The Niners’ alternative to trading the pick to the Bears wasn’t keeping it; it was trading the pick to someone else. Someone was taking a QB at #2. I don’t know if Trubisky was the consensus best QB prospect that year.

I don't think he was. He was considered a big project because he only started 1 year in college

How much money is Patrick Mahomes actually going to get in his next contract? He still has one more year left on his rookie deal, so they could theoretically let that ride. They will likely have to pay him a lot more if he gets to free agency, so clearly they don't want to let that happen. So let's say they extend him for 5 years this offseason. Right now the top 5 QB salaries are:

Russell Wilson: 35m
Ben Roethlisberger: 34m
Aaron Rodgers: 33.5m
Jared Goff: 33.5m
Carson Wentz: 32m

Mahomes is clearly better than any of these guys. Wilson is close I guess, but to me there's still a pretty big gap between Mahomes and Wilson. But...Mahomes will NOT be a free agent this offseason, so maybe he won't get as much as he could as a FA.

So what's a reasonable O/U on his extension in terms of dollars per year? 35 million? 37 million? 40 million?

Definitely. Kelce is a great receiver but he doesn't block. And he gets the advantage of playing with the fastest team in the NFL, so there's always space for him. Kittle is a monster.
