Law on Teel:
No. 14: Boston Red Sox take Kyle Teel, C, Virginia
Teel sliding this far is a shock, really — a college catcher who stays at the position, has a track record of hitting, is a good athlete, and played for an elite program in one of the two best conferences in the country doesn't go in the top 10? I'm shocked, but Red Sox fans should be ecstatic. He has some areas to work on, needing especially to improve his production against left-handed pitching, but he's a great athlete for a catcher and it shows up in his running, his movement behind the plate, and even in the bat speed from his quick wrists. He might not have the upside of some of the bats who went before him but I think he could still end up an All-Star at some point, and has a high floor because he can catch.

I don’t know anything about this draft class but getting someone at 14 who was consistently projected higher, AND fills something of a position of need (we all know how bad the Sox catching depth is) is pretty nice.

TBH, I didn't even really look into Teel that much as I didn't think he'd be on the board. Have to imagine he costs full slot, but can't complain given the luck of getting a better player at a shallow position internally.

Giants once again doing the two way thing.

EDIT: That kid is 18? I would've guessed mid 20s at a minimum.

Wow. I hadn't really spent much time looking into him or watching him, but reading about him now I've convinced it's a complete fucking steal after about 4 minutes.

Same as everyone else. I knew about Teel as he tortured ACC teams all season but didn’t expect him to drop out of the top-10. Great situation for Boston.

I didn’t think he’d fall out of the top 10. This is amazing especially given how horrible the catching depth is in the organization.
I feel like the organization's depth at catcher is good, but there is definitely a lack of high end catchers. A bunch of guys who could be MLBers someday, but I feel like this guy instantly blows them all out of the water, based off of the snippets I have read.

Not that they were definitely going to do the same thing they did the past two years (draft a low-slot riser and spend money later), but enthused they were able to pivot on a clear top-10 talent

With Teel and Mayer* both I’m glad they didn’t overthink it despite, I’m sure, doing more scouting of other players based on expectations of how the board would fall. I’m sure it can be easy to get a little narrow-minded as you fall in love with guys.

*Mayer was much more of a no-brainer, to be fair.

I live in Charlottesville, and I have no idea how this kid dropped to 14. He has been a legit college superstar, just a terrific hitter and a solid defensive catcher. Often seems to come up with big clutch hits. High baseball IQ. We're gonna love this guy.

Rays take Taylor, Jays take Nimmala. Hate seeing the division draft well

I watch next to zero college baseball but did stumble across Teel.

Exciting guy to get into the system with a non top 10 pick.

Curious if they go under slot in the 2nd. Teel should command the full slot amount.

Hate rehashing it but would have been really nice to have two 2nd round comp picks (and extra pool money) instead of 4ths right now.

I like Witt, also the other LSU pitcher Ty Floyd. I like Mitch Jebb from Michigan State. Not a ton of power but really like his bat.
