either direction it does not necessarily mean we think more or less of that player at the time of that given update compared to last month. New prospects debut in the rankings, players graduate, other prospects make big jumps around that player. It's all relative. The player grade may not have changed. For example, we don’t think less of Yoeilin Cespedes even though he fell from 6 to 7.

Sox have six positional prospects with an ETA of 2025. Anthony, Mayer, Teel, Meidroth, Yorke, Lugo.

Although maybe only three that are regarded as immediate starters/co-starters.

Yes, this seems to be the confusion - even more so given Mike Andrew's recent posts which represent the new changes that strangely are not reflected in his list that appears to use rankings from 2 lists ago. So, e.g., Nazzan was most recently listed as 8 (13) but for some reason, SP’s new list uses the 13 rather than 8 as the prior ranking. Same for Yorke, who was previously listed as 17 (11) and is now listed as 12 (11). Seems like he should instead be now listed as 12 (17) as further confirmed by the Andrew's post (“Nick Yorke from 17 to 12”). I refreshed my screen several times in Chrome and then checked and refreshed in Edge and get the same strange results each time.

At any rate, cool to see the new rankings and new full reports for intriguing young guys like Ovis Portes.

That's just how they do it. I remember them talking about it at some point last year... like it shows the bigger picture of how they've progressed through the season, but I think it's more confusing than anything.

I try to do my lists monthly & before the SP list each month now, so if you're ever curious where they were in the SP rankings the previous month, my rankings post from a few days before is a good place to check it out.

Seeing a bunch of fantasy buzz on Jhostynxon Garcia, but he doesn’t seem to have his own thread here. How good is he looking?
