Green Bay is blowing it up and starting from the bottom. They know their roster is shit, their best receiver just left, their QB is gone, they've done nothing in free agency of note. That's their leverage. They don't care if they go 1-16 this season, they'll get their next QB in the 2024 Draft.Rogers has all the leverage here. He goaded GB into extending him for 3Y/$150M, most of which was bonus money.
If he retires, that bonus immediately accelerates on to the cap (remember Gronk?), costing them $60M on this year's cap, and they get nothing in return.
If he's traded to NYJ, that bonus immediately accelerates on to the cap, costing them $60M on this year's cap, and they get...something in return. That something is what's being haggled.
All it cost Rogers was whatever was left of his reputation. This is a full heel turn. He might as well have cracked Bart Starr over the head with a steel chair.
Agree with your overall point that Rodgers has the leverage but if Rodgers retires he's walking away from $59M.If he retires, that bonus immediately accelerates on to the cap (remember Gronk?), costing them $60M on this year's cap, and they get nothing in return
Second only to Kyrie in my mind.Same. They just aren't meeting my asking price. I don't know why exactly, but in a sportsworld full of clowns (and worse), this guy's schtick bothers me the most (non-criminal division).
Thanks, so the Packers are on the hook for $60 million next year whether he retires or goes to the Jets? Wouldn't that improve their negotiating position? There's no financial or cap incentive whether he retires or plays elsewhere, all they really get is whatever the Jets send as compensation. Feels like the Jets are on the hot seat now more than the Packers. The Packers can hold out for whatever they want.Rogers has all the leverage here. He goaded GB into extending him for 3Y/$150M, most of which was bonus money.

One of the differences between GB and NY beyond the obvious is that in GB he sort of "earned" the right to be an asshole by playing great and -- in the eyes of most -- overcoming McCarthy et al. And he was great first. He comes to NY as a confirmed asshole, but one who has done ZERO as a Jet.I think there’s a zero percent chance this doesn’t end in a dumpster fire.
Rodgers generally hates the media and has been surrounded by a team and community that has all but declared him a Demi god.
I think the ability is still there for him. He can still spin it. The Jets have a talented roster. But I think there’s going to be a big culture shock for him.
The McAfee show can be very entertaining. I don't watch it regularly, but I check into it every so often when it has guests I'm interested in listening to that are on.I've never watched this show before. McAfee seems quite classy.
He's also walking away from an opportunity to match Brady's feat, which will likely eat at him even more. He's already rich as Croesus.Agree with your overall point that Rodgers has the leverage but if Rodgers retires he's walking away from $59M.
He’s also a known asshole to guys that don’t run routes exactly the way he likes, which is exactly why he’s asked the Jets to go out and get “his guys.”One of the differences between GB and NY beyond the obvious is that in GB he sort of "earned" the right to be an asshole by playing great and -- in the eyes of most -- overcoming McCarthy et al. Right there with you. The last thing I want to listen to is someone else's opinion spun like it's a fact. Especially when most people aren't entertaining at all.I know folks love them, and there are allegedly some good ones out there, but watching this, I can't help but remain committed that podcasts are just a medium that will never entertain me.
I work a job that requires me to be at a desk most of the time. Podcasts are a great way to kill some time.I know folks love them, and there are allegedly some good ones out there, but watching this, I can't help but remain committed that podcasts are just a medium that will never entertain me.
I personally--and I think this is true of most podcast fans--just listen to them, so it's basically like radio on demand. Watching three dudes talking is odd.I know folks love them, and there are allegedly some good ones out there, but watching this, I can't help but remain committed that podcasts are just a medium that will never entertain me.
And his career has been in the NFC. He can only "blame" Brady for one loss in the playoffs.I'm not watching, if someone has a link, throw it up.
But if Aaron Rodgers thinks reporters have been mean to him, he best not fuck up in NY. That's a different media than the Wisconsin Gazette or whatever the newspaper in Racine is...
Aaron Rodgers has one 1 Super Bowl, a career playoff record of 11-10 and most of those 10 losses can be laid somewhere very close to his feet.
Fuck him, he'll never win anything again. The best thing he can do is shut his mouth, take his remaining 100mil, and then disappear from the collective conscience.
I think "podcasts" is a very broad category - I've listened to them since the time podcasts were actually on iPods, and I still don't enjoy even the supposedly good ones in the "host interviews guests" genre, like the McAfee showI know folks love them, and there are allegedly some good ones out there, but watching this, I can't help but remain committed that podcasts are just a medium that will never entertain me.
As an aside anyone know what is probably the world's oldest continuously running podcast?I think "podcasts" is a very broad category - I've listened to them since the time podcasts were actually on iPods, and I still don't enjoy even the supposedly good ones in the "host interviews guests" genre, like the McAfee show
You don't like Conan's podcast? Come on now.I think "podcasts" is a very broad category - I've listened to them since the time podcasts were actually on iPods, and I still don't enjoy even the supposedly good ones in the "host interviews guests" genre, like the McAfee show
Probably something similar to Curry but idk. Boston area has an angle with Simmons/Maron/Rogan. (Maron the least of the 3)As an aside anyone know what is probably the world's oldest continuously running podcast?
HINT: It's New England based.
There's some definitional questions--what makes a podcast a podcast-- but the Patriots in-house radio show "PFW in Progress" (now called Patriots Unfiltered) and was first made available as an on-demand radio show in 2000 and has been running consistently for 23 years now.Probably something similar to Curry but idk. Boston area has an angle with Simmons/Maron/Rogan. (Maron the least of the 3)
Nope, and that's despite actually loving Conan when he was on TV.You don't like Conan's podcast? Come on now.
He was asked if it was Jets, stay with Packers, or retire. He said there were other options and that there was a specific player on another team who he really, really wanted to play with. Was he essentially saying he wishes he had gone to Vegas instead? Or did he say he chose the Jets? I wasn't really clear on that.
That last one- I don't know.Nope, and that's despite actually loving Conan when he was on TV.
Back on topic, I'm enjoying thinking up potential headlines for a Rodgers-led Jets:
If he gets to play against Green Bay: MEET PACKING DISTRICT
If he plays against any former NFC Central rivals: HELLO DARKNESS, MY OLD FRIENDS
If he loses to the Steelers: JETS FUEL CAN'T MELT STEELER BEAMS
To be fair, they did say non-criminal division.I am hoping this becomes my all time favorite SoSH thread. Rodgers not making the playoffs or getting hurt would ruin it. Most hated only 2nd to Kyrie. That’s beautiful. Kyrie gets accused of wanting to eliminate Jews on SoSH and in a sports world full of legit felons,
That's gold.
Just wait until he changes his number to 16, then watch the board implode.Kyrie gets accused of wanting to eliminate Jews on SoSH and in a sports world full of legit felons, AR12 being an asshole puts him at second in the pantheon behind only a genocide guy. I love it. What is the best method to save a thread? Screen capping or is there something better?
He could also end up like a post-retirement Schilling too. I at least hope he doesn't have a collection of Nazi stuff. There's a widespread feeling that they were a good team being held back by historically awful QB play last year. If Rodgers goes there and wins something, he'll be a savior to a lot of NYC. Think of Schilling coming to the Sox in 2004.
Aaron Rodgers isn't worth getting indignant about, son. Even if he wins the Lombardi for the Jets, he'll still be a grandiose asshole.I am hoping this becomes my all time favorite SoSH thread. Rodgers not making the playoffs or getting hurt would ruin it. Most hated only 2nd to Kyrie. That’s beautiful. 2nd? really? I doubt it. I dont think we'd be threading Rodgers if he wasn't in the news, so to speak. and since he's in the news, and acting like an ass, here we are, analyzing.I am hoping this becomes my all time favorite SoSH thread. Rodgers not making the playoffs or getting hurt would ruin it. Most hated only 2nd to Kyrie. That’s beautiful. Absolutely agreed, which is why they'll want picks from NYJ to help with that rebuilding process. However, they will have Jordan Love, who seemed to do pretty well last year in relief and has his own financial future to consider (so has every reason to go balls-out even when rebuilding), so it's not a complete death knell for the franchise.Green Bay is blowing it up and starting from the bottom. They know their roster is shit, their best receiver just left, their QB is gone, they've done nothing in free agency of note. That's their leverage. His net worth is assumed to be $140M. I absolutely agree that walking away from that money would be gut-wrenching, but this is a guy who went in lived in the dark by himself for a few days. He's off in Special Brain land, where he's already amassed as much as he will ever need, and can do whatever he wants for the rest of his life. What he wants to do is not play for Green Bay any longer. Anything beyond that, we'll see.Agree with your overall point that Rodgers has the leverage but if Rodgers retires he's walking away from $59M.
There's a reason @LeoCarrillo 's tagline is "do his bits at your peril"Back on topic, I'm enjoying thinking up potential headlines for a Rodgers-led Jets:

I'm not even in the same county as a cap expert, but - if GB is going to be awful this year due to losing their QB, WR, etc (as noted above), wouldn't they rather have cap hits this season rather than next? If you're going to suck, shedding some salary this year to suck even more seems better than continuing to push dead cap hits into the future (when you'd like to not suck)Good explanation of Packers cap hit here: https://zonecoverage.com/2023/packers/how-does-an-aaron-rodgers-trade-impact-green-bays-cap/
It would be great for them if the trade happens after June 1 but AR is forcing the issue. Green Bay will have about $40mil in dead cap space until 2026 if this goes through before then.
That is good. I also liked this one.
Agree with this sentiment almost completely but love the Green Light podcast with Chris Long and friends. Mostly because they don't take themselves too seriously and are frequently (to me anyway) hilarious and self-deprecating. The opposite of what little I know about McAfee.I know folks love them, and there are allegedly some good ones out there, but watching this, I can't help but remain committed that podcasts are just a medium that will never entertain me.
It was said in the thread. Maybe not the general belief. This is not official yet so I don’t need to go full T.O.2nd? really? I doubt it.
Is Rodgers demanding that the Jets sign him, too?It was said in the thread. Maybe not the general belief. This is not official yet so I don’t need to go full T.O.
Having the room this year gives them the ability to use but doesn't mean they have to. Any amount under the cap gets carried to next season so spreading it out gives them more flexibility. Plus the cap goes up so taking up less space percentage wise.I'm not even in the same county as a cap expert, but - if GB is going to be awful this year due to losing their QB, WR, etc (as noted above), wouldn't they rather have cap hits this season rather than next? Any GB fans here? Will the Packers be able to get any mileage out of implicitly blaming Rodgers for financially hamstringing them for a year or two, or do the fans blame the team for "letting him go"?Having the room this year gives them the ability to use but doesn't mean they have to. I’m with you. This will be fun and I don’t really blame the Jets for trying. What are their alternatives? Can’t let Zach Wilson ruin another season so might as well try to catch lightning in a bottle here.I might be the only Patriots fan who is excited about this. I am genuinely curious to see how the Jets do in the scruffy Kyrie era.

I think we're all like that. The schaedenforce will be strong with this oneI’m with you. This will be fun and I don’t really blame the Jets for trying. What are their alternatives? Can’t let Zach Wilson ruin another season so might as well try to catch lightning in a bottle here.
