Rays did what they could there but if you want to win this time of year, you need the big hit. They had enough chances but couldn't get the timely hit.

That was a fantastic game. All time great playoff pitching performance from Cole and Rays still have very good chances to win it in the 8th and 9th.

Meadows was just the AL player of the month in September, he is it until they let Wander Franco loose.
Would love to see Wander up by end of next year. But these are the Rays so he’ll probably be up in 2033.

But keep in mind not too long after this NY drafted him in the first round out of high school and they couldn't keep him from going to UCLA, so I would say that is ancient, close to irrelevant history at this point. It will be the high bidder and whoever is the most desperate, I still think Angels but man it is going to cost. Cashman could have had him two years ago but PIT wanted a lot and he was then far from the dominant ace he has turned into under HOU and Verlander's guidance and only had two years left. It seemed like the right non-move at the time by Cashman but it might cost NY their season this year.

Since I mentioned it earlier, I can't find the article that said that HOU had one of the top few team defenses of the last 20 years, but here are a few about the historical greatness of their offense as well as overall, we are all well aware of how dominant their top two SPs are. Their 4th starter (Urquidy or Miley) and bullpen seem possibly vulnerable but good luck getting there.

Kiermaier is basically their JBJ.

in a key bases loaded spot, 2 out spot last year when the series was starting to get away from the Sox (Verlander had skated through a low-hit, high-walk outing to win an ugly game 1, then Price was blowing up again early in game 2), JBJ managed a 3 run double off of the the monster. It was a 2-1 count:

of course, he made game 3 much less stressful with the grand slam as well as a key 2-r HR in the next epic game.

all that to say, Kiermaier grounding weakly to first tonight on a hanging curve to end the game, there is your difference.

crazy grienke is their third starter. i know playoff baseball is a crapshoot, but i would be amazed if they dont win it all.

edit: i am sorry, i meant "crazy, grienke is their third starter." i meant to say that it is ridiculous that their staff has a cy young winner as their third starter. i woke up a little hungover, saw cole's amazing pitching line from last night's game, and made a poorly composed flippant comment in the gamethread. i love grienke, the story of him showing Alex Gordon a video of himself hitting a home run in order to help Gordon out a slump is one of my favorite baseball stories.

I know that was barely legible, but I think he meant “It is crazy that Greinke...” not that Greinke is crazy because he had anxiety issues.

I think Altuve knew he didn't have a handle on the ball and that't why he bailed on the throw to second.
