I would be surprised if that is the rule. A (not very) similar situation to this is an injury - when a rule 5 pick is injured, he can spend the entire season on the MLB DL, and that is enough to fulfill that 1 year of MLB service time obligation. A player never has to actually be on the active MLB roster to fulfill the rule 5 obligation.Browsing some tweets it seems like whenever he is reactivated he will have to spend a full season on the 26 man roster (or IL caused by major league play), or be returned to us.
Unless this has changed recently, I don’t think it’s correct, the player still has to spend a year on the active 26 man list once they’re healthy.I would be surprised if that is the rule. I guess I am unsure of the exact DL rule, but I remember Lenny DiNardo spent the vast majority of his rule 5 season on the DL, but he still fulfilled his rule 5 obligation. The Song situation is completely different of course, sounds like the tweet above from Matt Gelb is correct.Unless this has changed recently, I don’t think it’s correct, the player still has to spend a year on the active 26 man list once they’re healthy.
I think that loophole has been closed since DiNardo, I know the Orioles had someone a few years ago who was hurt and who had to be on the roster the following season.I guess I am unsure of the exact DL rule, but I remember Lenny DiNardo spent the vast majority of his rule 5 season on the DL, but he still fulfilled his rule 5 obligation. I had this initial reaction at first but I think it’s wrong. The last few guys on the 40-man (Ort and Hernandez, at least) are merely placeholders…they will be replaced in a few days as the Sox sign FA’s. Could they have chosen Ward over someone like Kelly? Yeah probably but I think a lot of those roster spots will be in jeopardy in the coming weeks. Took a risk, lost him, but still a fairly good chance they get these guys back (although if the Nats think enough of Ward’s upside, they can surely keep him on the roster. He’s probably better than Patrick Corbin).I have to say that I am pretty angry with Bloom and company about tendering Brasier a contract while not protecting Thaddeus Ward.
We might well get him back in Spring Training — it happens all the time — but he could absolutely make it through a season on the Nationals as a multi-inning reliever, and we'd have lost a decent SP prospect for the right to pay Brasier $2m in the wake of a negative-WAR season.
edit: Politi is fungible; we can replace him in minor league free agency; Song is a mystery wrapped inside an enigma; it's Ward that bothers me.
I can't cite any details either, but I'm certain this is correct. It's not possible to hide a Rule 5 player on the IL for the year. I don't think the rule is written regarding being on the major league club for a year, I seem to recall hearing it's a required minimum number of days on the active roster (I don't know the minimum, but I think it can be achieved over the course the year with a short IL trip). An extended period on the IL just delays it. I know I heard a discussion in the past few years in spring training that a certain Rule 5 player still couldn't be optioned for a month or two into the following season because of time he'd missed.I think that loophole has been closed since DiNardo, I know the Orioles had someone a few years ago who was hurt and who had to be on the roster the following season.

Let's not go there again. Either we will or we won't, but it's not likely to be decided until June or July at the earliest. What do we think the odds are that we get Song back?
Source:Nice we got Politi back. Good minors stats but didn't show this spring (6.23 ERA, 1.38 WHIP in 8.2 innings)
