Dear Memphis,JJJ went 8-13 on threes.
He hates Wagner. MB3 with three big plays, after getting his shot stuffed - a sweet spin move in the left block and a floater, the hammer on the fast break on a dish from Fox, and a threeball from the top as a trailer.Bagley already poster'ed a dude. He's a baller.
Maybe someday soon people who didn't follow Duke this winter will stop the nonsense about MB3 not being able to shoot. He hates Wagner. This is common especially for teams playing in both the Utah and Las Vegas summer leagues. Jazz have 3 games in 4 days, get one day off then begins the 12-day Vegas trip with I believe 6 games. These rookies haven't stopped since the fall jumping from end of their collegiate season to training hard for the Combine.Grayson Allen is resting tonight versus the Grizzlies. Hmmmm.
Just making a Jevon Carter joke. He's probably guarding the 1 anyway. This is common especially for teams playing in both the Utah and Las Vegas summer leagues. Yeah but I don't buy the shot and he's being blocked CONSTANTLY because he only uses one hand.Bagley already poster'ed a dude. He's a baller.
That's a far more reasonable take than mine, lol. Still, for now I'm with London: JJJ over Young, Bagley or Ayton (jury's out on Doncic till I can watch him for 30 minutes in summer league and make a similarly ill-informed, knee-jerk judgment). I don't like the mechanics on Jackson's jumper even when it falls, but you can't teach 7'-5" wingspan, fluid athleticism, potential 1-5 defensive switchability, and 18 years old. It's Summer League. The teenagers are frequently going to look bad against the grown men fighting for a roster spot. I watched a majority of the Utah/Atlanta game and I actually liked a lot of what Young has done offensively. His shots are going to fall, but he moves the ball very well and as he gets more experience, I think he's going to be really good at running an NBA offense. He wasn't getting any space to shoot on offense and that was probably a major difference from college; defenses are better disciplined, longer and faster. When he plays in a real NBA game with other talent (so maybe not the Hawks) I think the spacing will be better.
JJJ had a monster first game but wasn't very good in the game today. It's still Summer League.
"I like a man who grins when he fights"LOL. Young and Allen go at it...
I see the potential with JJJ but didn't he have something like 8 fouls last night? I'm having a hard time seeing how he's going to play a ton of minutes unless he can stop fouling plus he needs to get a ton stronger.I don't like the mechanics on Jackson's jumper even when it falls, but you can't teach 7'-5" wingspan, fluid athleticism, potential 1-5 defensive switchability, and 18 years old.
Love the player. Now that he's a pro he can just embrace being the villain. Seriously, I think he's going to be a really good...obviously he can shoot, but also an excellent passer and a sneaky good defender.God Grayson is such a douche
Well people think white perimeter shooter from Duke and I think they associate that with Wojo, Hurley, Redick, Paulus, etc. I agree Grayson is just a “good athlete” and anyone who has paid attention knows that.So why is he a "sneaky good defender" or a "sneaky good athlete"? Because he's white? His combine results were impressive, so that he's a good athlete shouldn't be a surprise.
Whoa...simply meant that defense isn’t the first thing that comes to mind (I’m sure I’m not alone) when I think about Allen. So why is he a "sneaky good defender" or a "sneaky good athlete"? Because he's white? His combine results were impressive, so that he's a good athlete shouldn't be a surprise.
Somewhere Jon Scheyer is weeping over his omission in favor of the massive douche, ringless, and overrated Greg Paulus.Well people think white perimeter shooter from Duke and I think they associate that with Wojo, Hurley, Redick, Paulus, etc. I agree Grayson is just a “good athlete” and anyone who has paid attention knows that.
Do you think he's gritty? That would be the deal breaker to prove you're a r......Whoa...simply meant that defense isn’t the first thing that comes to mind (I’m sure I’m not alone) when I think about Allen.
Yeah I realized I omitted him almost immediately and thought about editing the post but... not worth itSomewhere Jon Scheyer is weeping over his omission in favor of the massive douche, ringless, and overrated Greg Paulus.
Until the combine, a lot of people (myself included) thought GA was a poor man’s Bobby Hield and would be exposed playing against guys more physically gifted than him who weren’t also 2-3 years younger. But once his measurables showed he belonged in the league athletically, I coveted him and very much wanted the C’s to trade up and draft him.So why is he a "sneaky good defender" or a "sneaky good athlete"? Because he's white? His combine results were impressive, so that he's a good athlete shouldn't be a surprise.
The only thing Young's hit all summerLOL. Young and Allen go at it...
Yeah, we haven’t had a lot of one-and-done guys like Young. Being 19 years old and not a transcendent athlete by NBA standards is a recipe for growing pains.Trae is going to be the worst player in the league this year, nonathletic rookie point guards are... not likely to do well early. I don't think he's going to keep shooting like ass but I'd wager he's going to be BAD. He can't finish at the rim, and he won't shake anyone. There will be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth over him, but his first year, esp as he is likely to be given the keys, will suuuuuck. I think you have to wait until at least year two to even have a clue what he could be.
My long term concern, and why I would have no interest him in the too 5 is he will never defend. I don't believe in drafting players who can have no chance to be at least average defensively that high. Preferably a two way potential stud.Yeah, we haven’t had a lot of one-and-done guys like Young. Being 19 years old and not a transcendent athlete by NBA standards is a recipe for growing pains.
But I get the impression that actual GMs likes Young a lot more than the talking heads covering mock drafts did. Once you get past the genetic freaks like Ayton, Bagley, and JJJ, rolling the dice on the guy who scored 27ppg as a freshman at Oklahoma makes more sense than rolling the dice on some guy with an impressive vertical leap.
We'll have to see how it turns out but I don't think passing on Doncic/JJJ for Young and what could be a mid-to-late lotto pick in a so-so draft will age well.Yeah, we haven’t had a lot of one-and-done guys like Young. It's already starting to smell given Young's performance in Utah. I predict it will look even worse once Doncic hits the floor in preseason. We'll have to see how it turns out but I don't think passing on Doncic/JJJ for Young and what could be a mid-to-late lotto pick in a so-so draft will age well.
I thought it was a horrible decision on draft night. JJJ May have some holes right now but he can shoot, he’s a great shot blocker, moves well on defense and when he learns to trust his foot movement and length and stop the reaching and lowering his arms he could be an elite defender. You can’t teach height and length which all 3 have. They also have a lot of skill.Yeah, we haven’t had a lot of one-and-done guys like Young. Big difference between liking Young at 5 and liking him enough to trade down from 3. The latter is a bet against JJJ and Doncic at least as much as it’s a bet on Young. We'll have to see how it turns out but I don't think passing on Doncic/JJJ for Young and what could be a mid-to-late lotto pick in a so-so draft will age well.
Yes, I get that and that's my point - betting against JJJ and Doncic will prove to be a bad decision, imo.Big difference between liking Young at 5 and liking him enough to trade down from 3. The latter is a bet against JJJ and Doncic at least as much as it’s a bet on Young.
Agree that defensive liability bigs are unplayable. Small guards are getting harder and harder to play as well. Steph and Kyrie are just on the borderline on D: they're long enough and quick enough to tread water. The closer you get to IT dimensions the more unplayable the guard gets. I think Young is incredibly risky in the switch-everything NBA because of the size issue. My long term concern, and why I would have no interest him in the too 5 is he will never defend. I don't believe in drafting players who can have no chance to be at least average defensively that high. Preferably a two way potential stud.
Meanwhile, ayton vast defensive question marks, Bagley more, Trae even more. JJJ has the foul question but clearly the potential. Doncic is likely average ish potential.
3 of the top 5 picks have huge defensive questions, two of them bigs and if the league has shown us anything in the last few years it's that defensive liability bigs aren't worth shit. It's theoretically possible to hide a guard, though I think increasingly hard, and if you have a rim protector that helps.
You can't hide a defensive liability big, esp at center.
