Who is going to tune in for the second round of the NBA draft?

The actual broadcast was abysmal last summer. Just picks and their families being asked inane questions on a way-too-low couch so their pants legs rode up to mid calf. There was zero analysis on the picks themselves, as the interviews were too precious to talk about what was going on with the actual draft.

I really hope that they offer an ESPN 2 option instead so the college basketball ignorati like myself can simply see a highlight reel.

Yeah, if I’m already watching, I could see keeping it on until my team picks in the second. But I’m not tuning in again a second day specifically to watch round 2.

Kind of speaks to the perceived quality of this incoming draft that it's almost February and we just started a thread on this today. This is the least buzzy draft I can remember.

When it comes to drafts these days, I am the worst kind of fan. I watch the first few picks, then tune back in when my team is on the clock in the first round and... that's about it. I just read about everything else the next day. I am sure there is an audience for the second round of the NBA draft, but I am not it.

I am hoping the Celtics trade 30 and 47 with Houston for 38 and 40 and a 2nd next year so I can just tune into the Celtics picks (38, 40, 41) and save some time.

Man I don't traffic on the Sox Forum much these days, but the torches & pitchforks seem to be out over there

Sam Kennedy is single-handedly destroying the Kennedy name in New England
There's a lot to be said here that would get me in trouble, but suffice to say that Sam would fit in just fine.

Personally, I got some sort of cheap masochistic thrill from watching Brad dump all his second rounders for even more future 2nd rounders this past year. I don't think that shit will hit the same if not done at 1 in the morning.

IF they're going to do 2 nights, they should at least start it at 10 PM so we can recrate that feeling.

NBA Draft Room has us taking, with the Mavs pick at 53…..Bronny James!

Big Papa wants another ring. Before you dismiss this, there is a long list of HOF legends who finished their careers in Boston. Walton, Wilkins, Maravich, Shaq, etc etc.

As fun as it would be, there is 0 chance that LeBron comes to Boston, even if the Cs went crazy and let Bronny start while burying JB on the bench to accommodate that. I think LeBron hates Boston (the city and the team) but would consider going to like the Knicks/Nets/Heat if Bronny was drafted there. If the C's (or really any team that Bron doesnt want) did draft him, Bronny would just refuse to sign until a trade was accommodated to a place of Bron's choosing, probably for something like a top 59-protected pick in 2099.

Then father and son can live their dream of playing together for...Real Madrid.

(Silver would 1000% step in. Not serious. The potential for trolling is still there, though.)

I think we could go through many if not all the teams in the league that have had several HOF legends end their career there. Also - Dominique played in 2 other cities and 2 other countries after Boston

The biggest issue is that the Celtics do not have the cap space to accommodate LeBron Sr except at a minimum contract. Don't really see LeBron walking way from his $51M option that easily. And a trade would be immensely difficult and would certainly require one of the team's starting 5 to be gone next season. Sacrificing a long term contract such as Brown's just to get a single season of LeBron and a player who is likely to wash out doesn't seem likely.

The team drafting Bronny will certainly be aware of the implications, and I don't see any such team doing it without some inkling of LeBron's willingness to join his son at some point. Anyway, it's fun to waste time otherwise spent at work to speculate here.

The Celtics don't need a ball-dominant player that can't defend.

I honestly wouldn't dismiss this. If Bronny gets drafted here, he'd have to seriously consider it. Problem is, what salary space do we have to give him a market-level deal for him? Would he play for the MLE(if they're even eligible for it)?

One year at the min to come off the bench in his final year before his Vegas franchise is ready. How bad does he want another ring and one year with his son? Def not discounting it.

He could join Rajon Rondo as the only other player to win titles in LA and Boston. That's good company.

(Clyde Lovellette one in Minneapolis and two with the C's).

I think Karaban has a chance to be a good pro. Has good size (6'8") and has deep range. I'm super curious about Edey in the NBA.

I think I'd rather take a gamble on someone with more upside. Unless I'm missing something, his ceiling is basically the Kornet minutes if everything breaks perfectly for him? Not that I've seen him a ton, but he strikes me as a slow dude that relies on his post-game. I'm struggling to think of many players in today's NBA that meet that description. I'm curious about him too, but I'd rather follow his development for another team and play the lottery with our pick. :)

In general I'd agree with you. But given our window, I'd think that Brad is prioritizing cheap options with deep rotation potential now, not ceiling. Developmental minutes will be hard to come by for a few years, but a new 8th man at the minimum would be pretty goddamn useful. Ymmv.

Does Portland really need a C that badly? Honestly I’d rather they use the pick as bait for more future second rounders. Or maybe look at a combo guard given that both their starters are on the wrong side of 30 and are either in or entering the load management phase of their careers. Like Ajay Mitchell or Devin Carter. I’d suggest Tyler Kolek, but I know I’d get razzed for my Marquette fandom.

I also like Dillon Jones as a Brissett backup. If they really want to go big, maybe UCLA’s Adem Bona? He’s got the physical tools to survive the NBA.

You may never get the chance to find out. How does he ever see an NBA floor?
He’s 7’4” with some skill. Can rim protect. Yes he has massive weaknesses that will severely limit his potential but I think there’s room for someone like Edey even in todays game.

But this is why I’m curious.

Boban is just a big doofus dude.

Zach Edey is going to be a 2x NCAA national player of the year.

They may have similar NBA careers when all is said and done, but no, they're not the same player at all.

I’d argue Boban is the better scorer at this level and maybe not even close….or was a couple years ago. Haven’t seen much of him since he became unplayable.

What's interesting to me is how different the college and NBA games are, and how much the NBA game has changed. If this was 20 years ago, Edey would be the unquestioned #1 pick and teams would be thrilled to have a chance at him. 7'4", skilled, utterly dominant in college (2x POY)...yeah, he'd easily be the #1 pick with expectations of a long and successful NBA career.

But now, we're talking about whether he can even make it in the league at all.

Its the craziest positional shift in any spot that I can see. Even the pure drop back QB is still playable under the right circumstances, but that is phasing out too, but think back to when Dwight Howard made himself a first-ballot HOFer, Drummond was dominant, Greg Monroe was a solid starter, DeMarcus Cousins was a sure fire max player, Thabeet the 2nd overall pick, etc etc….it wasn’t that long ago.

Edey will get his chance to play in the NBA--whether or not he can last will be kind of fascinating to see. I think his upside could be a less-problematic Enes Kanter/Freedom--someone who is a real liability on defense, but can score at a very efficient rate on offense and really punish mismatches. One thing that Edey has going for him is that he is a very, very good screen-setter, and that skill may translate a lot better to the NBA, with more primary ball-handlers who can take advantage of the screens, as well as playing against less zone defense.

2018 was the last BIG man gold rush in the Draft (other than the Wiseman gaff)
Ayton, Bagley, JJJ, Wendell Carter Jr, Mo Bamba all taken within the Top 7 picks (Luka/Trae Young snuck in)

Yeah, but all of those guys are big and can move plus had shooting projection. It's the big plodders in the post that have been completely phased out of big money/high draft picks. The last one that I can think of is Jahlil Okafor?

Okafor was a complete victim of when he was born. If he's 7 years older, he's made at least one All Star Team and hundreds of millions of dollras

Okafor's story is more complex than that. He had serious off-the-court issues that affected his play. The book Tanking to the Top, by Yaron Weitzman, includes some mind-boggling passages about the Sixers' overall dysfunction.

I mean, couldn't they just re-sign Taco if people are that eager to see a 7'4" victory cigar?
This is probably correct. But I watched highlights of Edey two years ago and then this year. He is quicker than Tacko. (Low bar.) On defense a number of times in the highlight reels he managed to follow an attacker to the basket and then block the shot. Tacko did not really do that. Edey is slow, but not as slow as Tacko and might be able to play defense in the NBA.

On offense, Edey clearly makes his points in close to the basket, mostly 1 to 5 feet away. He does not have a lot of lift/jumping but can do alley oops and put back dunks. What is new is he seems to have developed a hook shot from 8 to 12 feet.

He is also a much, much better passer than Tacko. Actually, a big part of his offense is to draw defenders by standing 12 to 15 away from the basket, then pass to a cutter. He is good at it...in the highlight films.

Finally, he is a LOT stronger than Tacko and Edey doesn't mind physical play, so he is a much more effective under the basket than Tacko ever was. Not many NBA players are going to push Edey out to the way. Oh, and Edey seemed to set pretty strong screens as well.

Edey will probably be, at best, a bench player in the NBA. But he has a better shot at making the NBA than Tacko I think.

The reality is that between Tillman and Queeta Boston has the deep bench center spot covered. Where they could use some extra deep bench bodies is at G and wing.

Yeah another Pritchard, Hauser, or poor man's 3&D wing should be the target with a low first/high second.

I've seen Donovan Clingan from UConn projected as a lottery pick. Not sure why he would be considered a better prospect than Edey. He's probably quicker, and slightly more athletic? But he doesn't have much range either, and is a lousy FT shooter.
