Wow. Didn't see that coming.D'Brickashaw Ferguson has retired per Rich Cimini. It saves $9 million in cap space.
How can they add anything but a draft pick at LT with the amount of cap space they have? They can't fit Thomas under the cap.Jets could also look to trade for a LT. Per excellent @Dan_Hatman, possible options are Joe Thomas, Ryan Clady, and Luke Joeckel.
Now Joe Thomas would obviously the best possible option. He was nearly traded to the Broncos last November (Thomas + 4th for 1st or 2nd rounder in 2016).
Thomas is on to the 6th year out of his 8 year contract signed back in 2011. Conveniently, his cap hit for 2016 is $9.5m. There are no dead money for cutting/trading him in 2017 & 2018, with a $10m cap hit.
I'd be pretty impressed if Jets can pull this off. With the clown show that Sashi & Company is running, getting Thomas for a 2nd rounder would be more than sensible.
The stumbling block, of course, is how much Fitz will cost (Jets have zero cap room right now).
Or they could fit a veteran and draft another QB, Connor Cook maybe. They're pretty fucked no matter what at this point. How can they add anything but a draft pick at LT with the amount of cap space they have? They can't fit Thomas under the cap.
The obvious "solution" is to trade Mo Wilkerson. His cap hit is $15.7m this year on a 1-year deal, with NO dead money. With Leonard Williams on board, they can do what was once unthinkable -- trade their best player away. How can they add anything but a draft pick at LT with the amount of cap space they have? He started every game for 10 years since he was drafted, 160 in a row, and amazingly only missed one snap in that whole time, which was on a trick play. 10,351 out of 10,352 snaps, incredible.

Ferguson played 10,351 of a possible 10,352 snaps since the #Jets picked him 4th overall in 2006.
Never even listed on an injury report per local radio. Think about that. It's preposterous standing alone and downright silly when viewed through the prism of the bullshit we went through last year.Ben Volin @BenVolin 5h5 hours ago

Can the Pats hire him as Strength and Conditioning Coach?Never even listed on an injury report per local radio. Think about that. It's preposterous standing alone and downright silly when viewed through the prism of the bullshit we went through last year.
The guy obviously knew how to take care of himself and is doing so now. Unless someone wants to argue luck or that 10,352 snaps over more than 160 games is not a sufficient statistical sample.

Denver has agreed to trade four-time Pro-Bowl OT Ryan Clady and a 7th-round pick to the Jets for a 5th-round pick, league sources told ESPN.
Maybe im missing something but that seems like an avenue the Broncos would have explored.
“@ProFootballTalk: New Ryan Clady deal: $6M, with $3M guaranteed for 2016. Jets have option for 2017 at $10M; it can escalate to $13M. Story coming at PFT.”The news I see (with no details) is that he restructured. I'll post a link if I see details reported

Indeed. If Clady is fully healthy (big if obviously), Jets have one more year to negotiate a new deal or groom/acquire the next replacement. For 2016, a former All-Pro replaces DBF and still leaves some room in the cap.Thanks. I can live with that
Dang. Wrong NY team.Chances of the Jets drafting Eli Apple and the Post / Daily News going with some kind of Big Apple headline??
Tells you all you need to know about Prisco in one sentence.Jets select: Christian Hackenberg, QB, Penn State
They had to take a quarterback and they get one of the most underrated in this draft. This is a great pick.
That's all fine and dandy, but according to Overthecap.com and Spotrac.com, Jets have no more than $3m+ in remaining cap space. They still need to clear $2m+ in cap space to afford the projected rookie pool. Their 2015 pool is expected to cost $5,369,607 (http://overthecap.com/draft/).Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer
Jets GM Mike Maccagnan on the QB situation: They still want to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick (where have we heard that before?), they're "excited" to see Geno Smith, they like Bryce Petty "quite a bit" and, "in a perfect world," they won't have to rush Christian Hackenberg into the lineup as a rookie.

You’ve got to win your division games. With Brady being suspended four games, I think it makes that division up for grabs. I believe in this team, and that we’re ready to make a run now.”
And Chris Price made the same point in his column on WEEI.com, again FWIW.Matt Chatham (@chatham58)

If ya think AFC East is "up for grabs" if Brady misses games (undecided), the rest of that thought must be it isn't if he plays. BAD message

Eric Decker should be applauded for showing some feistiness — it would be strange for a competitor to back down from a fight for the division title. And his quote surely played well with the fans in North Jersey. From this perspective, it was the language that seemed a little off. Decker seemed to suggest that “if” Brady was out, it could open the door for the rest of the division. What does that mean if Brady is able to play? Does that shut the door again?
