On the flip side...Zalatoris. Woof. Played 5 holes and missed birdie putts from 4 feet 6 inches, 4 feet 10 inches and 8 feet 4 inches.

I guess the good news is the ball striking appears to still be really good.

Spieth with an absurd hole that basically only happens to him. He flew the 7th green by a mile and the ball rattled around the gallery striking two fans and breaking a cell phone in the process. The ball came to rest on the curb of the cart path. He got relief which put him next to a boulder but juuuuust enough clearance to take a swing. The Trackman / Shotlink equipment was kind of in the way and apparently is immovable so he explored TIO, but those options weren't good so he decided to play it. After about a 10 minute process to get this all straightened out, he gassed the chip about 30 feet past the hole. Made the putt. Halves the hole.

Edit: Here it is. The tee shot was so bad he even hit a provisional

Jason Day is looking like a top 10 player in the world again. Currently 2-up on Morikawa in a winner-take-all match.

Elsewhere, Lowry is in the process of blowing a 5-up through 10 lead over Spieth. Spieth has won 11,12 and 13 to cut it to 2-up and just hit it to inside 5 feet on 14. Lowry did hit a good shot to 12 feet so a halve is possible but this match has really swung around.

Off topic but Rory’s clip and all the talk of equipment and rolling back distances got me thinking about Arnold Palmer driving the green on the 346 yard first hole final round of the 1960 US Open at Cherry Hills, where he started seven shots back. The only highlight I can find shows his tee shot, along with Hogan, Nicklaus, Boros (all of which I could watch all day), but 346 yards with a persimmon head on a 43 inch steel shaft and a balata ball Is amazing.

Got as good a final 4 as they could ask for. Scheffler/Burns and Rory/Cam Young or Kurt Kitayama (Young is 1 up through 17 at the moment).

Rory and Scottie with 1-up leads. Does anyone want to see a different final?

I love watching Cam Young, but yeah. Rory v. Scottie is the ideal title match.

I'm indifferent towards Burns, he is a heck of a player and seems like a good dude, but it does annoy me that he tucks his glove under his belt when he is putting as opposed to in his back pocked like everyone else.

Unreal. The drive on 18 ended up being the shot that killed Rory, due to the kick it got into a bad lie. Young won it with the third shot on the extra hole, but this was Rory's to win

edit: welp, we get Rory/Scottie ... just not how it looked at one point

Rory WDs from the RBC Heritage this week, which is a designated event. Not sure what's going on, if there is an injury or just some burnout and he wants rest. He also skipped Kapalua which was designated. I may be wrong but my understanding was that for this year the players were supposed to only get 1 hall pass for the designated events. The communication was lousy on this so I may well have missed something. I know going forward with the new structure there is no requirment for players to play so maybe that quietyly got changed.

I also wonder if we'll see a few more WD's. The schedule has been pretty heavy for the past two months. Genesis, Honda, API, Players, Valspar, Match Play, Valero, Masters, RBC Heritage. 5 of the last 8 weeks have featured a designated event, 6 of 9 including this week. That is a lot of high level golf in a short amount of time.

Spieth talked about how much golf he had been playing in his post round presser. He said that he needed to rethink his schedule leading up to the Masters going forward. They’re definitely all feeling out this new schedule.

Imagine how brutal it is to have to play golf in hopes of winning hundreds of thousands and maybe millions of dollars?

I really feel for these guys.

The schedule will be different next year with more even spacing between the designated events, and they have more options to skip designated events if they want to.

Was Cathay always thought of in this way? I don't remember hearing about this in previous seasons
