NFL rules are so arbitrary and inconsistently enforceable. It really is silly, trying to legislate a catch. It’s just not possible. At least with balls and strikes the fact that opinion is part of it is explicit. I enjoy rooting to the laundry but happy I don’t buy into the idea that there is some kind of objective truth as defined by the football rulebook. It’s just too crushing if you’re looking for consistency. If you care you almost have to enjoy it as an opera and await your chosen characters’ fate, just or unjust.
Both games today had referee experts in the booth saying definitively one thing that turned out to be called opposite on the field. Such a bad look when they aren't in sync.
somebody remind me...these are the wild card games in a league now hopelessly skewed to offense... ?
I think he’s the best. He sees and reports to the audience far more stuff that we can’t see with our limited view than Romo, or Aikman, or anybody else.
Oh, Tony Dungy told us this would happen with the catch rule. So at least he's got the high ground.
In all seriousness, it would be wise for coaching staffs to stress picking up any ball in such scenarios - sort of like running out a ground ball.
I think I've read just in this thread this weekend that every broadcaster sucks.
So on that play, first it was ruled incomplete, then deemed a catch and a fumble, but because no one recovered it, it's not a catch?
This league has done a tremendous job of turning a basic principle of the game (ie, catching the football) into a total clusterfuck.

At least we don't have Phil Simms anymore. At the end he was beyond horrendous.
Well, it was dumb to blow they whistle. You’d think they’d always err on the side of not blowing and then sort things out later.The refs got it right.

F’n lame. All all for not allowing players to launch themselves. I totally agree you shouldn’t lead with your head, but I’ll nevwr accept that DB’d aren’t allowed to stop a player from catching a ball.

That was the problem, the booth should have never reviewed it had they known the rule. Once the ref ruled incomplete and ended up with the ball there was nothing to review.
What am I missing? I’ve read this three times and I still don’t see anything about what happens if the ball is caught, fumbled and the not recovered because the whistle blew.The refs got it right.
